I found this photo in my local paper and had to share. Recognize these old coots?
You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred.

Hey hey, it's the.......MONKEES!!

Wow, crappy picture of them. Wonder why they chose that one?

We have something called Hippiefest coming to a local venue. I wouldn't mind seeing it since tow of the performers are Mark Farner and Rick Derringer. *Both* are very good guitarists. I saw Farner when he started touring solo in the late 80's at a church in Covington Kentucky and it was an incredible show.

I was excited to hear about Buffalo Springfield going on tour next year -until I realized they probably won't come to Phoenix.

Yeah, i saw the Monkees in '97 when Nesmith abandoned the tour [a VERY good show!] and then again in the early 2000'S which was no where near as good. After a less than enthusiastic 45 minute, or so long performance, they turned over the show to some young boy band singer wanna be's and disappeared offstage until they were done, coming back to close the show. I chose to sit this one out...from the looks of the performance videos i've seen on You Tube and the pic posted in this thread, They should title this one ''Hey, Hey We're The Monkees, Now Get Off Our Lawn'' Tour.

I saw "HippieFest" in 2007 and 2008 when it was being run by Flo & Eddie (Turtles) ... They are now running a "Happy Together" tour  and broke off from HippieFest a few years ago ...

It was great and every group did five or six tunes ... :D

At Hippie Fest 2007 ~

We migrated from front row seats at the side to front row seats in the center of the venue .. security came over and asked if we were alone or with a group and when we told them that we were alone, they allowed us to stay .. We were joined a few minutes later by a young woman named Jen, who had migrated from the lawn seating in the back.

Corky Laing was drumming and tossing drumsticks to women in the crowd, and tossed the first stick to me .. He would look at a woman, smile and flip her a drumstick and as if by magic, another drumstick would appear in his hand and he would repeat this over and over without missing a beat.

It was a fun evening with hippies everywhere, the smell of a successful concert with artists and fans all having a great time. Colin Blunstone of the Zombies, was just smiling and smiling as he sang, I fell in love with the Zombies all over again.

Hippie Fest 2008 ~

Once again, I donned my beads, sandals and tie dye and we were off ... Every venue had a slightly different line up .. ours was ...

A = Jack Bruce of "CREAM"
B = Eric Burden & "THE ANIMALS"
C = "THE TURTLES", Featuring Flo & Eddie
E = "BADFINGER", Featuring Joey Molland
H = Terry Sylvester, Formely of "THE HOLLIES

Some venues included Janis Ian and/or Melanie .. sadly, ours did not.

We knew that Jack Bruce has heart problems but you wouldn't know from the show that he put on .. Jack Bruce was fabulous and worth the price of admission alone.  This was the third time that we've seen (the 4th for the 'other' but who's counting?) Eric Burdon in the past 5 years and he was great, especially "Sky Pilot" .. Joey Molland looks and sounds likes he's twentysomething and not fiftysomething .. Flo & Eddie are better than ever and Terry Sylvester was in top form too.

**Note, we've been to Hippie Fests and many other concerts such as Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction .. the Hippies have the best smelling concerts ..  8)

Hippie Fest 2009 was held out of town and the line up wasn't exciting as we've already seen most of the groups. We would've gone if they had, Jack Bruce, Mountain or the Zombies again but we were lucky enough to catch the Zombies playing at The Mod Club that summer.

In 2010 .. Flo & Eddie stopped touring with Hippie Fest and went back to the "Happy Together" tour.

I saw Hippie Fest at the Molson Amphitheatre by the lake in 2007 and 2008. I really enjoyed myself despite the presence of all the dirty degenerate ageing hippies in the crowd.

Particularly good in 2007 were the Zombies with the laid back vocals of Colin Blumstone delightfully complementing the intensity of Rod Argent on keyboards. To hear them perform "She's Not There", "Tell Her No" and "Time of the Season" was a real treat. Mountain if anything played with more power than they did in the seventies. Unfortunately, they did not play "Paint It Black" that night. They do an absolutely chilling cover that I think is a more powerful than that of the Stones.

In 2008 I thought Jack Bruce did a great job replicating Cream classics. But he had of course been the voice of the Cream. I also really enjoyed the Animals. They were the most spectacular when one of the fellows picked up an electric violin for "When I Was Young" and "Sky Pilot".
