Title: Forrest J Ackerman
Post by: MoeTown on February 09, 2008, 03:01:47 PM
Hello, fellows! Great to find you here in this clubhouse of the coolest stuff on Earth! Joe Moe here. I have the distinct privilege of being best pal and caretaker of our 91-year-old Uncle Forry Ackerman. When we heard you had opened up "chop" here, we had to visit. But you aren't here to listen to me gab. Below you'll find a note directly from the Acerkmonster's mouth to your (pointy) ears:

"Hello fangs and fiends! Uncle Forry here. Joe Moe tells me you've assembled an army of monsters here in Cy-brrrrrr-space. Well, I've always been anti-war, but I am pro-mili-scary - so march, Frederic! Carry on. I hope I'll be seeing you all in Horrorwood sometime. I still intend on making it back to the Monster Bash convention in PA so I can see all my Beast-coast pals. I'll be lurking forry-ward to our next meeting!" - FJA

There you have it! Thanks for making this space for all of us likeminded creatures to congregate. It looks terrific. Meanwhile, I could personally use all the support I can get for a new movie I've co-written, produced and desigend: RED VELVET. Please check out the trailer and website and look for it in a theater near you around April! www.redvelvetmovie.com
Thanks!
Joe

Joe

It's great to hear from you and Forry. He is in my thoughts often. Having talked to him many times, visited him several times, out to eat a couple of times...well, Forry Ackerman is one of my childhood heroes, a figure stripped from a printed page that 'came alive' for me. Turned out to be a real guy! Going back to childhood, it was pictures of Forry and his wonderful things that inspired me to "collect" to begin with. In discovering and studying Famous Monster of Filmland magazine, I learned what was really cool in life...movies, masks, props, books, mad scientists, and women in provocative outfits!

It was funny, I was talking to Kevin Burns this morning and we weren't into the conversation 10-15 minutes before Forry's name came up. It's amazing just how much deep influence FJA and Famous Monsters has had on certain individuals...!

Again terrific to hear from you both and tell Forry hello...and come back!

Best,

Bob Morris

Hey, Joe!
Always a delight to hear from you, and to find you here in the Army Camp is truly a delight.  You know how I feel about Forry--my cuz Sara and friend Jill (vpdogjoe & ghoulchick) and I had the best time imaginable when you allowed us to take Forry into our gang at Bash a couple years ago--I was hoarse from singing away with him every mealtime!  Couldn't imagine having a better time of it with jolly Unka 4e.  Thanks for relaying his message to us here--

Your old "cuz Robert"--or as Maestro Forry has referred to me robertaylorobertaylorobertaylor ad inf.

Hello Joe and Uncle Forry! Great to see you appear here at UMA!

Joe, one of the highlights for me of Monster Bash 2006 was chatting with you around lunch time and later singing Jolson songs with 4E!

Whoa! What a reception! I'll show Forry all of your kind wishes tomorrow morning.

Forry IS doing really well. John Landis was here before the weekend and commented that Forry seemed more animated and talkative than he has in years. Y'know, Forry's never had any degenerative illness or the like, so as long as we look after him he should keep ticking for a looooong time. His most recent problems have been infection-related as he had a kidney stone blockage that gave him chronic trouble. Once that was removed he really bounced back. Unfortunately, he bounced a little too high and broke a hip. So, here we are. Comfortable in the Acker-mini-mansion. Receiving guests regularly and  keeping Forry busy, healthy and happy. He may have slowed down a bit, but his mind is as sharp as ever. It's nice to know that this warm and friendly place exists where I can visit and let you all know how our favorite Uncle is doing. And thank you for always accepting me as more than just "Igor" to our beloved mentor. I will take extra good care of the ol' man for all of us, my dear monster brothers and sisters.

Joe,

Of course, you can imagine our excitement when you bring us greetings from Forry.  He's like the Elvis of monster fandom, and we all go nuts for him.  We're also glad to have YOU among us and we appreciate all that you do for Forry.  Don't forget, with this group, being thought of as "Igor" isn't quite so bad.   ;-)

Hi Joe (and unca 4E)
We met briefly at the 2006 Monster Bash, and Uncle 4E was so kind enough to sign a book for me and explain the story of the "J" in FJA. Like to most of us Forrest J Ackerman has been a legend. But especially an influence to me in his courage to crack puns that would double over King Kong!  Please convey my most sincere thanks and wormy wishes to you both, and thank you Joe for the update.

Welcome Joe and Uncle Forry to the UMA! Wow! I can't believe I just typed those words! Uncle Forry in the UMA? How can I possibly claim the title of General when Uncle Forry is among us? I will gladly hand over my rank to Uncle Forry. There is no doubt about it, without Uncle Forry, there'd be no UMA! We are honored! Salute to the new General! Here are a couple Forry fotos I took in 2004.  Forry is making a scary face for me, posing between a couple foam-filled heads I got from his Ackermansion sale a few years previous to this.  I carted them along to the Bash in 2004 to decorate Forry's table in the VIP Room.

Joe, I'm so happy to hear that 4-E knows we're out here keeping this stuff going strong. And I'm sure I speak for everyone when I thank you for taking care of him and helping to keep him in touch with everyone.

Hey Joe, what's Forry's address if I wanted to send him something?

In 2004, I gave Forry one of those metal square-into-circle things (magic shop fare) like those he'd used in CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS--you're right as rain, Tom!  As soon as I handed it to him, he started "doing" it, and I took several shots, showing him manipulating the thingy in all its shapes.  He is a hoot.  That was the year my old camera was dying, and the pics are not good, but I wanted to post some of the 1000 Faces of Uncle Forry.  He is a great face maker!

Gosh, that reminds me of Peter Lorre.

Forry's address (which he posts at his "official website", too) is:

As Joe has often said, Forry LOVES getting mail and hearing from his fans.  Drop him a line!

Thanks for posting the Acker-mini-mansion address! And you can do more than just drop Forry a line. You're all welcome to drop your body by the place anytime you're in town. Forry still holds open houses regularly Sat. 11-Noon, but you're all welcome to stop by whenever you're in the neighborhood. Forry only gets out of the house occasionally nowadays, so he's happy to have guests at the spur of a moment. You can always call 323-MOON-FAN to make an appointment too.

My first post here in this wilderness known as the Universal Monster Army (which came to me heartily endorsed by my longtime pal and occasional creative cohort George “E-gor” Chastain) and of course the subject is Forry.  I’m very pleased to see that he has a thread of his own here and that he is surrounded by well-wishers, fans and friends.

Now politics aside, we have a Senator here in New York who is currently engaged in a campaign for President of the United States (you might have heard).  Back in the day she authored a tome called “It Takes a Village (to Raise a Child),” a singularly nonpartisan notion.  Some time ago I glommed onto (read: swiped) the gist of this and reworked into “It Takes a Forrest (to Raise a Fandom),” a very-much partisan notion which probably needs little defending here.

FJA has long since passed being just an iconic figure, these days I mostly see him as living-breathing Time Machine on two legs; you only need to ask him When or Where and listen closely.  You could find yourself standing in New York City in 1939, surrounded by the nucleus of fandom at the Worlds Fair.  Or you could find yourself in a recording studio in 1967, listening intently as no less than Boris Karloff records for posterity a brief history of film horror.  You could find yourself watching METROPLIS with Fritz Lang, or standing alongside Basil Rathbone as the cameras roll.  All you need to do is ask and 4e punches your ticket to board the Imagination Express (first stop the House of Pies!).  And off you go.

Forry is 91 now, a bit worn around the edges by nine decades of living on a not always hospitable planet, but at the heart of it still The Boy from Mars, with the same gleam in his eye that’s been there since that issue of AMAZING STORIES back in ‘26 called him out.

I for one look forward to seeing FJA achieve his oft-stated goal of becoming the “George Burns of Science Fiction,” just eight and one-half years hence (not as long as it seems, particularly for fans of a certain age).

The Imagination Express rolls on.  See you onboard…

You are most welcome, Paul! We're working hard to prepare Forry for Monster Bash this year. He really wants to go. I hope you and many friends here might be there. Forry just attended a signing with Rays - Harryhausen and Bradbury last week, so he is still driven to get out and visit with the fans. Forry has had injury and some infections in the past decade, but he has no degenerative problems. Every day I see him get a little stronger. As I've mentioned on other boards, he hasn't regained his sense of taste since his hip replacement. This often makes him a little depressed about going out of the house as his favorite social activity was eating at restaurants and flirting with waitresses. Any of you with experience in this taste bud phenomenon or advice, I'd love to hear it. Truth be told, Forry's taste has returned a small degree. So there's hope. Sorry, Forry's taste will never evolve to rule out painful puns...
Title: Re: Forrest J Ackerman
Post by: typhooforme on March 05, 2008, 04:29:30 PM
Joe, Forry's loss of taste, I think he referred to everything tasting "like chewing on a jellyfish", is surely troubling.  One of my good friends lost her sense of taste after a long round of antibiotics (that's what we blamed, anyhow) after gall bladder surgery, but it did eventually--after a protracted period of time--return.  We If you see a small return of Forry's sense of taste, I'm hopeful that this may signal a gradual recovery and fresh relish for The House of Pies.  As for the puns--well, I'm afraid (and delighted!) that, as the proverb says, "What can't be cured must be endured."  After 50 years of reading and hearing 4e's puns, I'll have to admit--they've GROAN on me.

Hello Ghouls and gals,

My 12 year old son and I are planning on attending MONSTER BASH this summer, mainly because Mr. Ackerman is scheduled to be there. Does anyone know what day he will be there? A look at the official schedule availed nothing.

We need to know before we book our flight and hotel room. Any information and tips about staying in Butler, PA is much appreciated!

Looking forward to your replies!

Josh, hello and welcome!  Good to have you here-- and wonderful to hear you are spreading the love and appreciation of monster fandom to your son!

If you are a Forry fan, you will enjoy scrolling back a bit through this thread to read some of the past posts on earlier pages, if you have not already had a chance to do that.  Forry's home address is here too, so you may want to drop him a note-- he love to receive mail!

Joe Moe, who has posted here under the handle of Moetown, is Forry's right-hand-guy, roommate and (to sort of twist on a Charlie Chan-ism) Number One Nephew to our Uncle Forry.  The news and updates that Joe shares here are straight from the Ackerminimansion.

Joe is juggling some exciting events at present, and probably has not had a chance to get back to update some more.  This would be how I've understood Joe's updates, with what we might expect this year:

Forry had some health challenges last year that prevented his being able to attend Monster Bash 2007.  One of these challenges was recovering from some surgery, necessitated after a fall, which created some issues with Forry moving around (and traveling).  Forry met all those challenges head-on, and this past November celebrated his 91st birthday, surrounded with friends.  Joe reports that Uncle Forry (ever the role model for being a hard worker and getting things done!) is working at strengthening this year with a goal of attending Monster Bash 2008.

We all sincerely hope that Forry will be with us, Bashing in Pennsylvania! However, the small steps in-between (Forry regaining strength, doctors giving the thumbs up, the demands of a cross-country flight and such), would make it hard to predict Forry's schedule at the Bash at this point.

Joe will surely be back to update some more, so this will be the place to check back-- but best guess would be if Forry attends, he will be there for the entire weekend, and there will be multiple opportunities for guests to meet Uncle 4E.

Regardless of the particulars of the schedule, Josh-- you and your son are going to have a wonderful time at Monster Bash!

Hotel rooms for this event are at a premium; the host hotel is booked solid as is the overflow hotel across the street.  I strongly urge you to make your reservations now, if you are planning to attend.   (Depending on how far you will be from the host hotel, you may find a rental car handy.)

Look forward to seeing you there! :)

Elizabeth,

Thanks so much for your reply. We've been looking forward to this for a long time, and what a treat to go and meet Hazel Court, Don Sullivan, and, especially, Mr. Ackerman.  I was stoked to hear that he is lately receiving guests at his mini-mansion in Hollyweird, and if the vedio on Youtube is any sign, ought to be a worthwile outing.

My son and I have never taken a long trip such as this, and needless to say are way excited. Someone suggested having a travel agent take care of all the details...may be the way to go?

Hey Josh! Glad to see your message here. Elizabeth, dear friend. Thanks for filling in for me while I was away. Yes, Forry insists on making the trip to PA this year. We are working hard to keep him healthy and strong for the trip. If and when he does make it to the MONSTER BASH, fans can expect to see him all three days. The Bash is the perfect venue for a Forry visit. It's so intimate and casual. If you miss Forry at the table, just let someone know and they'll arrange to get you together with him at lunch or dinner or at least tell you when he'll be signing next. On another note, fan Earl Roesel is visiting with us this week and Forry is telling him tales from the past. Some I've never heard! Forry's doing very well lately...

This is where Forry was doing a "dramatic recitation" of the ST. JAMES INFIRMARY BLUES!  "I went down to St. James Infirm'ry, and saw my sweetheart there--"  He was in his element!

Title: Ackermonster Reported Lose on Fangoria!
Post by: Elizabeth on April 30, 2008, 04:05:56 PM
There was an Akermonster sighting at the LA Fangoria convention!  :D

Uncle Forry made an appearance at the booth for the movie RED VELVET-- a movie in which Forry made a cameo appearance.

There are photos of a very spry and very happy-looking Forry posted at the Red Velvet web site in the convention section:

Click on the "photos" link next to the LA Fangoria listing.

I'm very sad to hear now that Forry won't be at Bash--his drs and therapist feel nervous about his ability to travel that distance.  How I had hoped to see my old friend in person again!  But Joe, you are coming--and you are going to set up a computer hook-up so we can talk to Forry and see him on the screen!  That will be great.  Put me on the list for a chat  with Ack-Ack!

Is Forry's web site gone forever?

If yes; What a pity!

I hope Joe or someone has some info on the subject...
I truly miss dropping by for a look now and then...

I read somewhere that the gent who is in charge of running Forry's website has recently been in the process of moving and has been overwhelmed with that at present--here's hoping he will get back to Forry's web page when he has the new digs all taken care of.

So then, Forry is going to be at the Bash. Come on, guys! Does Forry have to point out the future, to you, of what it means to "be somewhere"? ;)

lol  Mike, you're great!  Yep, thanks to superheterodyne  radio-telephonic-videographic technology, Mr Sci-Fi WILL be appearing at the Bash, teletransported in living color and hi-fi/sci-fi sound!  Bless him, he's on the cutting edge in 2008, just as he was in 1938!

I have never met Uncle Forry but I have been a fan for years.
When you see Forry in any role, Amazon Women on the Moon,Thriller, etc.it's like pointing out
someone from the neighborhood who has appeared in a film or on television.
For years I drooled over his collection of movie props and all sorts of wonderful memorabilia.
When he was forced to sell the bulk of his collection and move out of the Ackermansion,I,like
everyone else was saddened.
But Uncle Forry, like every kid,was resilient and bounced back.
No,I have never met Uncle Forry in person, but I am sure that I feel the same as anyone
who has met him.He is a kindred spirit.
