Title: THE SHADOW knows what lurks in the........
Post by: artistguy on March 29, 2009, 11:57:55 AM
Hi, I wanted to share a photo of  "The Shadow"  figure I finished this weekend. I always love working on these figures when it's a rainy wet weekend...:) He stands  21.5" in height (from base to top of hat), and took a little over 2 weeks complete.  Thanks for taking a look, and have a great weekend!

Fantastic work artistguy!!!  Besides the Classic Universal Monsters, I am a big SHADOW fan as well.  Excellent detail to the clothing and expression of the eyes.  Have you thought of doing a HEAD SCULPT in 1/6th scale?  This would be excellent for those of us less artistically inclined. For myself, I would then be able to kit bash a GI JOE into the SHADOW.  Anyway, wonderful work.  Peace.

Incredible!
What kind of clay or whatever did you use?  Who makes the clothes?

Hi Avenger, Chatty, Hammett, Wicked, and Chris... thank you for the kind words! I love the Shadow... he's always been one of my favorites.

Chatty, The clay is polymer clay, and I do all the clothes myself... pretty much self taught , and can do basic sewing machine work (very basic)..LOL!
Hammett, I'll let you know about a 1/6 scale head, but I'm not great at small faces...I like the head to be around 3" in height to life-size.
ChrisW, please direct your friend to my website, there is more info on The Shadow there...I'll also be posting more pics of him there shortly.
Wicked, He's mixed media made of  wire, wood, polymer clay, and full fabric costume.

I have a few more movie related figures to make, and then I'm hoping to revisit the Universal Monsters, for some nice detailed 18-21" display figures. I'll post pics as I finish each one...:)

Have a wonderful weekend!
Adam

Beautiful work. I love The Shadow. I'd love to have one in 8" scale.

Hi Adam, Thank you kindly for the note back.  I'd be willing to try my hand at a larger scale figure if you would do the head. It my start me on my way to learning to sculpt.  I have always been able to do figure parts, but heads have been a problem.  For some reason, the ones I have attempted seem to look like "MR POTATO HEAD".  Thanks again Adam and I would love to see more of your work.  Peace.

That figure is glorious.  I have most of the OTR episodes of the Shadow that still exist, all of the 1970's dc stuff, the Shadow Strikes comics DC did in the 90's (those rock, btw), and a nice sketch of the Shadow by Kaluta and the Bowen bust.  i likes me some Shadow too.  I have been thinking about a 1/6 scale custom myself, but the cloak and the guns are an issue.  Do you do custom work for others?  if so, what fees are involved? IE cloak, hat, guns, etc. ?

Thanks Anton for your kind words.. Here is another shot of THE SHADOW...:) I do do a lot of custom work, but don't work in the 1/6 scale... If I did I'd make you guys a 1/6 shadow...:)

Hammett... give sculpting a try... you can do it...:)

OldTimey... thanks .. I wish I could do the smaller scales, but my big paws get in the way...:)

Being a "Shadow" collector from years back, I gotta say this is absolutely the best figure I've ever seen...."Monstyers in Motion" were selling a small resin model a few years ago (I have one here someplace)..this this one wins hands down...

I wish I had your skills, my friend...

just do it for twenty years and you'll figure it out. :)

awesome figure, my friend. i'm guessing the challenging part was the guns?

i attempted a pepe le pew a few daze back out of sculpey. let's just say i'm glad sculpey is re-useable (at least until you bake it). i'd seen a pretty good tutorial (well, a lot of it anyway) on youtube of a woman making small baby figures, maybe four inches or so, out of sculpey which was amazing. i'd say if you mastered that, you're well on your way towards being a good sculpter.

anyway, if anyone is curious to know, i picked up some basic white sculpey at michael's crafts for $12.99 for a 1.75# box. a basic set of sculpting tools came in at $15.99 (someday i hope to figure out what they're all supposed to do), and a pasta roller was originally $24.99, but i used a coupon for that.

Thank you Jeff for your wonderful comments.. that was very kind of you!

Preyer.... glad to see your using those 40% off coupons.... try Super Sculpey, I find it to be better to sculpt with for finer detail than the white regular and it's the same price... well minus the 40%... keep sculpting!

that's a good thing to know. they didn't have any super sculpey, so i got the regular stuff instead which for me is good enough at the moment. i almost said 'at my level of skill,' but seeing as i *have* no level of skill just yet, i just amused myself.

at least i amuse someone, eh? :)

hammett1 (and to a lesser extent artistguy), i came across this while looking at a mego customizing site:

http://www.megomuseum.com/custom/headshrinking.shtml (http://www.megomuseum.com/custom/headshrinking.shtml)

basically it tells you how to shrink heads. :) of course you need to play around with mold-making a bit, but that's hardly something you can't learn. not sure if this stuff only works with vinyl heads, though, but i've always wondered how you went from a large sculpt of a figure down to the production size.

Hi preyer,  There is a current flowing in the cosmos.  I was on the MEGO site earlier today and discovered this HEAD SHRINKING HEAD ENLARGING tip.  Thanks for sharing because others might find it interesting also. Ah yes, great minds do think alike.  Peace.
