Title: Forry animatron (homebuilt) help...
Post by: mike c on January 06, 2009, 10:27:28 PM
I really had no idea which discussion group I should put this in. It's a bit of a tribute, fan art and a want ad in one.
At any rate, this is a prototype for the 'Uncle Forry' or perhaps 'Dr. Acula' animatron for my Halloween display this year. I make everything from scratch, except for the servos and the brass rods/threaded stock, etc. But the workings, design and all are mine.
The voice, of course, is Forry's, from an interview with the Geekson.com guys a few years ago. Just using it for testing.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v519/sclerismockrey/monsters/?action=view&current=MVI_0224.flv (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v519/sclerismockrey/monsters/?action=view&current=MVI_0224.flv)

Again, very early stages, but I'm asking if anyone has actual Halloween audio of Uncle Forry saying Happy Halloween or similar? Or can anyone direct me to good audio of him?

Don't wish to offend anyone, of course, (actually I think he'd enjoy it!) and I don't profit from my Halloween displays (I sell nothing, charge nothing, and spend a lot of dough every year just to have fun for everyone!)... I just really wanted to tribute Forrest for Halloween, and any audio file help anyone could give me would be gratefully accepted with a Halloween blessing upon your house for a generation.

Thanks for looking-

Mike C.

EDIT: will fix link in a sec... idiot me!

UN..........FREEEEEAKING........BELIEVABLE.

No WAY Forry would be offended by this, and neither would anyone who knows a thing about him. Mike, that's just tremendous. Wish I could help with the audio, but alas I cannot.

Really cool, Mike! I had to play it like 4 times! LOL

There's lots of interview clips of Forry on YouTube. Maybe you can find something there?

VERY creative and obviously a labor of love on your part... I believe Forry himself once joked about being stuffed and put on display some day, so the man HAD to have a wicked sense of humor. Not only about all things monster related, but also his own mortality. Wish i could help w/the audio you're looking for. WONDERFUL JOB, and keep us posted on your progress. That's gonna be one KILLER display come Halloween... CONGRATS!

On my second visit to his house, I remember hearing Forry say something (jokingly) about an animatronic version of himself taking over the Ackermansion tours when he was gone.  If he were here to see this, I think he would probably suggest that skull as his replacement, allowing him to retire.

I'm so gratified (and humbled) by your comments, guys, thanks a bunch!
I've really only been working on this for the last few days, and need to use more sturdy substructure to remove some of that shaking (it should be smoother); of course, when he's done, he'll have his hawaiian shirt, Dracula cape and ring, sitting in a comfy chair holding court, telling a few short monster stories, etc. I'll have Dr. Acula every year!
Mike Scott, I am now looking at Youtube stuff to grab some audio, thanks for the suggestion (feel kinda lame it didn't occur to me before you mentioned it, hah!).
Ray, a very kind remark, thanks much. I'd love to think he'd enjoy this, and your comment reassures me.
Again, if anyone has an official "Happy Halloween" from Uncle Forry on audio somewhere, let me know.
I'll keep everyone up to date as I really get the project going over the next few months.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind--the Old Gent would have LOVED this.  Heck, he IS loving it, wherever he is now--chuckling that unmistakable Forry chuckle.  Kudos to you for this loving tribute!

You could do a whole Disney-like "Hall of Monsters" thing, with various monsters spouting some movie dialog.

Thanks for catching that Dan, it's really nice to hear such things from people who saw him far more often than I did. I am trying to capture the feel of the man. As I get busy building the final figure, I want to improve the eyes, which are the truest indicators of emotion, and add moving eyelids, moving eyes, and a better eyebrow system. That way I can really capture some of Uncle Forry's mannerisms.

I've been pondering that for a long time, being the Halloween-year-round kinda guy I am... time, money and space are always the obstacles, right? BTW I read your comment to my wife and she growled 'Don't encourage him, please!'  ;D

What a tribute to Forry ! You say you've only been working on this a couple of days ?
Wow ! I have to see this when you get it completed. And I agree with Robert, wherever he is
Forry is getting such a great kick out of this and giving that Forry chuckle !
Great Job !!!

Forrest J Ackerman confirmed me as a friend on Facebook today.  It must have been this skull acting in his place.  In fact, I think this skull is ready to take on Ray Ferry.  It won't bother with lawsuits.  It will just start gnawing on him.

I actually found that rather touching, its really cool and really really Forry-ish.  I think it start with him itroduscing himself as being in "Horror-wood Karloff-fornia". I know that his bit on the Equinox DVD starts out that way and has good audio quality.

Make about 20 of them, give them metal vampire teeth and unleash them in Ferry's house.

An excellent and awe-inspiring tribute Mike, wish I could trick-or-treat at your house this year.  Your neighborhood's kids are in for a grander treat than any candy.  Uncle Forry definitely has the biggest grin on his face where ever he is now, a fitting tribute to his great legacy.

Thanks guys!
I've spent the evening making a slightly larger skull base for the final figure, to allow more room for a few more servo/linkage features... and I've been compiling more audio (Josh, I WILL be using the Horror-wood Karloffornia bit in there!) and more ideas keep coming. I'll definitely keep the group posted.

Dear brother, MIKE C.,
... "I've spent the evening making a slightly larger skull base for the final figure," That, should top, even, the excellence, of this first foray, into FORRY, of yours! Brilliant Work!
... One question: Since you've created a larger skull base... Can you return, mine, to me? Since loaning it, to you, for your initial effort, the wind whistles, through my ears, more, than, usual, my brain feels 'mushier', and, I can't find the part, in my hair, as easily, when combing my hair! I borrowed, for awhile, GENERAL TERRY'S skull, as a temporary replacement... howe'er, 'twas too rtight a fit! ;)

Thanks for the use of your skull, Baron... I've been trying to get it back to you all morning, but the moment I put 'First Class' on the box, the skull itself refuses to go in! A bizarre turn of events. Should I send it Scare Mail instead? BooPS? DeadEx?
Be assured, however, that I did replace the horns on your skull (obviously I had removed them temporarily for the project) and even gave a few coats of shocking pink glitter paint to the whole thing (when I first got it, good God, the cobwebs!!!). It'll fit the same as always, but you'll feel just peachy knowing you're so shimmery in there!
In the meantime, I suggest plenty of liquids of a certain octane to help with the mushy brain feeling; it won't feel nearly as mushy if the REST of you is feeling just as mushy!
It's nice to know that if I require more body parts I can count on you. (Stop snickering back there, General Terry!)
 ;)

Given that Ferry never had one to stand on, a single leg of any size would be sufficient to take him down.

Do you have a copy of Forry's "Music for Robots"? The whole first side is Uncle Forry talking about the history of Science Fiction robots - all in very clear audio. You may be able to extract something from it...

Dear Brother, MIKE,
... Yes, most insightful, of you: I am related, to HENRY DAVID THOROUGH!
... He spat, oft, into WALDEN POND! Recent technology, which, uses highly-sophisticated DNA tracing, proves, that, his spittle aided the evolution, of a commonly indigenous form, of pond scum, developing it, into the superior strain, of SCUM, which writes, to you, now!

.. As for the fact, that, I existed, many centuries, prior, to H.D. THOROUGH, should impose no serious obstacle... take it, on Faith, as a 'Mystery' .

He would stand up ,do a few wonderfully bad puns, and then each creation would get up for their bit.

Well, a new granddaughter (as of last Thursday) has of course been the big priority (I love my monsters but she's WAY cuter than any of that!) so other than late night scouring the boards online, I haven't had time to work on the final figure other than collecting audio.  I'll definitely keep everyone posted though, and I know I'll need suggestions and help in getting him as authentically Forry as possible (well, other than being a skeletal fantasy version!)...

When the Disney Imagineers built the first animatronic figure--Abe Lincoln in the Disneyland Hall of Presidents, he went nuts and smashed a chair he had risen from.

So be careful when you give False Forry  the rest of his body!

"False Forry" is surely the name FJA would choose for a robot version of himself, given his love of False Maria (the robotrix) from METROPOLIS!

(BTW, can you build a robot body for a *living* severed head?)

Ah, I Sing The Body Electric, one of my favorite Bradbury tales... and no, Chris, she is my second. The first is going to be 4 at the end of June. They're both 'step' granddaughters (I am 'only' 40!), my wife's grandkids, but I am the father figure in their lives and very much in love with them (some of you know the feeling)... it's great, wind 'em up and send them home with their folks, hahaha!
By the way Max, I am indeed trying to figure out how to fashion a body for you; this project is merely a kind of ramp up to it. I'll let you know when I've got it right.
You did want super strength and wings, right?

... If she "Splits", during, RON can use it, as a "LIVE EVENT", and, then, they can, all, hold a "Question & Answer" session, at the end, of it, to explain what it was like.

I'll work on it. Flaming fingers is a lifelong obsession for most animatronic designers (something the Disney guys will NEVER let on about) so the odds are good.
I did get flaming toes once but that was years ago, and a little tough-actin' Tinactin cleared it right up.

An update to this old thread... I have been working on the final Uncle Forry figure over the last few weeks, and have been posting my progress at the Skull & Pumpkin (see my signature)... but I remembered promising to show some updates here too, and thought this was a good, if brief, taste of how my little tribute to Forry is coming along.

Now I need an aloha shirt, a Drac ring, a cape, white slacks...  ;D
Actually, I need to add hair, trim his Brezhnev-like eyebrows, get some good Forry eyeglass frames, and get to work programming more Hallowe'enish audio for him.

Again, if anyone has him saying Happy Halloween or similar, do let me know.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

I have posted a longer test on my blog (see my signature, click and enjoy some Hallowe'en fun) today, if you want to see the full tale of Uncle Forry suddenly thinking of 'sci-fi'.

I say test because yes, I'm still working out stuff, and realistic programming takes quite a bit longer than the runs I've done so far. Linkages have to be adjusted, sometimes rebuilt, in order to get smooth movement, etc..

At any rate, I appreciate you letting me resurrect an old thread, letting me 'show off' in here, and much more than that, I know we all loved/continue to love Uncle Forry so much that it just feels right to express our tributes here at the UMA. I mean really... where BETTER than here?

Mike C.

EDIT: Speaking of those glasses... I am trying to find THOSE frames. Does anyone know where he got his glasses? I'm searching through the cheaper online places like Zenni Optical and even Walmart's online frames site, but so far I haven't found anything close enough. I humbly ask your assistance!

Great stuff, Mike.  I'd say ask Joe Moe.  He might be able to help.

I'll try to do that, TR, thank you. I considered it some time ago but thought it would just seem like a weird crazy fan question rather than a well-intended tribute. I was afraid the guy's got other things to do than field obscure personal questions about such a dear friend of his. But I will try him, thanks for the suggestion.

Updating the thread, here's how Uncle Forry's looking now:

I have some so-so video on my blog (hyperlink in my sig) but the programming is off and some servos are losing torque.

But I like this devilish, cartoonish look for him. Oh, the glasses are homemade foam stand-ins; I hope to find accurate real frames soon.

Nah Adam, this is just a personal project/tribute, although I'm not against the idea!
It's the most complicated head I've built, and it's taking WAY too long to get it to move the way I want it to move (tho' getting it to look the way I wanted was a cinch!).
You learn new stuff with every project... maybe my next will move better. It's just getting too late to niggle around with it much more; I've got to devote more attention to the dozen other projects I'm doing for my Hallowe'en display. But I won't even display him if I think it'll be a lame tribute... I'll put it off until some other time. I do NOT want a half-baked Forry tribute!  :D

I think he'd like it regardless, though!

Mike my friend, your work is, per usual, stunning. Forry would have chuckled his ass off if he'd seen this. Way to go. You honor the man with your animatron and what you do to keep the spirit of Hallowe'en alive. You're the best.

Thank you fellas, too kind, too kind!

If you'd like to see Uncle Forry's full 'routine' from Hallowe'en '09, in his aloha shirt, cape, Drac ring, etc., this post at The Skull & Pumpkin (my little Hallowe'en online 'pub') has two videos, a few pics, and a bit of an explanation:

http://theskullpumpkin.blogspot.com/2009/11/final-fling-for-forry.html (http://theskullpumpkin.blogspot.com/2009/11/final-fling-for-forry.html)

I intend to improve and strengthen him, and put him on display again this year. He was a big hit.

Nothing could've made me happier than to see adults recognize him... unless it was watching the little kids sit a his feet while he spoke to them.

Thanks for helping me tribute our beloved Uncle 4E, and for being so kind in your comments.

What a great group this is.

Mike, The Skele-Forry is surely a touching tribute to Our Uncle.  I'm glad he'll be doing what he loved to do so much--talking, entertaining, punning--for years to come!
