Title: What are your favourite Hawk Weird-Ohs model kits?
Post by: Hepcat on February 11, 2012, 02:10:08 PM
Vote for your five favourite Hawk Weird-Ohs kits! Or do you prefer the Hawk Frantics or Silly Surfers to the Weird-Ohs?

Here's a site with good pictures of all the figures:

Hawk model kits (http://www.ubhobbies.com/hawkmodels/)

And there are more pictures of build-ups and other stuff in this thread:

The Silly Surfers are showing surprising strength on this board as they're now battling Digger for the lead in this poll!

After a very strong start, Davey though has fallen off the pace and has been reduced to battling for the bronze.

I voted for Davey, Francis the Foul, Freddy Flameout, Sling Rave Curvette and Wade A. Minut. It's a real log jam at the top now though:

Silly Surfers 9
Digger 9
Daddy 8
Davey 8
Endsville Eddie 7

The Silly Surfers are doing very well in this poll relative to their Weird-Ohs cousins.

It's interesting though how images for "Cowabunga! Surf's Up" and "Gremmie out of Control" appear on the cover to the LP although they were never made into model kits, while the "Hot Dogger and Surf Bunny Riding Tandem" model kit didn't make it onto the cover.

Yes. Unlike Revell's sculpts for "Big Daddy" Roth's finks, the sculpts for the Hawk Weird-Ohs were sadly not really good reproductions of designer Bill Campbell's illustrations:

I have an affection for all of them. Mostly the nostalgia factor comes into play since I built them all, some multiple times, during my misspent youth. I built an original Sling Rave Curvette about 5 - 6 years ago. Hoooo-boy. That is one challenging little gal to try and build up and paint! Teeny pieces with little detail.

Yep, I went for Davey too. I had a Davey notebook. Come to think of it, I also had a Freddy Flameout notebook! Bill Campbell's art didn't have the fluidity of Roth's cadre of designers but it succeeded with a style all it's own. The model kits were kinda "stiff" looking. The Roth kits were masterpieces of sculpture (Mr. Gasser, Surfink, Batfink, etc.)

I always thought the very same thing! But then again..the great William Campbell drew most of the art but didn't sculpt the models I believe..... Buddy

That is correct. And the sculpts aren't nearly up to the quality of William Campbell's drawings.

Is that an original issue Frantic Banana from the sixties or this century's reissue? Or has the fit of the parts been a problem with both issues of this kit?

The quality of Marx and most MPC sculpts from the '50s and '60s amazes me when compared to many current expensive toys. These figures were originally cheap bin/rack toys, or included by the dozens in playsets. The larger Marx figures like the Universal Monsters and Nutty Mads were sold for 10-25 cents in bins and they still look better than many expensive toys being sold today. It's no wonder so many people love and collect the old Marx and MPC offerings.  :)

Of all the Weird-Ohs, Daddy and Huey have the most creative vehicle concepts, a coffin and an outhouse (things that don't normally zoom around on wheels), with Bill Campbell's coffin dragster beating both Tom Daniels' Drag-U-La and Aurora's Dracula's Dragster by a year or two. I may be wrong, but before Campbell's Daddy and Huey, the only "funny" model kit design that was a non-automotive object turned into a car was MPC's 1960 Stroker McGurk Tall T (a telephone booth hot rod, which the new MPC really should reissue, along with the Stroker McGurk Surf Rod - it would be so easy to convert the Stroker figures to monsters). Additionally, Daddy is the only Weird-Oh that's strongly satirical, taking on 1960s suburban living, cocktail culture, the rat race, drunk driving, and the highway death toll. (Bill Campbell used to - and still does! - draw social/political cartoons, even though he's in his 90s now.)

I believe you are. MPC wasn't around in 1960:

Quote from: Wikipedia
MPC was established in 1963 by George A. Toteff Jr. and Dick Branstner with facilities in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Toteff had been one of the original employees at AMT, eventually rising to vice president in the company.

MPC produced its first promotional models in 1965; the first product to appear under its own logo was a highly detailed 1/25-scale 1964 Corvette Sting Ray coupe featuring working front suspension, and including extra speed and customizing parts. Another of the company's first 'promos' was a 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 in both convertible and two-door hardtop versions.

Every return (and there were a lot) in a Google search for the Tall T kit listed it as "1960." So that must be the internet lazily repeating an error. Which makes sense, since the Surf Rod is usually listed as "1965," and I would think both McGurk kits came out around the same time - not five years apart.

I recall being surprised by the appearance of car model kits by this unknown new manufacturer MPC at my neighbourhood outlets, Ken's Variety and Tuckey Hardware, in late 1965. Prior to that AMT was completely dominant in car models. But because I was already in high school by the time MPC kits caught my eye, I've always regarded MPC as a johnny-come-lately company in the kit business.

So, with the Tall T established as a mid-60s kit, it looks like we can say Bill Campbell led the way when it came to turning non-automotive objects (coffin, outhouse, baby carriage) into cars for the model kit market. Or am I overlooking work done by someone else prior to 1962-63? (Though it was produced in '63, Campbell first conceived Daddy in '62.)

Given the interest in the space race back in the sixties, it's really tough to understand how Hawk could not have picked up on the opportunity. My guess is that an Astro series would have had a far broader market appeal than did their Silly Surfers. Witness that Scuz-Fink appears to easily be "Big Daddy" Roth's second most popular creation:

'Love seeing these old kits, many of which I haven't seen on a friend's shelf since the 70's.

'Didn't know they were part of a family with the surfers!    Great topic.

Does any one know which of the latest reissues include the decals?

I ran across this photo today of a period dragster that I'm pretty darn sure must have been the inspiration for Endsville Eddie.

That's not a dragster though. That's an Indy or a Formula 1 type car from the mid-sixties. Here's another:

This is a top fuel dragster from 1963:

The Digger kit would have been inspired by a dragster.

I must respectfully disagree. I got the photo from a vintage dragster site. They say there were more dragster types around in the early '60s than young people realize, and even many old people remember. One was the streamliner. It was a popular type, and the photo is an example of such. (I don't deny it resembles an Indy or Formula 1 car.) Digger's ride is a T-bucket dragster.

Anyhow, I've asked Mr. Campbell - on his Facebook page -  if this particular dragster was the basis for Endsville Eddie's ride. No answer from him yet, just a "like." (Might we have the start of a Weird-ohs controversy? Whee!)

I just found the history of this particular streamliner.

Interesting! Please keep us apprised of Mr. Campbell's response.

Here's a follow-up piece from the same source. No response from Mr. Campbell yet. (Don't worry. I'm not going to press a man in his 90s about something that was 50+ years ago.)

Okay. It seems that these were a very unique design for dragsters. Therefore I still think that Endsville Eddie's design was more likely to have been inspired by Indy cars.

There were a lot of totally unique designs around in the early days of drag racing. This one was getting publicity in August of 1962, which was about the time when Mr. Campbell was conceiving his Weird-Ohs. So there's that in favor of its possible influence. But your Indy argument has a lot of merit, in my view, and I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

There is, of course, the design's theme of braking. Similar to the never-produced Magenta Monster kit. So maybe it isn't so much a competition dragster as a speed record car.

I think this confirms that the Endsville Eddie car was based on a rear engined dragster. Campbell painted this box art in 1961 (two years before the Weird-Ohs) for The Slinger, a Hawk kit that the box states is "Patterned after an actual rear engined competition dragster," which was no doubt the Memphis-based "Damfino."

I had some of these models when they came out back in the early '60s.  I know I had a couple of Weird-Ohs and Silly Surfers.  Since I caught the modeling bug again about 10 years ago I've collected and built some of my collection of usually geeky models, monsters, scifi, real space, and now the entire set of Silly Surfers.  Here is the set which I just completed last month after starting them in January this year. Here's the Weird-Ohs Daddy I've just completed. It's my second attempt to make a Weird-Ohs kit look more like Bill Campbell's box art (the first was Huey's Hut Rod). There are many more photos in addition to these two, and I've submitted them all to the CultTVman site. I'll provide a link once they're posted there, but it will probably be a few months before that happens (Steve Iverson is a busy guy with a lot on his plate). In the meantime, two "On the Bench" articles detail the modifications made to the kit. ( http://culttvman.com/main/?s=%22Tom+Hering%22 (http://culttvman.com/main/?s=%22Tom+Hering%22) )

Mods to the figure include: completely re-sculpted head and face (forehead, eyes, nose, upper lip, teeth, lower lip); all-new fedora with a feather; plastic bristles for hair (glued on one at a time); restyled eyeglass frames; new bow tie; new suit lapels; buttons added to both sleeves; expanded briefcase; changed the angle of the body where it attaches to the car.

Mods to the car include: bigger, speed-deformed drag slicks with custom wheels; new exhaust pipes; high-mounted taillights (modified rear end); bigger fins; bigger steering wheel; new distributor and velocity stacks; engine wiring; clear plastic, martini hood ornament (dollhouse miniature); drilled lightening holes in frame rails; narrowed front end; added steering arm and tie rod; all four wheels mounted with a positive camber.

Plus a new base made from 1/8" ABS sheet; black diorama ground cover used for asphalt; new road signs cut from styrene sheet; a pair of clear acrylic mounting stands raise Daddy and his car above the base, and display him airborne (it's hard to tell from the photo, but the drag slicks are 1/4" above the asphalt).

I remember those from my childhood and had a couple of Silly Surfers and maybe the airplane Weird-Oh.   When I got back into the hobby 10+ years ago I picked up all the Silly Surfers and finished them up about 3 years ago, a fond reminiscing build.  Here is the group picture of all five.
