Thank God for a General Discussion board where one can go off topic in any direction. Here's one of those posts.
I was a 15 yr old boy back in the mid 70s. Rock bands like KISS, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Van Halen were bands that I grew up with. Like most folks, I always seize any opportunity to relive a little part of my childhood. Music is no exception. I was there for the fist KISS reunion tour in 95. I can't get into Queen with Paul Rodgers under any circumstances. A Led Zeppelin reunion would be more than appealing to me, but I'm afraid Robert Plant can't hit any of the high notes anymore. Still, I would go in a heart beat should they decide to go stateside with a tour.
My question for now is this - has anyone already seen the Van Halen tour with Diamond Dave? And if so, how was it? I am a huge fan of the Van Halen era with David Lee Roth, and I absolutely despise the Van Hagar crap.
Sometimes memories are better left unearthed. Can David Lee Roth still sing like he used to? I heard he can't do that famous falsetto scream that he's known for.
Anyone?
Well, Terry, I may be slightly prejudiced, but Dr. Nick...er...Dr. Bob has the pill to cure all ills. My suggestion would be, save $150 and go see 'The Best Underground Band In America'.
Go to a Reverend Horton Heat concert instead.

Meaning no disrespect to Rev. Heat, but to answer the General's question. They've played in LA and all the reviews have been great. The boys are all a bit older now, the hair is shorter and there's not as much leaping and screaming, but it has been said that they put on a great show and do everything they can to please their fans. The only thing really missing is Michael Anthony who has been replaced by Eddie's son, Wolfgang, who at a very young age seems to be holding his own with the old pros. Now, I haven't seen the show, but this is what I've read and heard.
I grew up listening to Van Halen, Kiss, Judas Priest etc...Other than KIss (Sans make-up) I never went to any concerts as a young lad. I've since seen all my favorite bands Reunion Tours. KISS was awesome..the real Kiss reunion, not the joke they do now with Ace and Peter imposters. Priest was probably the most fun i ever had at a concert, and most recently Oct in Philly..Van Halen!! They sounded and look amazing! Like KISS they sounded 100 times better than vintage bootleg shows I've seen.
Black Sabbath with DIO on the other hand was a snooze fest...
On a side note, I absolutely LOVE Rockabilly, but only the Vintage stuff. I'm just not a big fan of the overproduced stuff played by dudes in Hot Topic flaming bowling shirts.

I became a Kiss fan in 1974, when they released Hotter Than Hell. That was followed with Dressed to Kill. Then Kiss Alive came out and they started to catch on with more people, but there weren't any new songs. That was fine with me. I saw them on the Alive tour. They were playing a smaller venue, not a club, but a small auditorium. The opening act was Mott (Mott the Hoople, sans Ian Hunter). They were wearing cheaply made costumes, compared to what they sported later, but they were godlike. It was with huge anticipation that Destroyer was finally released. The cover was awesome, with the latest costume updates. The album though, left me kinda flat. A few songs were OK, but Beth? A ballad? Please!!!! And that was the hit! I really hoped this was just an abberation and they would get back to the basics with the next album. I went to see them again on the Destroyer tour, and this time they had moved to the 14,000 seat convention center. The show was huge! Stage rose from the ground, giant effects, great show (Beth notwithstanding). The next release, Rock N Roll Over, was unimpressive and by Love Gun I was done with Kiss. At least as far as anything else new from them was concerned. I got rid of Destroyer and Rock n Roll Over and limited my Kiss fandom to the first 3 studio albums and Kiss Alive. Everything after that was dismissed.
They did a reunion in 1996 and I went to see them. It was the first time back with the original lineup and it was cool. Fun show, but not like the old days... yet it was still Kiss. The problem was they had a lot of sucky songs in their set and that is what gets me about these old bands doing reunion tours. I don't want to hear them play their later bad songs before they broke up the first time, and half their shows are mucked up with them. Add the fact that they are old and so am I, and just not interested...

When they did the "Farewell Tour" they started playing stuff from Lick it Up etc....It was a cool novelty to hear them live in make-up considering it was supposed to be the "Farewell tour" and you might never hear them live again, but I agree if they had played them on the Reunion tour I would have been ticked. But just as bad is them playing the same set lists over and over. It would have been cool to hear some more obscure stuff like "Love Em Leave Em", "Flaming youth" etc...
The new songs they played during the Psycho Circus Tour were horrible, no wonder they didn't carry over...The 3-D was cool though.
You know whats strange, they wear the basic or "cheap" Alive Era outfits now. :P

Aaaaa this takes me back.... in my day a concert meant crashing through the gates to see Allman Bros or Grand Funk, and the whole time Mom and Dad thought I was at a school dance! Times really haven't changed that much...just think - If I hadn't been sooooo "cool" I could have bought so many monster toys when they were new!
Van Halen was the same way... I heard their cover of "You Really Got Me" on the radio when their first album came out and my jaw dropped to the floor. I went out and bought it and didn't stop listening for a month. They were coming to town, but as an opening act.

The bill was Van Halen, Montrose, and Journey. Van Halen went on first and was awesome. Montrose was OK. We left when Journey hit the stage.
Then I saw them at the Texxas Jam. They had become MUCH more popular, but still not nearly a headliner. This was the bill:

Sometime after that, they came back again on a double bill with Black Sabbath. That was about the last Sabbath tour with Ozzy and Van Halen went toe to toe with the heaviest band in history. They only had one album at that point and it seemed like they were ready to take the title from Sabbath.
OK, so now Van Halen II comes out. WTF??? Keyboards??? They were supposed to be the next Black Sabbath and we have Girls Girls Girls and ballads and what>?????!!!!
I went to see them the last time.
They were back for Texxas Jam II and were one of the top billed acts.

I LOVE pre Escape Journey!! Their early stuff was fantastic. When they still had the dude from Santana and were still a rock band.

Well, I saw Mark Farner when he played a church in Covington, Kentucky, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen! He absolutely *rocked* the place, and then took time to visit first with any of the youth who needed assistance in the area of drug abuse, alcoholism, etc. He said that when he was done with that he would come out and sign autographs. A real first class guy, who turned his life around.
He put out three Christian cd's: the first and third were great, the middle one was awful. Maybe you saw him when he was rehearsing *that* material! :)

I've said it a thousand times before, KISS and their fan club (the KISS Army) was the impetus for coming up with the name Universal Monster Army. Most fans know of Gene Simmon's love for classic horror films. He had published several fanzines back in the late 60s, and has said Lon Chaney's London After Midnight vampire was an influence with his on stage persona and make up. The guy's a huge fan of these films. He needs to get his rich ass in this army and start talkin' toys and monsters with the rest of us, and let KISS die off with some shred of dignity.

Bobby .. not with you on this one. Oh, I agree "Dance The Night Away" is hideous alright, but the rest of the album is still quite raw. Need I remind you of Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Dead Or Alive, Light Up the Sky, and Bottoms Up! ? Those songs rocked. In fact, I also loved the third LP Women And Children First. I drew the line with 1984. The Jump era was it for me. Hot For Teacher was cool, but I was done at this point. And then along came Van Haggar and I was done for life! Pathetic. Can't stand the red rocker at all.
Heck, where do you think Gene got that classic lower teeth snarl from?

The reason we thought it was funny was because of the particular lyric in the part they were rehearsing over and over, and what they meant by it vs the double entendre "Beavis and Butthead" interpretation of it. It was bad because they rehearsed part of the song for almost an hour, I don't know if they played the whole thing through. They were probably writing it, trying to work out some different parts.

Admittedly, they are an acquired taste, but I've been a fan since the early 70's.
Also, while they haven't ever had a huge fan following, they are often cited as influences by other musicians. I know Queen started at about the same time, but their sound changed quite a bit after hearing Sparks, and without Sparks, there might have never been Queen, quite as they turned out at least.

Hey Bob, Its Martini time ;D I love almost all rock. Hard Rock, Thrash, Soft Rock, Heavy Metal, Hair rock. Punk Rock 50's 60's Rock and of course Rockabilly. Terry and I have talked about our Rock days. There wasn't a band from 1977 to 1990 I hadn't seen. Well there were two. Paul Marctney and this one Kills Me, Queen. I have no idea how I missed them. The last time I saw Kiss was on there first Farewell tour ::)
With Uncle Ted. Stanley voice was still great and Ace's guitar playing was on as usual. The last show I saw was The Who. It was a great show. The one before that was Wolfmother and they were Amazing. The next show in line is Dick Dale. My Favorite Band of all time is Cheap Trick. To many shows of their's to talk about. I also met them. My claim to fame was Meeting and sitting next too Jimmy Page on a plane. Yes I snuck into first class when his wife went to the bathroom. I told him he was the greatest Guitarist and he was very nice. He signed a paper I gave him. I then went back to my seat. I was getting off the plane, when I felt a tug on my shirt. He said, thanks for your support Mate. What nice guy. Ahh to be in my youte again. ;D The rocking HHW

Well, the big Zeppelin reunion concert was today. Wonder how it went? I wonder if segments will show up on YouTube soon? I also wonder if Robert Plant can still hit any of the high notes? One thing is for certain, they gave no quarter.

I saw Commander Cody at a club in Seattle in the mid-90's. His Rhodes piano was messed up and they wheeled a baby grand in from the back. He said he hadn't played one of those in a while, but was warmed up on it by the 4th or 5th song and then started really getting into the show. They flat tore it up for almost 3 hours and rocked down the house. That club, by the way, had been going under different managements since the 60's, and before he went to San Francisco and broke out, Jimi Hendrix played there some.

Okay, you guys made me do this!!! Back in 1979 I saw Ted Nugent in Cincinnati, with AC/DC opening! Talk about an ear-bleeding experience! I snuck a camera in and snapped this photo of the Ted! The music was so loud it felt like someone was pounding on your chest from the inside! My friends who were sitting way in the back were stuffing cigarette filters in their ears. I did wear ear plugs, but removed them for the encore, because I wanted to experience the Nuge raw. My ears rang for days. Enjoy!

Ah! The Motor City Madman in his finest hour. Wonderful. I also attended a Nuge concert in the late 70s with his original line up, and it rocked big time! Unfortunately, I gave up on the Nuge right after Cat Scratch Fever. Couldn't stand Wango Tango. He's still is out there shooting things with guns and blowing out eardrums with his ES 335. I last saw him at one of the KISS reunion shows. He sounded good but was way too political (obnoxious) with his between song rhetoric.
