You may remember the Zacherley mask offered in Famous Monsters in the early 60's. I would LOVE to see one of these, but i don't think anyone ever has. What we have here is Don Post's way of salvaging that idea by combining it with another. The way Zach tells it is Post didn't want to pay him for permission to use his likeness, so they altered his sculpt to make it look a bit more Frankenstein-ish. The result was an interesting item that they didn't have to pay any royalties to Zach or Universal for. Unfortunately, it's made of the old school thin latex and is rotting away as i write this...hope you all enjoy the pics, I don't think Zachenstein is long for this world... The profiles look a bit like Ernest Thesiger, don't you think? {Or do i flatter myself?}

I've always kinda liked that later version of the mask, but I don't think I've ever seen a profile of it before. They really did get a great Zach profile on that...
I AGREE! Am i the only one who sees a hint of Dr. Pretorious in the profiles??

In the last photo I can see a definite likeness of Thesiger as Pretorious. Sort of that triumphant, smug expression he displayed just as he announced "THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN!!" Yeah, I definitely see it.
We are kindred spirits, Spangler! The last photo is the one where i see it the most, too! I love Pretorious..he's my ONLY WEAKNESS!
A Post classic :) !

Strangely enough, Gasport, Zacherley HIMSELF has always reminded me very much of Dr. Pretorius.
Something about his bearing and occasional waspish outbursts... perhaps especially in his ROLAND days,
when his personality seemed a bit darker.
Great mask! Thanks for posting about it.

My pleasure George,
I spoke with Zach today and he continues to sound better every time we talk. What an amazing rebound for a man about to hit 90! He was however, upset that he recently went out for a haircut and the barber apparently did a horrible job. I asked him was it too short or just a bad job..he said ,"BOTH!'' He couldn't find the words to explain it and stalled saying , "I look like a...like a ... so i interjected, "mental patient?" and he said YEAH! That's it!!! One more sign of his incredible rebound, his sense of humor is COMPLETELY intact...GREAT to hear from you,
Mike G
I recently got one of these masks off e-bay in unused condition. Love it!!
