Title: First Time You Were SCARED By A Movie
Post by: Unknown Primate on June 20, 2010, 10:03:29 PM
I know we've covered the movies that scared us the most, but do you remember the first movie that actually SCARED you?  I know KING KONG was the first movie I remember seeing, but it thrilled me, not frightened me.  Same with FRANKENSTEIN.  This might sound funny, but the first time I remember being freaked out by a film was when I first saw THE KILLER SHREWS!  I'm not positive, but I believe it was around 1962 or 64 and it was the first time I saw Sammy Terry, the Indiana Horror Host of Nightmare Theater.  In my young mind, those SHREWS were not really "dogs" in bad costumes, but truly. giant mutated rat creatures!  The thought of them attacking, killing and EATING that one black guy who climbed a tree trying to get away from them, terrified me!  For several years, that was the epitome of horror to me.  I was only 6-8 years old at the time and I definitely preferred KK, Franky, Wolf Man and the gang over those damn Killer Shrews!

LOL on the Killer Shrews.  That's a great story.

Personally, the first time I saw The Pit and the Pendulum (1961) on TV, I was scared to death.  I remember being home alone, about 12 years old, and freaked out by the very creepy Vincent Price.  I even had to leave the room at one point, when that pendulum was getting closer and closer...

It's funny, I'm 52 and I can remember that experience like it was yesterday.

When I saw "Bobby" from the Dead of Night trilogy.

I was in Kindergarten and I happened to catch it on Saturday afternoon on a black and white TV. I had nightmares for months after that.

I loved Dracula and Wolf Man, they never scared me, I loved seeing them, they were so cool. Frankenstein did scare me a a kid. I always thought he would come from my father's workshop downstairs and get me like in The Ghost of Frankenstein.

I remember ducking down to the empty cup and wrapper level when the local movie house ran scary previews. For some reason, the previews for SHE and ATRAGON (both 1965, when I was 10) really stuck in my mind. It was probably the volume levels used by the theater.

My mother likes to tell the story about me at six, watching the afternoon kid cartoon show (Kimbo the Clown?) and the TV station ran a Godzilla ad. She was in the kitchen and heard Godzilla roar and me scream. She ran into the living room and found me wedged between the sofa and the wall.  ::)

Probably the Banshee in Disney's Darby O'Gill & the Little People. I was in 3rd grade, at the drive in. A 20 ft. banshee coming off the screen made a believer out of me!

The first horror film that really effected me was 'Night Of The Living Dead.'  My mother had dropped off my friend and I to see a G rated feature at the local theatre. What she didn't know was that NOTLD was showing in an adjacent theatre, so we snuck into that movie instead of something like 'Old Yeller.'  I remember feeling totally terrified and totally disgusted at the film and with myself for having watched it. It really made me feel dirty. Goodbye childhood innocence. Hello George Romero.

For me, it was the Amityville Horror(1979). My Mother and I went to see the
movie, the first week it premiered.  As soon as I saw Jodie's eyes in the window, that
was it. I took off like a little B*#*H, and ascended up the theatre walkway. I didn't
return to the movie until, twenty or more  minutes later.  At the time and my age, that movie
WAS the quintessential Scary movie.

I'm still thinking about that movie "The Nanny". I should look it up, but I just remember feeling super creeped out when they showed the bathtub scene. I probably need to watch it again, as an adult. And of course  The Other, with those little boys. Yikes! Uta Hagen!

Speaking of THE NANNY, for years, just hearing Bette Davis' voice, conjured up frightening memories of HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE & of course, THE NANNY itself!

Bette Davis' horror vehicles were awesome!! LOVELOVELOVE "Baby Jane", "The Nanny" is a great little film, and "Hush" was a masterpiece of atmosphere.

I'm searching for an autograph of hers to hang next to our Joan Crawford letter.

I don't think I've ever been scared by any 'Monsters' in any movies-

Humans on the other hand.....
I'd guess the first were the village people who shot one of the mole men
in "Superman and the Mole Men"

There was another TV show episode, & I don't think it was "The Outer Limits: I Robot", where a nice robot was killed by ignorant townspeople~

I've never purchased any Village People products nor do I subscribe to their newsletter, heck I don't even do the YMCA arm motions, but........they were very comitted and serious about their art AND they seemed to be decent vocalists, so I sorta admire their act. Those costumes were unique to the boring times of the 70s/80s. Way better than uncostumed superstars!!! I still change the channel when their dorky songs come on    :)

They still seem to have it.

A couple of years ago, The Village People were the opening act for one of Cher's annual farewell concerts.  I was working at the Spokanistan Arena when they hit town.  The arena was a sellout including crappy seats up behind the stage.  The audience went wild for The Village People.  For me, the highlight of their set was YMCA.  They had a 13,000 plus audience on their feet doing the motions.  The dancing caused such air turbulence all the entryway curtains around the arena were billowing out to the music!

The sad thing is, the Village People were on the same record label as KISS,
on Casablanca records.  Now that's scary!!!

The first time I remember watching anything that scared me was as a wee lad watching the Outer Limits episode The Zanti Misfits with the alien ant creatures. When it was over I was terrified to go up the basement stairs sure that there would be one waiting for me.
The first movie was The Ghost and Mr. Chicken at age 5. When that organ started playing by it self I ducked for cover.

I can't remember precisley if it was the Harford Drive-in in Aberdeen, or the Drive in in Churchville, but the year was 1970, and I was scared to death by "Count Yorga, Vampire"

the first movie to scare me was in `68 at the Drive-In, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was playing.  The only other movie to ever scare me was THE EXORCIST a few years later.

This is easy! While attending a weekend matinee screening of the McHales Navy movie in the early 60's they ran the promo for Mario Bava's ''Black Sabbath" w/ Boris Karloff hosting and starring. I convinced my mom to take me and my best friend Doug when it finally came around. I will never forget our reaction when they first showed the dead lady in the bed's face! Both Doug and i hit the deck [we were about 7 years old] and hid behind the seats for the duration. Every time we peeked above the seat in front of us, we were greeted with a shot of the dead lady in pursuit of the woman who stole her ring! Scared the living CRAP out of us both and i loved every minute!!

THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE scared the stew out of me on the old CHILLER THEATRE show.  I was about 8.  One good thing, though....it started a life long affection for Henry Daniell and Paul Cavanaugh.

In NY/NJ I can remember in the late 80's when WPIX 11 was going to air The Exorcist for the 1st time. I was about 10.

I never saw it, but knew it was supposed to be the worst of the worst. I saw the commercials and that was enough!

They aired the damn commercials during the Yankee games so I saw it, and just the music and a few shots were enough to scare me senseless!

After that, I wasn't allowed to watch Nightmare On Elm St. yet...but it just came out on VHS and my friend across the street rented it. So I watched it (like a dumbass) and I was immediately scared.

Why? Because the basement where my mother made me take the laundry down to looked just like the boiler room in the film.

Needless to say, after the movie I came home to a hamper of clothes that had to be taken down to the basement--and I couldn't tell mom that I saw the movie.

So...it was a toss up, get chased by mom with a wooden spoon...or get chased by Freddy and his glove.

Easy choice, keep my mouth shut, pee my pants and face Mr. Krueger.

Adam Sandler movies creep me out.

Me too.........in one movie his character was born in the same city in which I was born. In another, his girlfriend has the same very unusual last name as I do. I don't know if the trend continues because I'm afraid to watch any more.
