Universal Monster Army

Since the early 90s, Hollywood has been updating and reviving the classic horror or monster films and bringing them to the modern audience of today. From the 90s thru to the present year, filmmakers are breathing new life into our classic monsters. That said, which of the following listed above is your favorite? Is it Dracula? Frankenstein? Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde? The Mummy? The Hunchback Of Notre Dame? The Phantom Of The Opera or The Wolfman?

Note: The Hunchback (1997), The Mummy (1999)  nor The Phantom Of The Opera (2004) are not neccasarily horror-themed films, but they do have elements of horror, IMO.

Every title on the list is worth a look, but I went w/BS's Dracula. It will never make my list of favorites, but it gets better w/each viewing.

Many listed it could be said are not remakes of the Universal Classics but rather re-tellings of the novels they were based on so....since Wolfman and Mummy are the only ones based on self-standing films/screenplays I'd have to choose The Wolfman!

I also would agree that each one of those is worth a look but don't go in expecting the originals....'specially in The Mummy's case.

I don't need a history lesson from you or what these films are based on, I know what they are. I probably know more about these films than you.

Whether it has anything to do with Universal or not is not the point, nothing to do with it, each of these films is a remake of sorts, I never said these were remakes of Universal.

HATED The Mummy re-makes. Just awful,formulaic dreck. Either Bram Stoker's "Dracula" or "The Wolfman", with Wolfie getting the slight nod simply because it's not burdened by the comical faux-British accent and wooden indian delivery of that talent vacuum Keanu Reeves.

I agree about the Mummy films and with Reeves, he wasn't really Coppola's first choice by the way, nor was Ryder. Coppola felt guilty that she was unable to star in The Godfather Part III, he was reluctant to cast her in the role of Mina/Elizabeta. He felt pressured in casting her, she was not his first choice, in fact a young unknown Kate Beckinsale was at the top of Coppola's list so rumors say.

I love Winona Ryder.........it's Keanu, the Anti-Thespian, who ruined the movie for me.

I was only stating my opinion not lecturing or giving a history lesson....and you may know more than me about them....Would you like an award for it?  Oh by the way did you know that your screen name comes from an EC comics character?

Just a note to moderator's I shall respond on that matter no further...I'm just having some fun!

Here's how I would rank them...

1. The Wolfman
2. Bram Stoker's Dracula (Keanu was the only not going right for this...IMHO!)
3. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
4. Mary Reilly
5. The Mummy
6. The Phantom of the Opera (just an excuse to film the Broadway version which I could go see on stage
   over and over but not watch at home over and over)
7. The Hunchback (placing last because I haven't seen it but I doubt it surpasses or does anything better
   than the 1923 or 1956
   version)

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein...but it lost the horror aspect in the retelling



Phatom of the Opera. i was a in a bad mood for it so I didnt see it in the proper light



Wolfman

IMO - Dracula has faired best of the bunch, remake-wise.

Wolfman, followed very closely by Bram Stoker's Dracula.  Then Frankenstein.  The Mummy movies were just terrible.  Haven't seen Hunchback or Phantom yet.

Yeah..........the Frankenstein remakes have been particularly uneven, as have the werewolf movies....... and the Mummy ones have frankly stunk (with much of the stench being provided by the steaming piles of excrement recently released).

I saw Mary Rielly and thought it was horrible, but I had just watched the BBC series Jeckyll a few days before so it is possible that I had it in my mind that it couldn't live up to that masterpiece. Also I think I was expecting much more out of John Malcovich. He wasn't quite the maniac I was hoping for. Although now that I think about it I didn't watch the last half hour.  Maybe the ending redeemed it and I just missed out.
