I had the advantage of growing up during some of the best classic TV. The Munsters and the Addams Family were on their original airing. Also Lost in Space and Star Trek were in their original release as well as Dark Shadows and Bewitched.
I really leaned toward the Munsters at that time due to the actual "monster" characters.
I now own both series, The Munsters and the Addams Family. Since I had not watched much of Addams Family when it originally aired I really sat down and gave it my full attention.
Now I feel qualified to state my preference and it must go to the Munsters.
The Munsters had the "real" monster characters and with guests like the Gillman and the Wolf Man who can top that.
Plots, the plots were both good and each had some "really" good ones while both had a few that were subpar.
I really liked the Munster house and the fact they often showed the outside. That appeared to be a real house. The Addam's Family house was mostly a painting. Only the inside were actual sets. Occasionally the outside front area was shown but the Munsters showed much more of the front and sides of the house and even the back from time to time.
The Munsters just reminded me much more of the Classic Universal monster movies where as the Addams family was just a weird set of excentric characters rather than being actual Vampires and other Monsters.
Don't get me wrong, I like both series and enjoy them both but my preference will always be Munsters.
The only exception is the Addams Family films. I thought both were very well done and loved them. In comparison to the TV series, the films had the real house and it was much spookier than in the show. The characters were also a bit more developed as spooky "almost" monsters.
I would love to hear others debate on the subject. Perhaps there is something I am missing that might help equalize the two series.
My last comment though is that I saw photos of the orignal Wednesday as an adult and OMG WOW! She is one heck of a hotty. She is gorgeous. I always thought she was an ok so so cute child but IYIYI. She grew up. What a fox. Ok, point made.
I liked the Addams Family more than I liked the Munsters, Herman got on my nerves....
Two things really got on my nerves about Gomez, first constantly doing Yoga, yuck, who wants to see a man doing yoga? Next, the constant cigar smoking. I watched him blow smoke in so many peoples faces and almost burned a few, I mean, we get it, you smoke cigars, you don't have to prove it every five seconds. The gag with him pulling out a lit cigar got very old after the first two episodes.
I like both series, but I was definitely a Munsters fan growing up. I think I liked the link to the Universal Monsters as well and I just thought it was funnier. Maybe Pat Priest had something to do with it too. :o
I love both, but would have to go with the Munsters. Herman and Grandpa was a great comedy team.
Morticia was Hot
Lily,not so much..
Herman was a big goof
Gomez was a short goof
Grandpa was cool
Grandma freaked me out
Eddie not that cool
Pugsley, meh
Marilyn,cute in a normal way
Wednesday, cute in a scary goth way
but, then ya have other characters in Addams family, like Uncle Fester,Lerch,Thing, cousin Itt......
as for the Munsters, ya got spot and.............................................................................
Munsters had a uncle I think named Gill and he was the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Thanks for that tidbit of info Zombiehorror.... Zombie Grin
I love both shows, and have the DVDs. Being a Frankenstein fan, I naturally love Herman. As far as Morticia Addams....let's just say I had lots of fantasies growing up....she is HOT. The conflicts with Herman and Grandpa were classic, but they could have killed off Eddie. I'd have to say overall I liked the Addams Family more.
I'm a Munsters fan, yet still like Addams Family. I think the writing was superior on The Munsters. The laughs came from the characters and the situations. They could actually play as funny even if they weren't knocking off the Universal monsters. It was more of a true sitcom.
The Addams Family had one basic plot point - provide weird and bizarre charcters, have them inside a weird and bizarre house and then have the humor come from the outside world's reaction. Think about it. The Addams Family had a neighbor come in, or bank robbers, school officials, police, etc. They'd all react with bug eyes and terrified expressions at the behavior of the Addams clan. That was the basic framework. The dialogue was never that funny, just strange. To me, an episode or two of The Addams Family is good enough at one sitting. It becomes very repetitive.
The Munsters were not so housebound. They put Herman, Grandpa and Lily in many different situations and then let the comedy come from the character. The lines were funny and not simply bizarre. The interaction between Herman and Grandpa stood alone and there was nothing that even came close with any character pairing on The Addams Family.
Don't get me wrong, there some jokes that fall dead flat in The Munsters. Still, I think they offer twice as many laughs as The Addams Family.
Love 'em both -- but the Munsters always struck me as a fun kids' show -- while there was something more sophisticated and adult happening with the Addams crew. Even as a kid, I liked that better.
Let me start by saying I like the Munsters.
Okay, now let me say I absolutely adore The Addams Family. Something about them..you never expected them to say some of the things they did or do some of the things they did. The Munsters weren't human, the viewer expected the quirky behavior whereas, though quirkiness was to be expected, it was more surprising with the Addams Family. They were human but strange. The films kept that bizarre quality (with the dialogue in particular). I loved Grandpa in the Munsters but he was really my only favorite. John Astin has made me laugh so many times in the Addams Family with his facial expressions and delivery. Carolyn was gorgeous, Jackie was a grinning idiot (perfect for Fester), and Ted Cassidy was a great Lurch. I didn't particularly care for the kids or grandmama until the movies. Christina Ricci practically stole the show in the movies though Raul, Angelica and Christopher managed to hold their own.
Morticia: "Let me do that. You're all thumbs."
[Gomez gazes at hands]
Gomez: "Wouldn't THAT be interesting..."
So bizarre, so funny. I definitely identified with the Addams clan more than the Munsters family.

Loved em both as a kid but probably prefered the Munsters. What came first the Munsters or the Addams?
They both aired from 1964 to 1966 which puts the shows about dead equal. The Munsters movies were made much earlier to capitalize on the shows success and fan following. The Addams Family films were more recent made as a revamp or reinvention. However, the Addams Family was based upon comics from Charles Addams and he was doing the comics in 1938. So it could be argued that the influence for the show came way before The Munsters, UNLESS you consider the inspiration for the Munsters to be the classic horror movies in which case 1931 saw both Frankenstein and Dracula with Bride of Frankenstein aka Lily in 1935. So there could be an argument for Munsters coming first. Doesn't really matter because both shows were aired at the same time and were both two season's long so are dead equal in those respects.
One thing that always bothered my about Morticia, as sexy though she was, whenever she asked if someone minded if she "Smoked", the smoke seemed to eminate from her bottom area and that is just downright unsettling. It appeared like a release of gas in the form of smoke. Not an attractive picture, especially since Carolyn Jones died at age 53 from colon cancer. Of course, no one knew anything about that when the show aired so it was probably a funny gag for then. I knew about how she died however before I began watching the series on DVD so seeing smoke emerge from her rectum area was in no way funny to me at all. Kind of tragic if you ask me.
Although Gomez had his funny moments I liked Raul Julia's interpretation of the role and especially his facial expressions during the one liners.
Just watch his face when he is told by Debbie "You are such a lady killer" and he says "Acquitted" (The film Addams Family Values)
The Munsters had Uncle Gilbert and yes they showed him as noted and they also showed Uncle Lester the werewolf and Mr. Gateman Herman's Boss the undertaker played by none other than John Carradine in a classic horror movie homage.
I agree too that the Munsters humor was taken outside the home in many episodes which also allowed for more antics in my opinion. What has been expressed as the more sophisticated humor of the Addams Family can also be compared to the more slapstick nature of the Munsters which as already stated and also in my opinion gives the Munsters twice the laughs.
I think it is safe to say though they most of us like both series even if we prefer one over the other.
What I think is truly a tragic shame is that both series were too short lived. If they had just run one to two more years think of how many more episodes we would have today. Gilligans Island ran three seasons and that extra year sure made a difference. Anyone notice about Gilligans Island how many episodes had reference to Vampires, zombies, voodoo and even a Dr. Jekyl Mr. Hyde type episode in a spooky castle on a different Island. There was also a whole episode devoted to Gilligan being a Vampire. They really liked monsters on that show too.
I don't remember thinking the smoke was coming from her bottom half. I know dvds I have, they always have her framed from the waist up (more than likely to hide the smoke machine from the camera) but I never thought anything bad about it. Just that it was engulfing her like fog.
I had no idea both shows were only two series long. That is indeed tragic! I remember watching 'V' when I was very young and that was axed suddenly. I've never seen an episode of Gilligan's Island so I'll have to look it up. One of my all-time favourite comedies is 'The Young Ones' and that only ran for two series, I've seen every episode countless times. I can see now why the Addams Family movies caused such excitement, they where both great films in my opinion, and brilliantly cast - how did they think to cast Christopher Loyd as Fester?
Herman was my favourite character as a kid and I love Fred gwynne, I'd like to know what other roles he played. He was great in Pet Semetary and had a small part as the judge in My Cousin Vinnie. I'm in the Munsters mood now!
I do recommend the Gilligans Island DVD set. It has all three seasons and is a great value. I really enjoyed watching them all and did not tire of them even though I often watched four to five a day. I had forgotten how many "monster" themed episodes they had made.
DURING THE DAY I LIVE WITH THE ADDAMS FAMILY......AT NIGHT I GO HOME TO THE MUNSTERS...
JUST THINK HOW COOL IT WOULD BE TO WATCH CREATURE FEATURES WITH THE MUNSTERS EATING FATHER AND SON PIZZA ON A SATURDAY NIGHT........PRICELESS.......ICEMAN..........
Loved 'em both but I think I related a bit more to the Addams Family~ ;)

WOW, wow, wow nice picture btw!!!!!!!!
But, The MUNSTERS always were the first family for me. >:D
Love 'em both, but I like the Munsters more because they're more monster-like. Plus, as a kid I understood the Munsters humor more than the Addams Family humor.
The production values alone make me love The Munsters more.
One thing about the The Addams Family program that really turned me off was how the exact same clips of gags were used over and over again.
You know Gillman-fan you really notice that a lot more when you watch episodes back to back and often three or four in one day as I do here in Kuwait. Sheesh, sometimes they use not only the same gag but the same clip from an earlier episode. I guess that would be ok if they only aired one episode a week. A person might not notice it as much.
I love the Munsters and it is my favorite all time tv show. I never cared for the Adams Family in the 60's but when seen it in re-runs on tv land a year or so ago I actually liked it and found it amusing!
Munsters all the way. both are great shows however.
Addams Family seemed to be on TV more in my area, but I enjoyed the weirdness of them, moreso than the Munsters.
Gomez was a riot and Morticia was FINE...Fester, Lurch, Thing, It...I agree Ricci brought Wednesday to life in the movies. All great charcters.
I too grew up when these great shows first aired. I enjoy them both, but The Addams Family always seemed more clever & original.

Great look Dollface. I'm thinking on a separate thread, we should post photos of ourselves, if they exist, costumed as our best favorite Monster/ Horror Character.
OG
I like them both equally however if I had too pick one, The Munsters all the way!!!
Not a bad idea Opera Ghost except that so many members use the quote button to comment on a photo and we end up with pages and pages of the same photos over and over again. If folks would "not" do that then it could be fun to have a photo section or perhaps a photo page for each member so we could click on the member and see all their costumes sort of like the dreaded face book.
I choose, The MUNSTERS! Herman, Lily and the whole gang rule!!!! >:D
While I like to look of the Munsters I prefer the Addams Family. I never found the Munsters to be that funny or interesting. I would have liekd to see a comedy with the Universal Monsters as themselves.
Who watched the New Addams Family series on FoxFamily? I enjoyed it especially the episode with John Astin as Grandpa Addams.
I would have to go with The Addams Family. I love that show! I have tried to watch the Munsters but there is just something about it that puts me off. Meh.
I've loved both of these shows for so long now, I really can't choose between them. It's like "Sophie's Choice"!
Ihave both series on DVD, but growing up I was a much bigger Munsters fan because of the whole Universal Monsters thing. But as I got older, I've liked the Adams family more, so even though the Munsters will always be #1, the Adams Family is now a very close second. Anyone remember the Adams Family Holloween movie that was in color? I would have to say it came out in the early 80's, but I may be wrong because that's around when I remember seeing it. As for the Munster movies, the first one was good, but the other one, with the wax museum, was pretty craptacular, while I really enjoy both Adams family movies.
I have both series as well. When watching them, many episodes at a time in each sitting I noticed that The Addams Family uses much more stock footage and repeat gags than the Munsters did. Although the Munsters had similar themes to some of their scenarios I did not see near as many repeat film clips and that includes some of the minor bits with the raven or spot.
I never saw the Addams Family color movie from the 80's but loved the two films with Raul Julia and Angelica Huston. I never tire of watching those. I have often imagined what a really good, high production value of a modern Munsters film would be like. I have zero clue though who could even pull off playing the roles. In the Addams Family films, they chose the right actors for every part. I really don't see how they could have improved on the excellent job they did. The Munsters however, would be one of the most difficult challenges because it would be "near" impossible to improve or even equal the original stars. Also, I believe that they could not make that in color. When I watch the pilot episode in color I just cringe. One of the apsects that made the Munsters so wonderful was its black and white Universal Monsters look to every episode. They also paid homage so many times and in so many ways to our beloved monsters. There are scenes in the show, often opening sequences where you believe for a minute you are watching and old Universal horror film.
In the end, I have always prefered the Munsters, even though I enjoy and appreciate the Addams Family, since I am a big Universal monster fan I always chose Munsters. They just should have had more episodes with Cousin Gilbert and Grandpa's son the werewolf.
I love the Munsters tv show and the Addams Family movies.
Munsters=good
Addams Family=great
Addams Family is a wonderfully twisted show based on wonderfully twisted cartoons by Charles Addams. I loved it when I was 5, and I love it now.
My biggest problems with the Munsters (if I had to pinpoint problems) was... Lily's constant repetition of "The last time..." jokes, and Pat Priest's stiffness and lack of anything interesting to say, other than replies to the other actors ('Yes, Aunt Lily', 'Yes, Uncle Herman', etc.)
As far as Addams, Pugsley's acting always left a bit to be desired, I thought.
The Munsters blow them out of the water completely! I could never get into the Addams Family at all

I liked the New Addams family series. Certainly a great deal better a revival then "Munsters Today". I'll take the Addams family over the Munsters, although I have a fondness for "The Munsters."
Both shows did have some running gags. I often find "dated" shows from the past to be not as entertaining today but although I favor the Munsters I think both are still very entertaining today.
I really can't believe though they only ran two seasons each while Lost in Space got three. I think both these shows should have gotten at least another year and I would have hoped for even more.

I would like the "new" series on DVD. While no where near the classic the original was, it was still twice as entertaining as most else that is on. I thought it an odd choice that they chose to "remake" the old series episodes, though.
I had trouble picking a favorite for a while, until one day my wife and I were talking about it and she made a pretty solid observation concerning the two. Based on this observation I think I prefer the Addams Family. The observation being thus: The Addams Family fully embrace their "weirdness" and find "normal" people's actions to be bizarre. Where The Addams Family have a kind of disdain for the "atomic family," The Munsters try to maintain a cookie-cutter atomic family dynamic and appearance, and seem like they would be horrified to discover their actual "weirdness." They're both great shows that I love, but those underlying themes are the distinguishing factor that show the intrinsic difference to me.

Hey Monster Bob, I hope you can see this. I too have eye trouble, especially getting older but since I use the black background or the default background of the UMA I use the colors because they show up very bright and I can read them better. I have observed though that only certain colors show up bright like the orange, lime green, beige and white. Those come out really bright on the black background.
Have you tried experimenting with the other colors and backgrounds to see if it works better for you? Just wondering because for me at least, I like the black background with the bright colors, I can see them well and they often give it a Halloween feel.
I am sorry though if it makes it difficult to read using your background. I completely understand the eye situation. As my eyesight worsens and I am supposed to be using reading glasses I refuse to do it because I keep trying to make my eyes work for it as a form of exercise. I was prescribed reading glasses four years ago but I am still not wearing them unless I am studying for a test in which case I have no choice. I am happy that I can still read things for the most part if I am far enough away but there are those frustrating times when it simply doesn't work.
Using the black font is not an option for me as it would not show up at all.
I think Lily was hot.
Morticia was pretty but not my type.
I loved both families, though

That is a very good observation! As I read your post that really hit home about both series. That may be a factor that draws me more to the Munsters. I like that they "think" they are the normal red blooded American family and your are right, would be horrified to realize they are different. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the Addams Family quite a bit too. It is just the Universal Monsters of the Munsters that draw me to them more. But I do love that observation.
The Munsters are more slapstick, the Addams are more cerebral.
I'm a huge Marx brothers Fan, and one of the head writers on "The Addams Family", wrote for the Brothers when they were at the top of their game. "The Munsters" was brought to us by the same creative team that brought us "Leave it to Beaver." "Leave it to Beaver was a good sitcom, and included some good comedy. The Marx Brothers starred in some great comedies, and included some great comedy. My opinion? The Munsters were good, but the Addams Family was great. No doubt, however, some find "Leave it to Beaver", funnier than the Marx brothers, but again this is just my opinion.
Bob Mosher and Joe Conelley wrote many of The MUNSTERS' episodes, and they also worked on several TV episodes of AMOS N' ANDY, which I think is one of the funniest TV series ever produced, along with CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU? (Which also featured Fred Gwynne and costarred Al Lewis). While they both showcase Gwynne and Lewis, CAR 54 is more funny, more often, than THE MUNSTERS, but in the case of CAR 54, it's a combination of good writing coupled with good actors. In THE MUNSTERS, the writing is only average to a little above average, and it's the actors that raise the bar and also raise the material. [The MUNSTERS win in the coolness factor over CAR 54, however.]

Charles Addams most identified himself with the bald guy who was finally named (By Addams) "Uncle Fester" and his New Yorker cartoons were a big inspiration for what developed into "The Munsters", where as "Lurch" was inspired by Boris Karloff, who's "Frankenstein's Monster", was a large part of the reason for the Universal films being a hit, and of course the second big inspiration for "The Munsters" TV show. Your photo, just as it is, is perfect.

The Munsters for me
I really liked both series -- I used to watch them in syndication when I came home from school every day. If I really had to choose, I'd go with the Munsters though ...
