Title: Best Modern Horror/Fantasy/Sci-Fi Directors
Post by: Toy Ranch on May 02, 2010, 08:34:48 PM
Mainstream movie-goers flock to "big name" celebrity movies.  For the horror genre though, big names often signal big bore.  Let's face it, if George Clooney is in a horror film, you probably aren't expecting any new ground to be broken.  But directors...  there are some directors who I'm in for anything they do in the horror genre.

John Carpenter
Frank Darabont
George Romero (OK, he's made some kinda stinkers, but I'm still going!)
Takashi Miike
David Cronenberg
Tobe Hooper
Sam Rami

Those guys make a movie in my fave genre, I'm there.

OK, I "stole" some big names, but there are others out there.  Only filmmakers who are still active, or have been active in the last 10 years or so, this is the MODERN movie forum, after all...  ;D

I'm not a die-hard fan of Eli Roth, Rob Zombie or Alexandre Aja but their names deserve a mention here IMO.

Man, what was the last feature film John Carpenter directed, Ghosts of Mars (2001)?

I won't go see films because Eli Roth or Rob Zombie directed them.  Actually, I'm liable to skip them for that reason, unless I hear something compelling to cause me to want to see them.  Alexandre Aja I'm always down for.

John Carpenter hasn't directed any feature films that have been released since that one, but The Ward is in post  production and should be out in a bit, and he has a couple others announced.  He's done some Masters of Horror episodes.

I'm suprised no one said Fulci.

Not my cup of tea, but def has a following.

Unless I'm wrong and he was a writer not the director?

Fulci hasn't been "active" for some time . . . but if he is, THAT would be something I'd pay to see.
