Title: Uncle 4E Tribute Idea
Post by: Gillfan on March 16, 2010, 08:39:30 PM
I was looking at the ad rates for the new Famous Monsters magazine and they are giving a generous discount for the premiere issue.

It occurred to me it would be a great gesture if we all chipped in $10 each and purchased a full page ad in memoriam of FJA. Something simple and subtle, perhaps a big picture of him then underneath somehing simple like "Thanks for everything!- Universal Monster Army" and then in small type the names or screen names of the members.

I know we have a few artists and graphic designers on here so I'm sure that idea could be (greatly) improved on.

The thing is we have to work fast as the payment and artwould would be due in the beginning of April.

So, powers that be, can we make this on official UMA project?

Did  you check to see if they have any space left?

The first issue, #251, comes out in July at the Famous Monsters COnvention in Indiana.  AS of last MArch Phil had more than enough material to fill issue 1 so we may have missed the boat already (assuming the magazine needs at least 3 months lead time)  Plus, with IDW taking a hold they may have filled issue 1 with entirely new content already.

As of last week space was still available.

According to their materials the deadline for ads is in April.

Doesn't look like there is much interest here in the idea, I'm more than a little surprised.

Almost anything said about the new FM opens up a can of worms. These are my personal thoughts about it only...

Scary Monsters and Monsters From The Vault have been very supportive of the UMA in the past.  We've never pooled money to buy an ad in either of them.  This new FM, I take a dim view of it.  Not that it can't be changed, but it's FM in name only.  They waited until after Forry was gone to start this up again.  I don't even know that he would want his name associated with it anymore.

I think I understand the place your idea came from, and that's a good idea from that perspective, but that ignores a lot of very sad history between Forry and the post-Warren FM and I'm not sure it's something we want to pay to associate ourselves with...  at least not until they've gone a ways to erase some of the old wounds of the past and shown their intentions to be good ones.

Again, just my personal take on it.

Toy Ranch- I undertsand and respect your thoughts.

On my part is was a timing thing, I saw the rate card, saw the discount for the 1st issue, and a light bulb went on.

A big part of me loves FM because of what it meant to me, so it's the concept and memory more than the actual thing, but I fully understand your point. I'm fond of those other mags as well, but they don't evoke the same emotion from me that FM did.

I feel you there, it's just that my warm fuzzy feelings about FM exist for the Warren FM only, and the FM that has been published since, by Ray Ferry or by this new guy...  it's the same logo, but that's the end of it for me.  Wells Fargo Bank still has a stagecoach on their logo, but no matter how hard they try, I can't see it as the same company that moved money through the west by stagecoach.  They have the same name, but the suits that run it today bear very little resemblence to the ones that ran it back in the cowboy days.

Love the Wells Fargo analogy.
You are correct.
Now I feel old.
Gonna go sit in the living room with the lights off and curtains drawn and watch some Hammer films.

Bobby, your take on this matter is alignment with mine. Perfectly said.

And thank you for the kind gesture towards 4E with your suggestion Gillfan. Your heart is in the right place!

I have to agree. I wish the new FM well, but I respectfully believe they should retire the title.

I echo the most recent sentiments. This is neither our nor Forry's "Famous Monsters". It was a nice thought though, and I would go along for love of 4E if it's decided to run the ad.

Phil Kim released an item to the press revealing part of the cover to the new FM.  He said that the issue will sell at his FM convention but that the big celebration will be at Comic Con.  I don't understand the mystery but since a comic book company is putting it out, they may have ahd some say about it all.

Hey guys -

Actually, we are running a Forry tribute piece by Joe Moe in FM #251, and we were hoping for comments from fans and celebrities alike to accompany it. I wasn't going to bring that up until the beginning of next week, but the UMA seems to be slightly ahead of us here.  :)

So there is no reason to pay for ad space to say what you want to say. I can't promise that everyone's words will see print (we could probably fill an entire issue with FM fans' comments alone), but maybe we'll work something out to get everything up on the website around the time the feature itself sees print.

We'll have more details on the site next week and I'll make sure that a link is posted here.

Oh, and...

Would you believe it if it came from the (Acker)man himself? The very first page of content in #251 is going to be the introduction that Forry wrote specifically for the launch of the new FM.
