This is a rare movie in 1977 about the phantom killing in Texarkana,Texas . Why have they not released this on DVD yet? This is a great movie! I have it on VHS but wondering why they have not thought about releasing it on DVD.

Yeah, I dig this movie, too... by the same guy who did THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK! And Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island is in it!!
I have heard of the movie but never seen it. I really want to see it. Is there somewhere online that you can see it?
You know, I'm not sure. It's been years since I've seen it myself! Very low budget and with a creepy, almost documentary feel to it.
You can download it from the net...just do a google search on it..that's what I did, and that's how I found out you can download it..
btw anyone know how to post a youtube video here?
One of the best low-budget drive-in horrors from the '70's. The rights seem to be tied up in legal red tape at the moment, stalling any forthcoming DVD release for now. This one should certainly be out on DVD as it is great.
Man....I remember seeing a standee advertising this in a theatre Lobby back in Bel Air Maryland, and felt a bit of a chill. I've always wanted to see this.
I'll take a look around to see who might own this now.

Yea, it's a great movie. I bought it for $2 at a yard sale on VHS. Very Good Deal!

I remember watching this as a kid on HBO. It was ok. I know it spooked me.

first time I saw it was on tv, back in the late 80s...you know when they actually showed good horror movies then.

Charles B. Pierce, the director of this (and THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK) passed away a few days ago.

I always thought this was such a cool title and could be used for a Vampire film, Werewolf film or pretty much anything else scary that comes at night. 30 Days of Night could have been called the Town That Dreaded Sundown. I have not seen this movie but for a weird piece of trivia. The town of Texarkana was named after James Bowie. Those were three states he had ties to, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Heads up for those that haven't seen this one or who want to see it again, TCM has it scheduled for Sat. 9/22 at 1:15 am!

dammit! I don't have cable
Good thing that my dorm has cable, but real problem is that I need to find TCM channel on it because I don't know where to find it. LOL
It is creepy and worth a few viewings.
TCM shows this 2-3 times a year, always early in the morning. They now use a widescreen print.Quote from: Opera Ghost on March 05, 2010, 11:15:31 AMMan....I remember seeing a standee advertising this in a theatre Lobby back in Bel Air Maryland, and felt a bit of a chill. MGM owns it, but they have no plans for a DVD release. Apparently, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton don't know about this film, so they could profess their love for it and produce an abominable remake that, at least, would get the original released on DVD.
... OR DO THEY?!

Just to clarify, it starts at 2:15AM Eastern Time.
There is a great widescreen DVD edition of this movie. I own one of these and the picture quality and sound are both superb.
The movie itself was something of a disappointment. I remembered something much creepier. It plays very much like an episode of TV's "Unsolved Crimes". But remember this was made long before such shows were all over the tube.
This is listed all the time on eBay:

Gotta be a bootleg. All my sources say it has never had an official USA DVD release.

that's what i was thinking too
Plus, they list everything but the distributor. I have a feeling that "remastered, anamorphic widescreen" print comes from TCM.
It comes from "Underground Empire" and is a DVD-R.
Just found my copy. The picture does look like a made-for-TV 70's Videotape. Maybe it was copied from a videotape, but it was very nicely done - very watchable. And the sound is clear and crisp.
This is NOT a great movie. I don't see it having a Special Anniversary, Director's Cut BLU-Ray Edition anytime in my lifetime.
The story and acting seem SO bland today. Not at ALL the way I remembered what I saw in the theater back in 1976.

They also spend too much time on the lame comedy elements.

What was released was the "director's cut." Unfortunately, director Charles Pierce and his son were killed in a car accident a couple of years ago. Supposedly, this is part of the hold-up on the DVD release. Pierce's estate hasn't been settled yet, apparently.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown IS awesome! It's one of my favorite drive-in films of the 1970s
I agree, but they did have too much comedy relief. I saw it in the theater and watched everyone in line with suspicion (like the closing scene in the movie).
there is this, It says they edited the brief nudity
"The Town That Dreaded Sundown" (1976) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxjOhpevkw0#ws)
And, of course, I completely forgot it was on, forgot to set the recorder, and will have to wait for TCM's next screening of it! Zombie Censored
Watched this one the other night, overall I liked it but I can see were it is a required taste! First and foremost is the misconception that this is a horror movie, or at least a horror/slasher movie in a traditional sense; It has giallo elements, police procedural elements, goofy comedic elements (which comes off as the oddist of all these genre samplings) and it's all wrapped up under the guise of a docu-drama but in the end very little horror persay. Gorehounds will be greatly disappointed as there isn't anything graphic, I wonder if there was possibly more filmed, especially during the stabbing scene?! The overall story just seems lacking but that is due more to the fact that we expect a final resolution at the end of most movies and this one (much like the real life case) doesn't have one, though they did at least try to enhance the drama with the chase (something that never happened in the actual case). This, like any "based on", takes many liberties with the source material but still remains true to the overall case much like Confessions of a Serial Killer and Deranged.
And like those what makes this most chilling is the fact that it is based on an actual incident where no one was safe....Maybe that gets lost on the world today since cases like this happen all to often nowadays!?
Back to the "comedy"; these elements, especially, seemed so off that the film itself seemed more like a effort that would have come out in the late 60's as opposed to the films actual release year of 1976.

And Pierce's THE EVICTORS with Jessica Harper. I've always wanted to see that film. It's on YouTube, but I want to watch it properly. It's nice to see Pierce finally getting some recognition as an overlooked auteur.
I wish Scream Factory would follow this up with a definitive release of THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK. So many cheesy public domain DVDs of that film, and not one decent version yet. Where is the negative for BOGGY CREEK? There must be some decent elements somewhere. BOGGY had 10 times the cultural impact of EVICTORS or TOWN, but it's stuck in PD Hell.
I purchased a so-so copy recently and just watched this for the first time last night.
I love that 70s horror feel to it--I think the Narrator was the same who did Narration for Horror trailers during that time, House of Dark Shadows comes to mind. Feel was very reminiscent of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I was amused by the higher billing that Dawn Wells got for her role

I have Scarecrow of Romney? Marsh, which I will start tonight
May 21st is the DVD/BR release date.

The remake we are getting sounds no better or worse than anything Depp/Burton might have concocted, though.

I've never seen this but am really looking forward to it. Hopefully Netflix will get it in shortly.
I first saw this two or three years ago. I had heard of the movie, but just never watched it. I found out it was about Texarkana and watched the movie. I enjoyed it, but what I like the most was when the different locations were being talked about, I kept thinking "I know where that's at."
Got my DVD/BRD combo in yesterday's mail. No idea when I'll get the chance to watch it, though.
