Title: Monster Beach Towels
Post by: michblk on February 03, 2008, 02:44:26 PM
I don't know much about these but wanted to share some better pics with the group.  Back in the 70's Mother bought my brother and I each new towels.  He received the Wolfman and I got the Creature.  I obtained his when he no longer wanted it.

It seems like a Frankenstein or Dracula should have been made, but these are the only 2 monsters I know that were made.

Lol...Those are great. I especially like the surfing Wolfman wearing the tiki head around his neck.

Yeah those are great. Lucky you getting them back then. That's awesome that they've survived so well, guess they didn't get used much?

As far as I know those are the only two that were made. I've never seen any other characters turn up.

Of course I would LOVE to have both of these. Maybe someday. I know they're huge but they would look great framed.

I like the Creature but that Wolfman is just amazing. It's a great likeness and him surfing with those shorts and that tiki necklace just really puts it over the top!!

Hmmmm.... you sure you don't want to part with those? ;D ;) ;D

That Wolf Man is priceless! Even though he's busy surfing, he still looks like he's ready to attack. Amazing stuff.

I've never thought about framing a towel before. I'm imagining it rolling up and stuff and being a big pain in the butt.  ;D

Thanks for the great pics, Brian!

Anybody have any idea who "B&D" are?

I wonder where the original art for these are?  I would love to see it.

I know we used them some, but after all these years, I really don't remember how much.  I'm not ready to part with them yet.  Maybe someday or if I'm made an offer I can't refuse....

I love the face on the Wolfman.  with new mysteries being solved and new items always popping up, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a Drac , Frank and maybe even a Mummy?   The 70's were the peak time for great novelty towels like this.

Hey michblk I was really just kidding, of course you don't want to get rid of them.  ;) I don't blame you! Thanks for sharing them though. ;D

Hey Brian, You've got two items I really really dig.  I was exceedingly lucky and bought an unused Creature towel, with a mfg sticker still on the back unpictured in an auction for a sealed Aurora Creature '72 glow kit.  I paid a lot for the pair, but don't regret it at all.  A tiki collector beat me out on the Wolf Man a few months back on eBay at $32 and now I regret not going $45 just to see.  Cool to know they are from the 70s, the fellow I got the Creature from thought he got it in the 80s but was unsure.

Will you tell me if either of your towels have fringe?  My Creature does, but the Wolf Man I saw does not.

Thanks,

Shannon

Did you have doubles, Dan? Otherwise I wonder what you were thinking? These are  way cool!

With its large size, I had nowhere to display it after the museum renovation. Trust me, I'm sorry to see it go, but that is just the tip of the iceberg of what didn't fit.

It's so wonderful, it really should be displayed!

I'm sure there will be more posters and artwork on the block soon!

Anyway, John Gilbert has one and I can visit his. LOL

I put it on my watch list.  It's a very cool item.  I wonder what else Dr. Shocker is going to unload.  Personally, I think his Topstones are taking up way too much space.  He'd have a lot more elbow room without them.

I too will be watching it.  Just curious what they go for.  Good Luck Dan, hopefully one of the UMA family will win it!  I would hate to see USBUYER get it.

Hey Mike, sorry to be absent for a bit, took a road trip, did a comics show in Atlanta, and typing from good ole' Zombophoto's computer right now.  I'll have to get home (which will be sometime after New York Toy Fair) to quote the sticker on the towel accurately, I seem to remember it being a California Beach Towel Co. or some permutation of that.   The Aurora kit has a sticker on it too, btw:  99 cents!

Thank God, the Topstones are mostly up high and out of the way!

However, some more stuff did end up there, tonight. Check out gracebuster as the seller.

That Wolf man kit brings back a ton of memories.  It, and the Creature kit were easily my favorite Aurora models as a kid.

Congrats Dan on selling the towel!  I see it went for a decent price, to bad it was USBUYER, but they have the $'s to spend!  I wonder what the Wolfman would go for.

oh my god, Oh My GOD, OH MY GOD!!!!!

I had the wolfman towel and I am always to this day talking about it and how much I wished I still had it...people usually think I'm nuts. Now at the very least I have a picture to direct them to to prove such a thing existed!

Thank you so much for posting these!!!

In the late 80's Spencers Gifts had horror/suspense film towels. Although not Universal Horrors, they were nice poster reproductions of Psycho and King Kong that I recall.  My grandma Carrie bought me the Psycho beach towel. Also, this is the same lady who bought me my first offical iron on t-shirt at the mall when I was a kid--Frankenstein! lol  They were really cool beach towels and they might pop up on eBay or something. I have mine at work in storage for safe keeping.  I'll have to photograph it one day soon.  They're pretty cool. I remember taking that beach towel to the ocean and I just recall one particular beachgoer walking up towards the boardwalk where we were beachin' it.  She sees my towel staggers and moves a few steps left away from my towel and continues her walk to the boardwalk.  We busted out laughing and quickly assumed that the old Psycho beach towel had a beachgoer freaked out.

Hi, I am new to this forum and have enjoyed reading up on all the posts and seeing familiar faces from other forums. What a great site this is. Just curious as to what kind of frame can you use in order to display a towel. I recently returned from Florida and purchased a Nightmare Before Christmas towel for my 3 year old which has beautiful artwork and I refuse to use it as a towel. Any info or pictures is appreciated. Thanks!

Hello kklloo and welcome to the UMA! Glad to have you on board here. My advice would be to consider using a poster frame. These can be found at various craft stores and maybe even Target or WalMart? I'm talking about a relatively cheap "ready to use" frame; not the kind where you would have to purchase all the parts and assemble it. That kind of frame could add up quickly. Hope this helps some.
