Title: Dan O'Bannon RIP
Post by: Cinemacabre on December 18, 2009, 06:56:52 AM
No details at this time but I got a call at 4:18, this AM, with the sad news that Dan O'Bannon has passed at age 63. He wrote or co-wrote Alien, Dark Star, Return Of The Living Dead, Blue Thunder, directed Return Of The Living Dead and did visual effects on Star Wars, to name just a few things on his resume.

Color me bummed... This is a sad one for me.

RETURN has long been a favorite of mine--I just met Don Calfa at HORROR HOUND in Cinci. and he talked about what a pleasure it was to work in that film.  I'm very sorry to hear this sad news.  Rest in peace, Dan.

I expected to hate ROTLD. I had read Russo's original ROTLD book and really enjoyed it. The thought that they were turning it into a comedy ticked me off. It was the great talents of O'Bannon, Stout, Karen, Gulager, Calfa and an amazing soundtrack that made me love the film as much as I do. Hats off to them and, again, RIP, D.O.

Dan's portrayal of Sgt. Pinback in Dark Star is a Sci Fi comedy classic. His talent and originality will be missed.

He did a lot of things well, and put his own unique stamp on many things.  His "Pinback" was one of the funniest performances of the 70's, too!  We used to laugh and laugh at all his hilarious lines and weird faces.  I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of Dan O'Bannon's work over the years, and bid him sad fond farewell.

"COMMANDER POWELL would've named it."

RIP Dan O'Bannon.
