-Craig
So, where in Miami are you from? ;D
When I was a kid (way back in 1965 or so) I learned this little song from some of my school friends. I remember the words pretty well, but for an English translation--well - -Babelfish did not do so well!
Chanukkah, O Chanukkah
A yontev a sheyner
A lustiger a freylicher
Nito noch azoyner
Ale nacht in dreydl shpiln mir
Zudigheyse latkes esn mir
Geshvinder tsindt kinder
Di dininke lichtelech on
Zogt "al ha-nisim," loybt G-t far di nisim
Un kumt gicher tantsn in kon
Chanukkah, Oh Chanukkah
Come light the menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather round the table, we'll have a treat
Shiny tops to play with, latkes to eat
And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago.
Gut Yontif, Y'all!
Shalom
I don't know if I could eat the brisket. I'm a little hesitant on meats that I don't know what they are. I think it's beef but I don't know the preparation. My grandmother used to make potato pancakes. We are Czech. I've found many similarities between Czech food and Jewish food. My grandmother used to even say "yoy" which is similar to "oy".
Ever had corned beef? Or its pepper-plastered cousin, Pastrami? Same cut -- different spices, just roasted. Better than prime rib. In the South, it is also great when smoked and/or barbecued.
We used to have Latkes when I was a kid, but then my Irish relatives called them Boxty. And the Scandahoovian branch called theirs raggmunk or hairy donuts! It is amazing how many European and Asian clutures have adopted the humble potato and made it their own.
All this talk is making me yearn for Katz Deli in NYC...The pastrami there is indescribable!!

Yeah, just ask Meg Ryan. ;)
I want on this bandwagon!
Happy Hanukkah to everyone on the UMA!
HAPPY HANUKKAH
Corned beef - I had it once as a kid and I didn't like it, but I do like Reuben sandwiches so maybe I'd feel differently. I never had pastrami before. Maybe I'll try it sometime.
