Title: FYI: phoney IRS rebate scam
Post by: The Drunken Severed Head on January 30, 2008, 01:32:00 PM
From my friend Ted Newsom comes this warning:

Dear Friends,
At my other email address-- which is totally unassociated with any business I have ever done-- I recently received an email announcing I was due an extra $547 refund from my tax return.  The email looked official; it had the IRS logo in the body of the letter, and it had a link to an official-looking site to claim your refund.  All I had to do was type my social security number in the box and.... wheee, check is in the mail.

The current "tax incentive" bill passed clearly gets people thinking optimistically about manna from heaven, or at least the government.  They're giving giving away money... right?

I asked myself... why would the IRS need me to give them my social security number?  And why would they notify me via email, particularly at an address I've never listed on a tax return?

It's a scam.  The IRS will never ask your number.

Please be cautious.

Yeah boy, I got this mail last year... it's been floating around longer than that, I see. Lousy crooks. (Well, I tend to say that when I get REAL mail from the IRS!)-
