Romanek drops out of 'Wolf Man'
Director exits film over creative differences
From: Variety
Director Mark Romanek has ankled "The Wolf Man," putting Universal Pictures in the position of holding together a film just after it patched up "State of Play" due to after the exit of Brad Pitt.
Romanek exited the film late Monday night over creative differences. The film has long had Benicio Del Toro aboard to play the werewolf, and the studio just set Emily Blunt ("Charlie Wilson's War") and Anthony Hopkins to play the other leads in the film.
The studio maintains that Romanek left the project in strong shape and that it expects to set another director quickly. No word on whether a Feb. 18 start date will remain in place.
Uh oh, this could be bad. Hope it's not Brett Ratner or someone like that.
As long as Stephen Sommers stays away from the project...(he's in pre-production on GI JOE)..I'm ok.
ANy time a director quits citing creative differences that tends to be a bad thing. "No I'm not doing that, that's a crappy idea!" But seeing that Romanek is best known for music videos with only one picture to his name, I'm not going to worry too much. Maybe Gullermo is available again. Tons of producing on his plate, but he's not directing anything.
I'm by no means a fan of Romanek but him leaving just leaves it open for someone much worse to step in.
Oh don't mention Sommers, I shudder to even think about it.
Never a good sign; but not always a deal-breaker!
(GONE WITH THE WIND, WIZARD OF OZ, etc.)
Best,

Pretty disappointing, personally. I think Romanek, with the right script, was on track to do something pretty damn good. Pulling someone in at the last minute is usually disaster. Fortunately, seems there's little chance it cold go to Sommers. Let's pray Ratner is tied up too!
Give it to David "The Rock" Nelson! I want to see the Wolf Man squaring off against a devil ant. That would be cool.
Please not Renny Harlan-- even though Harry Knowles says he is the replacement director!
Guillermo Del Toro should be tapped to become the director.
Blade II
Hell Boy
Pan's Labyrinth
Need I say more?
Latest word is John Landis has been approached.
I'd love to see Joe Dante direct.
Well both of them have already made werewolf movies so...
The last story I read said Ratner was in the lead to take over the project.
Ok now you're just trying to get me mad.
Just read on Entertainment Weekly's web site that Joe Johnston(Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III) is the new director for The Wolfman remake and filming should start very soon.
Del Toro, Landis or Dante would have been better but I think Johnson will do a great job too.
Del Toro looking at a possible remake of Frankenstein, according to the Sci Fi Channel.

Ooooooh! :o If he did a remake of Frankenstein, I definitely go to see it.
Maybe they can channel Curt Siodmak. :P
All kidding aside, I'm more worried about the script!
Wolf Man news on MSN.
Nothing new, but it's a good sign for Lawrence Talbot, to see the story in a mainstream forum.
Also, I like that Van Helsing is used as a gauge (of what NOT to do)

Joe Johnston (JUMANJI, OCTOBER SKY, THE ROCKETEER, HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS) is going to direct THE WOLF MAN. He's a solid if unspectacular choice, and he'll make a good movie. (He's somewhat old-fashioned, which, with this material, is a definite plus!)
Edited to add: Oops-- I overlooked Capthendry's earlier post announcing Johnston!
Well I love the Rocketeer, hey it's got Rondo in it!! Hope he does a good job.
"Scoop" Hendry beat me to it already. And how did I overlook it? Johnston is better than what I was afraid we'd get. Frankly I think he's better than his predecessor.
I just checked out IMDB. This movie is supposed to be due out in 2009. ;D With Joe Johnston as the director, I know we're in for quite a ride.
Hey everyone! Just got off the Sci Fi Channel website and they have reported that Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, V For Vendetta, The Lord Of The Rings) has been hired to play the role of Det. Aberline in the Wolfman remake. They also reported that the new release date is Feb.13th 2009.
Cool! February 13th of next year. Nice to have an actual date.
nice valentines day date movie...
Keep Roland Emmerich away at all costs!
I don't know if anyone has seen these yet but EW online has a 2 page interview with Rick Baker and 2 pictures of DelToro in FULL MAKEUP. I'm pleased.
