Title: Canceled Shows, I am so sick and tired of this happening!!!!!
Post by: Dr.Teufel Geist on August 17, 2009, 01:34:37 PM
Arrrgggghhhhh..........., Primeval, a great BBC scifi series has been canceled, everytime I start liking a new series, it gets the axe.
This happened with the Scifi series Invasion, as well as Freaky Links.

Sorry to hear but I'm glad it's not just me-

I've a whole list of favorite one season wonders dating back to the '60s~   ;)

The best canceled show was the 90's revival of Dark Shadows.  great show, I loved it---13 lousy episodes and ended with a cliffhanger. Oh well, at least I know what happened because they were all recycled from the 1960's show, lol! ;D ;)

Dr. Phibes, that was the one that went up against the televised coverage of the Gulf War, right? (I seem to remember wanting to watch that, but then the war started, and I did not have command of the remote.)

Mine was Firefly.   It was witty, intelligent, and I absolutely loved it... which apparently was the triple kiss of death.

I hate it when they end with a cliffhanger and then sell the DVD sets for the "complete" series.  It amuses me that this topic comes up, as I just recently watched the DVD sets of Firefly and The 4400.  At least with Firefly, they did the movie SERENITY as a follow up.  The 4400 more or less wrapped up the major story thread, although it certainly could have have answered a lot more questions.  I hear that they will wrap it up with 2 books, the first of which is out now ("Welcome to Promise City").  Another series that I was watching that ended with a season 1 cliffhanger was Surface.  This was on the same year as Invasion.  Both series ware available on DVD, but complete?   Not quite.

American Gothic.Great show that was on then off then different days then off then a year later they finished it with little announcement. I have the boxset and it has digital flaws which I've heard is common with this set.
Kindred, another great series. The lead actor died in a Euro car wreck. What about Jericho which went on hiatus for 2 freakin years. I agree that too many good intelligent shows go bye bye whilst the crap keeps rollin along for way too long Who cares about the surreal life of rich brats? Obviously too many clueless twits. Wasn't Friends on for like 8 0r 10 years? WHY? Look at the shows that are popular. It tells you about the intelligence , actually lack there of, of the viewers. That is exactly why I watch maybe 5 or 6 channels and have a crap load of DVDs including around 1000 old TV shows.

Yup, that's the one, Liz. It was also preempted many times for breaking gulf war news.  The dvd set is really good, except for the cliffhanger ending, and the lack of special features.

It seems, with a few notable exceptions, that the good shows die young.  Which is just as well.  Way too many programs start out good--or even great and then "jump the shark."  After which, we are all treated to several seasons of lame has beens with the same old jokes.

I don't know what is worse:  a great program lasting one season (or less) and leaving its fans wanting more; or watching the last season of a once great show now on life support.

Jackie Gleason's immortal sitcom The Honeymooners lasted only a short time before Gleason himself pulled the plug saying he did not want it to go stale.  The most memorable episodes of I love Lucy came in the first two seasons.  Bob Newhart tried to kill off The Bob Newhart Show after 4 seasons, but was forced by contract to go a couple more.  And it showed.

Even The Munsters and The Addams Family were starting to get worn when they were cancelled.

I'm still mad about the WB cancelling ANGEL back in 2004! It was having one of it's best years ever and they decided to cancel it because it was costing too much to keep producing..they were intent on replacing it with a new DARK SHADOWS remake that never got past the pilot because it was so bad.
This, coming from the same geniuses that kept 7th Heaven rolling for so many seasons after it had died in the ratings, not to mention SMALLVILLE that cost more than ANGEL to produce, and is now going on a ninth season!

At least Supernatural is still going strong, although I dont like where it's heading.

There is a new show that will be airiing before 'Supernatural', it is called 'Vampire Diaries', and it's about two Vampire brothers, one good
and one evil fighting over some poor innocent girl.

Hi Fester,
I agree with you about the Munsters and the Addams Family.  You can only stretch the scare things so far.  I also think it's better for the shows to go when they are on top of things not after they jumped the shark.  Happy Days went on forever.  Happy Days is where they coined the phrase jump the shark.  MASH went on forever, too.  The Beverly Hillbillies went on until the shows went on and on.  The last couple of seasons were ridiculous.

Happy Days should have ended when Ritchie left.
There never-ever should have been a Joanie loves chachi series.

I liked watching M*A*S*H*, but only the ones with Col.Blake, I didnt like Potter.

Wasnt there a sequel to Three's company?

Jackie Gleason's immortal sitcom The Honeymooners lasted only a short time before Gleason himself pulled the plug saying he did not want it to go stale.

The half hour filmed sitcom only lasted one season (55/56), but "The Honeymooners" had been a regular sketch (and sometimes the entire show) on Gleason's various variety shows for a few years before that and for many years after.

It was called Three's A Crowd, involving a married Jack Tripper, his wife of course, & his meddling father-in-law. It bit the dust fairly quick I believe.
The first season of MASH was the best, but I thought they should've called it a day when Frank & Hot Lips broke up.

As it was, the TV version of the Korean War lasted longer than the actual war.  Although, technically it is still going on--never had a peace treaty.  Can wars have reruns too?

Chatty LMS:  Yep, that is the origin of the phrase.  Fonzie's motorcycle jump was about the last episode I ever watched.  Unfortunately, too many shows have died the lingering death.  Laverne and Shirley should have never left Milwaukee.  But I am getting sidetracked:

The Night Stalker and its sequel, the Night Strangler were pretty good for their time.  But I don't think Kolchak the series should have lasted as long as it did.  Headless motorcyclists??  Maybe if it jumped over a shark tank . . . . ::)

I don't remember Three's a Crowd. HATED 3s Company. I remember a spin off called The Ropers dealing with their Land Lords.

I forgot about The Ropers, better than Three's A Crowd, but that's like saying the mumps are better than the measles.

REAPER got canned, as I understand it, because of too much controversy.  God fearing folk didn't like the thought of the Devil always winning.  I think if it were on later it would have fared better.  THey tried to save the show by having the dude actually work for a Higher Power at the end but it was too late by then.

The BIG LOSS is MY NAME IS EARL.  Apparently this show scared too many people who thought it was a reality series.
;D

I find that hard to believe, with other dark shows out there, that are not canned, like "Supernatural"
I have read many articles on why Reaper was canned, and it comes down to ratings war with American Idol.
Now, with that being said, there will possibly be a Reaper Cartoon and a Reaper Comic Book coming soon.

Farscape was another great SCI FI series that was cancelled do to production costs. Never watched the SCI FI channel after its cancellation.
