Title: WAMAC: Women's Auxiliary Monster Army Corps
Post by: Elizabeth on August 15, 2009, 07:06:00 PM
Welcome to the Women's Auxiliary Monster Army Corps (WAMAC) at the Universal Monster Army (UMA)!  Dedicated to the memory of our distinguished commander Field Marshal Elsa Lanchester, this thread can serve as a rendezvous point for women members of the Universal Monster Army to meet other like-minded women, and a place for discussing issues pertaining to and of interest to women horror fans of all ages.

If you are a woman who is new to the UMA, welcome!  Being a woman horror fan can sometimes feel a little lonely-- but rest assured you have sisters-in-arms here at the UMA.  Please don't be shy or intimidated about joining the ranks and posting.  If you have already joined and been lurking and reading at the site, and feeling a bit hesitant about posting, this thread might be the spot to dip your toe in the waters and get the hang of the process.

A note to our male comrades... this thread is not exclusionary, and you are most welcome to join in the discussion.  However, although the barracks here are decked in camo, you will probably find yourself among throw pillows and scented candles at times; as ever, we know our UMA brothers will conduct themselves in a manner befitting officers and gentlemen.

The UMA is under the direction of our esteemed General Terry, the Famous Monster of Minneapolis.  If for some reason you are new to the site, and this thread was your first stop, please be sure to head over to the Induction Center, and consult the rules and regs therein: http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0 (http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0)

~May the Bride of Frankenstein bless this thread and all who hiss in her.~

(Can't we drink the champagne instead of whacking the bottle on the thread?)

To get the ball (or grenade?) rolling...

Pretty Scary is one of the best web sites out there devoted to women horror fans.

http://www.pretty-scary.net/ (http://www.pretty-scary.net/)

Anyone use or visit that site?  Take a peek... see what you think.

(But remember to come back to the UMA... you always want to come back to the UMA... just click your heels together and repeat, "There's no place like home...")

I think we should keep this thread for the girls.  If a bunch of guys start posting, it kind of defeats the purpose.

Hello there Miss Drac, Chatty, Nicole and Cuz/vpdogjoe! Great to see you here!

Miss Drac,  you need to give your sidekick Momula a nudge and tell her to stop in here and say hello.  She is in the UMA and we sure don't see enough of her!

DepressedLarry, Toysoldierman and Raymond, good to see you too... and yes, we ARE creepy! ;)  Raymond probably has a point about the focus of the thread (and thank you to the moderators here for all the work you do, and for creating such a wonderful site).    Our brothers are always welcome, though-- we don't want anyone thinking they can't post a question or suggestion or such here.  We love you guys.  (We just did not want to expose you to nail polish fumes if we get to painting nails or something.)

Cuz/vpdogjoe, that is an excellent reminder about the Halloween season! I think before I met you, I had never considered craft fairs as the place to find stuff to enhance my monster/horror collection-- now I do!  As for Hallmark-- I love those stores! It's taken them a while, but a couple years ago I noticed their Halloween line started to get more sophisticated.  I have to drive a bit to find one (mine closed) but I want to check out that creepy box you mentioned!  I will report back!

Miss Drac, I have a Yankee store right next to where I grocery shop, and I did notice a little skull candleholder on a poster in the window.  I'm going to pop in there next time I am shopping and see what they have.  Anything in particular you recommend?

I really dig those Life photos from the Black Cat audition. Those cats are so cute!

My mom's fiancé has a black cat named Bear. Every time I see Bear, I want to pick him up and take him home with me. Here's a photo of him:

My mom is a cat person, so I guess I take after her. Dogs, on the other hand, I don't like. Our neighbor has three of them and sometimes they keep me awake at night with their barking. >:(

Oh, can I paint Scatter's nails? Should we go with a bold red color or perhaps something more manly, like silver? Or maybe just a simple clear coat to give them some shine? ;D

I took drafting in Jr High.  It was just me, one other girl, and about 20 guys.  I seriously wanted to learn drafting.  The other girl took it for the boys and made sure her skirts revealed her butt.  The guys called me "Joe Draftsman".  I thought it was cute.   ::)  I figured out years later that they were making fun of me.  >:(

Elizabeth, Thanks for sharing that article about girls digs horror flicks.  I went to Michael's (craft store) today and they got lots of Halloween stuff out.  Lots of props of skulls, rats, gargoyles and many more. Just going down that aisle sure put you in Halloween mood!

You are most welcome, Cuz! I hope that you enjoyed the articles.

I was at Michael's last week, with my Mom-- but she did not want to go in (waited in the car) so it was a quick dash and  I could not linger or browse very long.

In another thread on this forum someone mentioned Michael's "Spooky Town" line (if I have that right) of miniature houses had a little wolf man figure where the tombstone said L. CHANEY on it.  I popped in to get a couple of those (which I happily found on sale) and while there bought two little busts (resin, faux stone look) that really have the fun look of the busts at Disney's Haunted Mansion-- one is the Frankenstein monster (says Frankenstein on it, but... ) and the other says Bride of Frankenstein

And yoo hoo Miss Drac... from now on I must say get thee behind me, girl! I went into the Yankee Candle shop today and you unleashed a monster! ;-D (Will have to share that adventure later, though, as well as two nifty Halloween t-shirts finds at Target today.)

Almost every thread here in the UMA, are made by guys or posted by guys.
So the UMA gals would like a place for themselves.
It's not excluding the guys, but we should let them do their own thing, and stick to our 90 million threads ;D

Jawsddd, it seems that you are new to the community, having just joined today.  Welcome to the boards and the UMA.

From your posts it seems you popped by this thread here first thing, rather than swinging through the introductory threads.  It's always a good idea to go there first and introduce yourself to the community so the folks here can learn more about you.  You will find the sections for introductions in the GUEST BOOK on the home page.

And to reiterate what has been said here... this thread (as evidenced by the men who have and are posting in it) does not exclude men.  However, if you have concerns about the thread topic or the content, the most direct and effective thing to do is to click the link at the top of the page where it says STAFF LIST.  That will take you to a list of folks who moderate the boards here.  You can contact them directly via private message, regarding anything having to do with this thread that might be of concern.

Miss Drac, I took your advice today and while I was out going to the grocery store I popped into Yankee Candle. It was loaded with temptations!  They were out of the little skeleton in the coffin lights at my store, but they did have a catalog with a picture of one.  Happily, it turns out they can ship things, so although they were out, I was able to order one and it will be here very soon.  I'm going to keep it out all year on my desk here with my year-round monster stuff... and his name will be Coffin Ray.

I picked up some BLACK (oooh!) tea lights for the coffin guy when he arrives, a couple votives... and I got the double taper candle holder that is like a skeleton American Gothic, which I thought was pretty unique.

There were so many lovely things, though-- it was hard to decide.  And in the catalog they had a skeleton playing a pipe organ that really reminded me of the Phantom of the Opera-- made me think of you, Miss Phantom Fan!  ;)

The whole UMA site is fo men and women.  This one thread was just started as a fun thing for the women who are in the minority around here.   The ladies don't mind the men particiapting, we just want to avoid dominating this one thread.  The ladies participate at the other threads as well, so this isn't the only place you'll hear from them.  Rob

Exactly.

I took a wrong turning at Albuquerque! What am I doing on the women's thread, oh I know. Why don't you set up an award, the Linda Miller medal of honour, were it can be awarded to the person who makes a great contribution on the board. Also I'm very sure that she would be proud of her sister's. Now I'll leave by the back door if you don't mind.

TV Horror, great minds...

This morning I was thinking about Meek.  I was sorting through some old PMs, and I have one from her that I have saved and can't bring myself to delete.  I was thinking how I miss reading her posts, and was hoping she was looking down upon things here warmly.

That suggestion is so good though, it probably should be extended beyond the confines of this thread alone, to the entire UMA.  Meek really did represent a lot of what make connections here rather special.

Turns out jawsddd wasn't a real person after all, it was a "joke" ID someone set up.

Joking around is a good thing, we all like to laugh and encourage it, but a good joke is one where everyone comes out laughing, not just the people pulling it.  Before you ever think about doing something like this on the UMA, consider if everyone else is going to think it's funny before you do it.

Hint:  People don't like having their time wasted or emotions toyed with....

Now, back to your prank-free WAMAC thread.  :)

So... with Halloween coming up, I was wondering if anyone has any fun or scary recipes they would like to share?

Here are a couple of quick and easy ones that I made last year-

Spider Crackers

Ingredients:
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon peanut butter
48 butter-flavored round crackers
1/2 cup chow mein noodles (or you can use pretzel sticks)
1/4 cup raisins

Directions:
Spread 1 teaspoon of peanut butter on the tops of 24 crackers. Place three noodles on each side of each cracker and top with the remaining crackers. Spread a small amount of peanut butter on each raisin; place two on each cracker for eyes. Makes 2 dozen.

Carrot Eyeballs

Ingredients:
Carrots
Cream cheese
Pitted black olives

Directions:
Slice carrots into 1-inch thick chunks. Top each with a blob of cream cheese and one half of a pitted black olive, and serve.

And here's one I want to try this year. It looks very cool:

Melon Brain

Ingredients:
1 small round watermelon

Directions:
Use a vegetable peeler to remove the entire green rind, exposing the inner white rind. Slice off the bottom of the melon to create a flat base that will keep it from rolling. With a toothpick, outline squiggly furrows that resemble the folded surface of a brain. Carve narrow channels along the tracings with a sharp paring knife to expose the pink fruit beneath the rind.

Holy mackerel is that melon brain the coolest thing ever, Nicole!!!

Zombie Shocked

I am serious, that looks utterly amazing!

The other recipes sound great too (I've seen the crackers before, but with pretzels, not the noodles, and I think the noodles would look better)-- but that melon brain is really clever!

(It just needs a sign... "Abby Normal.")

Sorry to have bailed on you all here of late, ladies!

This summer I've been wrangling with some stuff with my mom, who has been in the hospital twice, and not driving-- so I've been running a lot this summer, visiting her when she was hospitalized and then taking her places when she was out, like physical therapy, the doctor, errands, etc.  (I have a friend who calls this being a "Professional Daughter.")

Last week the summer chaos really hit an apex...

I don't have children of my own.  However, I have a teen boy who I met through a mentoring program who is very, very dear to me.  (Nicole here has met the young man.)  He is a wonderful, great kid-- never a cross or smart-aleck word out of him; he is talented, creative and funny, just a nice kid, and a big horror fan (so we share that).  Last week, he became the unwitting weapon in an adult fight.

Again, I am not a mom.  However, I think in the last couple days I've had a good glimpse of what it can feel like -- the momma bear gene was activated, put on battle station red alert, and I felt like I could have gone full-out Godzilla on the perpetrator of this cruel farce that was so destructive to the child I love.

REPEATEDLY I thought of your old post tag line, Nicole... about the way to a man's heart being a quick thrust and then pull up with the knife.

As of Monday afternoon, everything has been resolved, he is safe again, and things are in place so this cannot be repeated.  But I honestly feel like years were taken off my life worrying and wondering-- my chest HURT this weekend, from the worry and anxiety.

My hat is off to the moms here at the UMA... keeping all your little monsters safe!  I imagine the rewards are great, but it is a huge responsibility.

Anyhooooooooo...

I'm looking forward to getting back into our "ramp up for Halloween" chat here-- I've missed it!  As soon as I get a little more caught up on reading posts around old Camp UMA, I will post some of my recent collecting adventures and purchases!

Chatty, these sound really cute!

Over the last couple years, Target has been getting some really terrific Halloween stuff in.  I've nabbed all kinds of stuff that I use year-round for just general horror-theme fun.

In fact, my official Saturday night Svengoolie-watching popcorn bowl (black with a bat on it) came from Target.

Two years ago I got a very fun Frankenstein monster lamp.

I have a Target about a mile away from me, where I do most of my grocery shopping.  These days, every time I go in to the store I walk to the far back corner where the seasonal stuff is, hoping to see the Halloween goodies out... but so far it's still in the "Back to School" mode.

Last year they had some lovely table linens, and I snagged a set of skull napkin rings on the clearance.

If you want to see horror, see folks duking it out in those aisles during the 50% off sale. ;-)

Any JOSS WHEDON fans here?

I've always enjoyed Joss Whedon's work because it's fresh and creative.

But, beyond just being clever and sharp, Whedon occupies a special place for a lot of women horror/sci-fi fans because he insists on creating strong, intelligent roles for women in his television programs and movies.

My favorite would be his television series FIREFLY.

Anyone else a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse or other work?

Any favorite characters from any of Whedon's shows or movies?

I'm heading to a special charity fundraising event here in Chicago tonight, where they are screening his Dr. Horribles blog and the movie Serenity-- which is what got me thinking about this.

Whedon's favorite charity is EQUALITY NOW, an international human rights organization dedicated to action for the civil, political, economic and social rights of girls and women.  (They tackle issues like rape, domestic violence, reproductive rights, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, women's voting rights and political participation, and gender discrimination.)

Welcome, Marsha

Elizabeth, On Joss Whedon.... I'm a big fan of Buffy and Angel.  The episodes from Buffy  "Once more with Feeling" (I also love old musical movies, so this appealed to me very much!  )  and  "Hush" (I think this was the creepiest episode, with the "floating" men!) are my favorites.  And an episode that tickled my funny bone was "Beer Bad".  I believe we all can relate to Buffy character because she had to be strong, independent, and struggle with making tough decisions--but she was at the same time a woman with tenderness and emotions.  We've all been there.  We have to make choices in our families, parents, jobs, sometimes tough ones...balancing heart and "hard facts".

Elizabeth,

It's amazing that you were discussing this.  I recently just got through watching the Firefly series and the movie SERENITY.  I had picked up the set used some time ago, but just got around to watching it, although I had watched SERENITY before.  I really enjoyed the series.  The characters, stories, and dialogue were all fresh and well thought out.

Based on this, I am going back to watch the Buffy series (I am now on season 2), because I had originally skipped it because I didn't care for the original movie (the one with Kristy Swanson).  I may rewatch the movie though, because I'm guessing that although the some of the parts were miscast, maybe the writing and plot was decent.  I am really enjoying the series though, so I guess that after I'm through with Buffy, I'll have to move on to Angel.

Apparently, I'll also have to check out Dollhouse too?  Guess I'll be busy.

This cute jack-o-lantern is about a foot tall and is made out of a dry gourd. When you plug it in, it lights up (small night-light type bulb). One of the ladies I work with gave me this last year at Christmas.  If there is anything I love getting for Christmas, it's more HALLOWEEN!

I know this is a girlie place, and I'll just have to risk gettin cooties ;D
But, I had to answer the question, Major Fan of Buffy and Angel series.
Spike is my fave character from Buffy and Wesley is my fave from Angel.
Spike is the perfect hated Badguy/Goodguy, they hate him when he's bad, they hate him when he's good, he just cant win.
Wesley is hillarious, my fave episode is, Where he is pretending to be Angel.
Fave episode from Buffy is the Halloween episode, where they become the costume they are wearing.
Fave Monster from Buffy is "The Gentlemen"

See ya Ladies L8TR,

Rob and Dr. G, thanks for your contributions here!

It's great to find more Joss Whedon fans!

My background with Buffy and Angel are a bit spottier... although I do enjoy vampire stories, and caught episodes here and there, I was not a regular watcher of either show.  I always thought those shows were well-written and clever, but never got hooked.  (My brother and mom were both dedicated Buffy and Angel fans.)  For whatever reason, Firefly really resonated for me.  (And Rob has inspired me to think about getting Buffy on DVD and working through the series... )

I have not seen Dollhouse (need to track that down on DVD), but added it to the post because I knew it was current.  (And major oversight to have left out Angel on the original post there about Whedon shows/fans.)

I think Cuz Sarah/vpdogjoe made some very astute observations about why Buffy (and other Whedon characters) appeal to women fans... balancing tough choices with the realities of life.

Listening to the commentary on Serenity the other day, Whedon was talking about the moment when the doors open on River (at the end of the movie) with the two blades in her hands.  He said something like, "I've been criticized for always using adolescent girls as my heroes.  I don't care."

Thinking about what Cuz Sarah said, coupled with that remark from Joss Whedon, made me think... what I also like about his work is the ENERGY.  Perhaps, watching them, we feel young again.

Cuz Sarah, that gourd is BEAUTIFUL! I bet that is really lovely when it's lit up! What a wonderful gift.  Is it tricky to store something like that from year-to-year? I imagine it's delicate.

Miss Drac, that skeleton is going to be a great addition to your dungeon-office there! And MORE COUPONS! Your buddy Momula warned us that you are the Coupon Queen!

I'm having a blast and getting very excited about Halloween as I read through this thread.

I was at Target last week, and saw the seasonal back-to-school stuff was being downsized and consolidated, and Halloween aisles were starting to appear.  FINALLY!

I never watched Buffy.
I did like Buffy on Family Affair.  Funny, I thought there was some connection!

Hope to find some there.  Last year I got some handmade doll of Frankenstein.  I will let you all know what I find soon.  Has anyone find any at your local craft show??

He turned 9 this year so I don't want to keep doing the same "small kid" games. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I'm dusting off this thread in honor of something pretty cool that is happening this week...

Thursday, April 22nd, marks the 75th anniversary of the 1935 premiere of BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Horror had, and will always have, scream queens-- from the silent heroines (like Greta Schröder and Mary Philbin), to the classic heroines (like Fay Wray and Evelyn Ankers), to our modern heroines (like Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis).

However, James Whale's marvelous production of the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN gave us something more-- it gave us a female monster.

Whale's vision was brilliantly brought to life by the artistry of make-up man Jack Pierce and costume designer Vera West, creating an iconic image that remains instantly recognizable to this day.

And-- it gave girls their very own misunderstood monster to relate to.

For a gal who only got a few minutes of screen time, she sure made a big impression!

FRANKENSTEINIA, the Frankenstein Blog, is honoring the 75th Anniversary of THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN this week-- so be sure to check in this week for some marvelous posts and pictures celebrating the history of this important horror movie!

Applause, applause!

Sorry, I'm a cooties-laden boy, but I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment, was glad for the news of the anniversary and wanted to show my appreciation.
Let's just say I heard you from outside the clubhouse window!

Applause!

I agree Liz, just a few moments on screen really made an impact for me! Elsa Lanchaster will always be the first scream queen for me. Its great having a female monsters for us gals! I love woman power no matter where I get it from. The movie shows that even us women can be beautiful and terrorifing at the same time. Also Mary Shelley showed us that even though the world is run by men, women have talent too and we are worthy have greatness!

HAPPY 75TH to my favourite film, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and to the most glorious DIVA in horror history.
Thank you also to James Whale, and the magnificent cast...who, with THE BRIDE will live forever.

Elsa Lanchester made a great Bride of Frankenstein.  When I think of The B o F I always think of EL.  Madeline Kahn did a good job, too.

I love the domestic scene in Young Frankenstein with the Bride and Monster at the end...Him reading the financial section of the paper in bed and the Bride talking about going to a dinner party. ha ha! A perfect look ahead of what might have happened IF the Bride did like the Monster in The Bride of Frankenstein .

"I put a special hamper in the bathroom just for your shirts. And the other one is just for socks and poopoo undies."
