Title: "Twilight Zone" or "Night Gallery - Both by Rod Serling.
Post by: Uncula on August 14, 2009, 04:26:58 AM
Of these series, my question is, was one show better than the other one (If so, which do you like the best.
Second thought, where they really the same show, but simply "dressed up in "different" clothes"?  ;D

Isnt every show like this then the same, but dressed differently and have different hosts.

TWILIGHT ZONE
NIGHT GALLERY
OUTER LIMITS
DARK REALM
TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE
TALES FROM THE CRYPT
MONSTERS
ETC,ETC.

They are all pretty much the same, whether you like one or the other better.

Apples and oranges. Twilight Zone enjoyed a lot more creative control by Serling, including writing. With Night Gallery he was more or less just an emcee.

Twilight Zone -
Stupid reason.  I wasn't allowed to stay up late enough to watch Night Gallery, however I did manage to catch a few episodes here and there.

As a kid, Twilight Zone was just weird, but the Cliff Robertson/ Ventriloquest episode gave me nightmares for years to come. The writing, awesome.

NG seemed more horror driven--even the opening sequence of Night Gallery frightened me!

Yes, apples & oranges. I'd go with TZ by a slim margine: it ran longer, thus covered more creative ground.

Both were impressive, but I like ' Night Gallery ' slightly better because of it's more supernatural take on episodes.

I think Twilight Zone is the epitome of creativity on TV. I dont think we have ever been entertained or sucked in to a story since the days of TZ...everytime I watch an episode, no matter how many times Ive seen it, I watch it to the end and I'm amazed at the ending.

Night Gallery is very cool too and I have been watching it alot more in recent times. Like Uncle Creepy pointed out its much more straight foward with the supernatural and horror based themes...which is why it often hits the spot. Short, to the point, quick to get to the "creepy stuff".

Twilight Zone to me is just the be all and end all of the genre though. Every episode, every time...Rod Serling is the man!!!...So I go with TZ, but wouldnt ever sell NG short...just apples and oranges I guess.

Night Gallery seems dated, while Twilight Zone seems timeless. That, and TZ hit the mark more often.

Twilight Zone for me-it allowed for a wider range of themes. Shows could be frightening, funny, sentimental or just plain weird. On Night Gallery these theme was pretty much in the horror genre, with mixed results.

Twilight Zone . . . hands down.

Sure, Night Gallery had it's moments but even the best of those were pale in comparison to TZ.

Twighlight zone.  But don't dismis the other series as all being alike.  "One step beyond", liked to deal with actual episodes of the uncanny, and Outer Limits had the coolest opening, and tried to include a monster the series creator called "The Bears"in each episode.  Night Gallery had it's moments, but unfortunately, the people running the show refused to trust Rod Sterling to have that much creative input.

Twilight Zone
TZ touched far more people.
Almost everyone can name a favorite TZ episode, only die hard monster fans like us can name a fave NG episode (Pickman's Model and The Snow).

Twilight Zone was, without a doubt, better.

Serling had control over most aspects of Twilight Zone.  And they had better writers.

Night Gallery was a pale copy.  Few, if any episodes had a single story.  Each half hour was chopped up into short vignettes which did not allow for much except a quick shock, surprise, OHenry-style twist and so forth. When it was first on the air, I remember being disappointed.  It seemed like Rod Serling was just standing there reciting lines.  He did not seem to even believe in the program.  And it showed.

Today, my recollections of episodes for both programs reflect my opinions.  For every Night Gallery episode (or segment) I can remember, I can recall 15 or 20 episodes of Twilight Zone.

:o Wow! I am amazed that this thread is still going on!  I originally posted the question on Aug. 17 2009 and now, even with so few replies, it still continues.  I suppose that it all comes down to my finally asking a good question that relates to us all!   thrhrt

I really like both of these shows. I enjoy those type of shows like outer limits, the zone, night gallery, tales from crypt, tales from the darkside, etc. Has anyone every watched the show "Monsters"? It's a similar one from the 1980s. I really enjoy it.

I love them both but Night Gallery Seemed darker to me, not as much sci-fi as TZ (maybe im wrong but thats the way i remember it) besides always loved the paintings. Would love to get my claws on an original night gallery painting. L

Thanks for posting this missdead, made me check to see if NG season 3 had ever been released.  Love ALL these anthology shows, but Night Gallery remains my preference.  Always seemed darker than Twilight Zone was, plus more horror related.

'Tis a shame. Nobody has any love for Darkroom hosted by James Coburn. Poor lonely unloved Darkroom, I remember you.

I vaguely remembering it running for about a dozen episodes back around 1980 or 1981.
But for the life of me, I cannot recall a single episode. :-\

Yeah, that was pretty much it. I think there actually a total or 16 episodes. So you are right on the money.
