Title: DragonCon
Post by: dlhenderson on July 27, 2009, 02:42:15 PM
Does anybody ever make down to DragonCon? I was an official guest for a few years, but for the last couple I've just skulked about the proceedings (instead of being stuck at a table).

We're going again this year! Hope to meet:

Leonard Nimoy
Malcolm McDowell
George Romero
Tobe Hooper
Michael Biehn
Doug Jones

Met Robert Englund last year and he was so cool!

Its a good show and Atlanta is a hospitable town. It is more gaming/role playing related, but there is always some cool stuff to find there.

It's gotten very big. Sometimes it has seemed more trouble than it was worth, and one inevitably has to miss something. I missed the Zombie Parade a couple of years ago due to a conflict with another event. There have been fine moments though. I've had friendly conversations with Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury. I traded prints with Basil Gogos. He complimented my art, which made my day. Afterwards we touched base a few times during the weekend. Last year I met James Randi (The Amazing Randi!). There's something fun and bizarre about seeing the likes of June Lockhart, Soupy Sales or Tippi Hedren strolling around.

I've been collaborating with Bob Burden on a card game (featuring some of my drawings). He took a prototype out to ComicCon. We might have a more finished version at DragonCon.

The list I saw for this year also included:
Terry Gilliam
Louise Fletcher
Patrick Stewart
Neil Innes "The Rutles", "Bozo Dog", M Python associate
Anthony Daniels
and
Tom Felton  "Draco Malfoy" from the "Harry Potter" films

If I weren't going to Monster Mania to meet my hero John Astin, I'd be there!

Terry Gilliam? That's way cool.

Neil Innes appears to have slipped off the list last time I looked. the part where he is directing the music in the "Camelot" song in "...Holy Grail" is one of THE funniest moments in the film. Love him as Sir Robin's Minstrel too.

We are heading down as well this year, for the first time!

We'll be in the parade, in our Ghostbuster gear, along with what sounds like 2 exto conversions, and 45-50 ghostbusters! This is the first time that many guys got togther in ghostbuster gear, so it should be way cool!

One of the ecto conversions just left Denver this am, and they even have an ecto tracker online, as well as a twitter and rss feed for them!

So is there any way to hook up with others down there?

I'm scheduled to be helping out at The Art Institute of Atlanta table on Sunday from 10: 00 to 3:00, although I hope to escape the table at some point. I think it will be located near the art show.

I couldn't get by on Sunday, but did stop by on monday, and was a few of your pieces up in a another booth.. they knew you, but obviously I missed ya.

I didn't realize how large your pieces were! Pleasant surprise.

I was kinda worn out by the time Monday rolled around, so I didn't get back to the con (even though I live just up the road in Decatur). The pieces you saw were in Bob Burden's space. Those are fairly bad reproductions that Bob has been carting around, but they are close to the size of the originals (20 x 26"). Bob is an infamous "cartoon surrealist" who likes my work. He wrote Mystery Men, as well as the continuing Flaming Carrot Comics and the recently relaunched Gumby Comics (he won the Eisner Award for those). Anyway, he's always up for a new scheme. Prior to DragonCon, Bob suggested we do a card set. That's something I've thought about for awhile now; kind of an homage to the old gum card sets. Here's a shot of a few of the prototypes we had at the con. It may evolve into a game of some sort.
I did see a few Ghostbuster folks walking around. I asked one if he was (or knew) Gareee. He wasn't and didn't!
Anyway, sorry I missed you, Dude!
BTW, I did catch Terry Gilliam and Neil Innes (2nd pic).
Oh, and an excellent robot...
Cheers!

I got a great pic of that robot as well..and there was an excelltn Big Daddy there from bioshock! (Actually two)

Seems the best thing to do for costumes is hang out in the evenings in the hotel lobbies.

We had over 50 guys in ghostbuster outfits in the parade.. if you have facebook, you can also look for me there, and I've been tagged now in many a shot for some reason.

I like the idea of a card set, and I've been considering having that creech pic you posted here printed at walmart or staples in wall hangable format. Too many ideas, not enough time.. LOL!

One other thing I thought of that could be interesting.. there are 2d applications now that can take something like your art and make a 3d relief map out of it. You could then send that to a rapid prototyper, and get an actual 3d print of that done. I'm thinking mask the background so it would be "flat" and then make the 3d print from the remainder. You could even vaccuform that result, and sell 3d "prints".

3-D prints. That's a wild idea!
One thing I did with the creech pic was to place the image in my iPhoto library. Then I placed it in the "Fluid" app on my iPod Touch. It's very cool to see the creech drawing wiggle as if it's underwater.
