Title: The Films Of PRC Studios...
Post by: Memphremagog on July 26, 2009, 11:55:16 AM
Just looking at the titles that were produced by this Poverty Row Company, I'd say they were a decent candidate for a DVD box set, complete with extras & commentaries when possible. The list reads like a list of classic low-budget horrors from the W.W.II years..but showcasing the talents of some great names in the field: Bela Lugosi, George Zucco, Glenn Strange, J. Caroll Naish, John Carradine, Lionel Atwill, etc..when they werent working for Universal, they paid the bills doing films here. These movies have some pretty decent casts and/or production values, if not always the scripts, going for them.

Most of these I've never seen but The Devil Bat was a really decent movie.

I never was into the poverty row stuff all that much, but if somebody put these out in a multi set I'd buy it.

I forgot the Devil Bat had a daughter. I voted for dad.

I know some of those titles turn up on PD discs. Does anybody know if all PRC stuff is PD?

Many of these are worth checking out: Dead Men Walk is a pretty decent vampire film with George Zucco in a dual-role and features Dwight Frye in one of his last appearances, Fog Island is worth seeing if only to see the two greatest mad doctors of them all(Zucco & Lionel Atwill) face off in a clash to the death, the Mad Monster is Zucco creating a wolfman out of Glen Strange, Bluebeard features John Carradine as the infamous lady-killer, Strangler Of the Swamp is a pretty creepy ghost story featuring Charles Middleton(Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon) coming back from the dead for revenge and The Monster Maker features J.Carroll Naish & Glenn Strange(before House Of Frankenstein) turning Frank Morgan into a deformed wretch so that Naish can go after Morgan's daughter.

Most of these films have a few gems in store for the viewer, if you like the classic horror stuff.

I think the majority of these are public domain, Strangler Of the Swamp, the Brute Man(with Rondo Hatton as the Creeper!), The Flying Serpent, The Monster Maker & Devil Bat's Daughter are available through Image as far as I know.

I have seen most of them, over the years. Trouble is, unless you buy them, there's not much chance of seeing them anymore.

I went w/The Devil Bat too. I've seen most of these, as I have a public domain channel in town, & most of these are really on equal footing IMO.

Question though, ( & I probably overlooked them): Did Monogram, or PRC make The Vampire Bat (Fay Wray, Lionell Atwill & Fay Wray) & The Gorilla (w/Lugosi & the Ritz Bros.)? These two are my favorite "poverty row" pictures.

The Vampire Bat (1933) was made by Majestic Pictures (their only horror movie).

The Gorilla (1939) was from FOX.
