Title: Favorite Silent Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy Classic..
Post by: Memphremagog on July 24, 2009, 09:48:49 PM
I put in some titles which have certain macabre themes or elements even if they did not have outright horror or fantasy elements..also, I have omitted London After Midnight on purpose, as I dont think anyone on here may have seen it in it's intact form(TCM reconstruction doesnt count.)

This is the hardest one yet. I love The Phantom of the Opera, Metropolis, Haxan, Cat & the Canary, Nosferatu, The Mysterious Island & the Golem equally! Masterpieces all!

But out of admiration for my favorite entertainer, I voted for the Phantom of the Opera.

If it werent for the overall creepiness of Nosferatu, I think I would've chosen Phantom myself..

I want to see the 1925 version of Lost World, but the one I voted for is Nosferatu, I love this movie.

Lon Chaney Sr. in Phantom of the Opera, this is my second most loved movie after Frankenstein.

I've never thought about it until this thread, but IMO these silent classics are on more equal footing as a whole than most of the "talkies" that followed. I think it's because filmaking was in it's infancy & people were brimming with ideas & innovations.

I had to pick a favorite for the spirit of fun, but all the movies listed here, & many that weren't are undisputed masterpieces (to me). Think about it.

For me it was a toss up between Vampyr and Nosferatu, but I went with Nosferatu.

I would have to say nosferatu. Second would have to be the phantom of the opera. The ending of that movie is just great when he fools the mad mob before they beat him.

This is a near impossible task!! The older I get the more I appreciate and love watching these silent classics...I almost cant choose between The Lost World and Phantom...2 movies that make me happy when I glance over at my dvd rack! I guess top 3 goes like this for me

Phantom Of The Opera....I simply cant vote against Lon Chaney ever

The Lost World...No Lost World, no Kong! I consider this a "prequel" to King Kong and its almost as awesome.

The Man Who Laughed...Like you said not horror but there is a huge "horror influence" its dark, sad, a very underlying creepy element and no Gwynplaine=no Joker....I love this film!
