There was a bit of talk about starting a thread along this line. There are a ton of avenues and areas of discussion we could get into. Hard music includes any form of metal , hard rock, industrial, hard techno/trance,and hardcore. Since I am starting the thread Please PLEASE refrain from including "Gangsta Rap" which aside from old school country, boy bands and "praise" music is without a doubt my most DESPISED form of "music" period. I'll spare the rant on why I hate it so much.
To start,I was maybe 10 the first time I heard stuff by Blue Cheer. 12 when I discovered Alice Cooper. 13 when I got a K-Tel record double set and first heard IRONMAN. :o 8) YEA thats what I'm talkin about. I was hooked on hardrock and metal for life. A few years later I was telling anyone who would listen that The Scorpions ,Judas Priest and Motorhead would be HUGE. Hardly anyone had ever heard of these bands at that time. And so it started. Metallica ,Exciter, Pile Driver , Carnivore, Black Flag, So many bands from back then some long gone some still going strong. Death Metal,Industrial, Hardcore. I remember going in to THE hot store in the area and spending a days wages on 4 albulms a 12" EP and a maxi single. If I spent a days pay today on basically 5 CDs the wife would skin me. Let the banter begin.
I like alot of the hard rock/ metal groups that most have never heard of like
Zodiac Mind Warp and the love reaction, Smashed Gladys, Laaz Rockit,Warlock,
I cant remember the group, but their album was called Screwed,Blued, and Tatooed.
Trouble was another of my faves, I even once bought a Raegae metal tape, I think I wound up throwing it in the lake.

I've heard of all those bands and saw Trouble twice back in the late 80s/early 90s. Huge stuff with big Sabbath /Witchfinder General influence. There was a bit of misconception that they were a Pro Christian Doom band. Which I can see considering some of the lyrics (case in point ,the album The Skull)but some of the early stuff had to do with getting away from drug addiction (Run to the Light). The Christian stuff,at least according to the mags back then was merely a theme to go with.
I too believed they were Christian type, the Album I had was called Trouble.
Some of the songs were, The Misery Shows, Black shapes of doom, etc.
I loaned the tape to a friend some time ago and never got it back, been meaning to go
and buy the cd, but havent got around to it.
I always liked "Vomitus", especially their classic track "Blowing Chunks".

Then I know you'd like "Amputation" & their classic track "Wooden Pegs".
A little known band who put one album of industrial metal was a band called Passafist. They released one cd, which was way too short at just over 40 minutes, but did include a song called "The Dr is In" which featured sound bites from the film Dr Strangelove. Loud, crunchy guitar with screaming vocals. I usually don't like this form of music, but this one really clicked with me. Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols were the main forces behind it. Perkins was a session guitarist who has played with darn near everyone on the planet!! His latest release is Pistol City Holiness, which has elements of his indie sound mixed with blues and rock. A formula for sonic bliss! It's available at cdbaby.
Passafist pops up on ebay every now and then. It was released with two different covers. I own them both.

I bought an issue of the metal mag Decibel the other day. It came with a free CD of EXTREME death metal. Out of the 18 tracks there was only 1 I liked. A couple more were ok and the rest pretty crappola. So I spent a couple more hours checking the bands in the mag that had adds on Youtube. Again it was a 20/80 split of cool vs crap. Not sure if I'm just getting old or what. I still like most of the bands I was into in the 80s and 90s. Some I checked out again on Youtube. I spent about 3 hrs on there today. There were a few where I was " ??? :o I used to like this stuff? For every good band especially in the more extreme genres there are 50 that pretty much suck. It's like they try to outdo each other on who is the most brutal/evil/sickest etc.
I am finding aside from the a fore mentioned older stuff what I lean towards these days on the newer side is split 3 ways. Sympho/Goth. Tristania being my fave. Earlier Therion as well. Viking metal with heavy folk influences (Moonsorrow , Ensiferum) and Cybermetal (The Kovenant , Deathstars)
Looks kinda like M.M sounds a bit like a heavier Sisters of Mercy.

The vocal deliver in Death Metal is sometimes referred to as "vomiting" depending how guttural it is.

And Lundy, how did you know about an old 80s black metal band named Amputation? ;) Yes,there was.
I have been listening to NIGHTWISH alot lately, ever since I heard the song Nemo.
I own 3 cds with Tarja as the lead singer, and the new cd with the other woman singer, cant remember her name.
Nightwish is a Finnish Metal/Opera style group, for those out there who dont know who I am talking about.
I also tune in on Saturday nights from 11pm to 3am for F.H.S./Altared States on Z94.1fm (local station in Oklahoma).
F.H.S., stands for (edited)FREAKIN HARD (edited)STUFF, they play alot of 80s-09 Metal bands, Hard,Heavy,Speed,Scream.
Then there is HeadBanger's Ball on MTV Satruday night as well.
I really dont care for the metal music that screams, I like to understand what is being said.
I love metal to death!! In many of its forms and sub genres. When I was a kid I found KISS and that was it. I know I'll catch hell for this, and ALOT of guys I hang out with that are into metal cant stand it and just dont get it but pound for pound..you will never see a better live show...EVER. The 1st 6 recordings are some of my favorite albums in the history of music and to this day I credit the original line up for getting me intrested enough to pick up an instrument and play in metal bands all my life...including the present.
After KISS, its pretty much a 3 way tie with Maiden, The Misfits and Slayer...then I found death and black metal and my entire world changed, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Immortal, Dissection...basically if it was Bay Area Thrash, Nordic Black Metal, Tampa Death Metal or anything that came from Sweden, I probably own it and love it.
Cant take away from the godfathers i.e. Possessed, Priest, Venom, S.O.D., Bathory, etc...which leads me to today's scene and the departure of my current drummer......The word "brutal" is the most overused word in metal music and not to be a closed minded a-hole but these "new" death metal bands are both far from brutal and far from death metal. 1st of all, stop wearing your sisters paints and worry about playing your instrument...not how many notes you can fit inside a split second, not how low you can get your vocals so its beyond a death metal growl, but a "burp" that you cant understand and PLAY METAL!!!!!
Not to say I dont listin to new stuff, there a few bands out there that are somewhat new that I like...its just nice to see the veterans dust off and go out there and crush these kiddie bands.
When I say I love metal....hell, in my car right now I have Cannibal Corpse: Evisceration Plague...and its right next to Rainbow: Long Live Rock N Roll........it used to be back when, if I said "I like metal"...that meant I was open to everything from Sepultura to Deep Purple....go to the shows, support the scene, BUY the music and stick together!!!
Here are a few tracks from bands that I love that all sound pretty different....enjoy!

I am a huge fan of KISS too, I may not like some of their sell out soft crap, ya know kinda like what Metallica did.
I will just type some of the bands I listen to.
---------------------------------------------------
METALLICA(OLD STUFF)/ANTHRAX/TYPE O NEGATIVE/MOTORHEAD/KROKUS/ACCEPT/JUDAS PRIEST/CRUE/SMASHED GLADYS
MEGADETH/HAMMERFALL/DRAGONSFIRE/MALMSTEIN/CSFH/MANSON/KISS/IRON MAIDEN/SLAYER/WARLOCK/LITA FORD/SABBATH
WASP/ETC.
I know theres a ton more, but cant just think of them right now.
I still think KISS:ALIVE! is still one of the best rock albums in history. Favorites aside, they're one of the best bands I've ever seen, bar none.
Also a big KISS fan. Don't know how I forgot to mention them. The first 4 albums and Alive 1 and 2 are CLASSICS. After that they kinda went downhill and turned into commercial crap. Not a big fan of the Anthem stuff like Rock and Roll all Night or Shout it out loud. Prefer songs like Parasite , Strange Ways , Black Diamond , Deuce.
In fact I was just cranking that stuff in my back yard a couple weeks ago. Swilling beer ,doing landscaping and a little headbanging as well. My neighbor was out with is kids ages 3-12. I got a few strange looks especially when the wife and I got into a kinda loud discussion on the music , the concerts etc. One of the best shows for sure.
BL
Checked out the vids. All pretty good stuff except.....C.C. Never a fan. Obviously I've heard of all of them except Repulsion. I'm not sure why you refer to them as Grindcore. I listened to it twice and both times I heard something similar to better stuff from Venom.
Nice to see fellow KISS Army soldiers!!!.....I agree about KISS ALIVE! and actually when I was a kid ALIVE II was pretty much the be all and end all for me.
Has anybody here got or heard Jigoku Retsuden? The Japanese only KISS record of the re-cordings? I got lucky and have a bootlegged version on my ipod but Im desperately trying to get an original copy from eBay.
It is AWESOME....1st of all, Eric Singer doing Black Diamond..its incredible!!! He NAILED IT!!!! Believe me I was the 1st one to give Gene and Paul the cold shoulder when Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer started dressing as Peter and Ace...but now that I've heard this, and they are honest about the direction of the band...you can bet your butt I will be their front and center for the new tour and when ..finally, this winter A NEW ALBUM writtin by Paul Stanley himself drops!!!!
Anyway, Jigoku Retsuden translates to..."Intense Transmissions From Hell"...and does not dissapoint, 1st song is Deuce and Gene's vocals, being a bit weathered and gravel throated with age..actually made this song more intense...Paul's voice is like 1976, new renditions of Love Gun, Detroit Rock City, I Was Made For Lovin You (which I hated when I was a metal purist)...they all rock...I highly recomend this CD...it goes well with drinking beer, lifting weights, upsetting your neighboors, breaking furniture and other things that we embrace as fans of hard rock and heavy metal \m/ ;D
I long time ago I saw a great Canadian import (& two RUSH) single disc KISS live albums, shoulda, coulda, wish I'd jumped on them at the time. I think the KISS CD was from the "Love Gun/Alive II period. In a few hours I'll remember the title. I always though too, that "Revenge" was possibly their best post-makeup album

I like Nightwish also. Been into them for a few years tho I don't listen to em as much as the other stuff.
There are quite a few Goth metal bands out there that are quite good. If you like Nightwish you may want to check out Epica.
A bit mellow for me but still decent. I prefer the heavier goth that use the "Beauty and the Beast" style vocals. Beautiful female combined with Gruff almost deathlike male delivery. Tristania is IMO the best at this.
As for understanding whats being said, isn't that what lyric sheets are for? ;) I would say my current rotation contains 25% of non English speaking bands. Primarily from the Scandanavias ,Russian , Polish , German and even Hungary. Lots of good stuff coming out of Eastern Europe these days.

Wicked I know where your comming from and there are bands out there by todays standards that sound much more like "grind". Repulsion is kinda the 1st though, I mean its basically Venom, Celtic Frost and Discharge in a blender but they are credited for giving bands like Napalm Death and Carcass (the "gods of grind") their inspiration. Theres actually notes from Shane Embury of Napalm Death in the remaster of "Horrified" and Scott Karlson has appeared as a guest vocalist on a ton of current grind cds.
I guess its like Venom..they coined the term Black Metal...all these Nordic BM bands created their own sound and cause and said it was Black Metal.....When I think of Venom, it doesnt "sound" like Black Metal at all....but I guess in its own right it really is the original.

Nowadays there are so many genres and sub-genres it's crazy. Even crazier is that looking at YouTube on avg of 3-4 hrs a week you see in the comments people ripping on each other and bickering over what to classify something as.
Take Black Metal as example. That I know of there is old school-Raw and primitive-sympho-Melodic-Ambient(not really metal but still a sub-genre)-Gothic Black... am I forgetting something? And the people in the bands compared to one another are like night and day. You have the intelligent sympho keyboard rich vampire/occultists at one end and the totally evil satanic nazi's on the other.
Unless I see a cool monster mask I gotta have I am pretty tight with my $ on anything else. So I do ALOT of research and look and listen before I buy something. I've downloaded a fair amount of cool stuff free off various sites. I can deal with all kinds of lyrics but ones that I won't condone are the ultra violent/splattercore ,Racist or homophobes ,violence against women, joy of killing animals or pro Nazi.
I hear ya man, there was a time..maybe only like 5 years ago that every single sunday my ritual was to pick up my cousin and take a 45 minute ride down the Garden State Parkway to a place called Vintage Vinyl...which is a good old fashioned CD store run by a few guys...I met Obituary there, Slayer and Rob Halford both did a meet and greet in there and its just good times...plus they used to sell sideshow monsters...
The point Im making is that it didnt matter, I would go and in a single clip pick up Mayhem, a King Diamond bootleg, Napalm Death and The Plasmatics and it was just all good!!..Not only was it all good but it seemed the guys hanging out there were all on the same team. Now theres 50 billion sub genres and half of em are ripping off the other half....I know theres symphonic and ambient black metal, or grim and frostbittin black metal....Horror grinders like Regurgitate or politcal anti-facists like Napalm Death grinding away too.....It's just time to get back to that old school feeling it used to be...waiting for albums to come out, going to the shows, supporting friends bands etc etc.....much like here at UMA...metal is, or should be a tight knit comunity..
And Wicked I agree....I listin to a TON of stuff where the lyrics are brutal...but those said topics you talked about, Im not with them either....its one thing to touch on topics, its another thing to promote them.
Having said all that......I'll leave you guys with a song that I love to death which came after the Misfits and before solo Danzig...a horror shout out to us all! Hope you dig it!

too bad I cant hear it, 6 minutes takes 3 or so hours to buffer on my side(dial up) :'(
My favorite KISS song is "God of Thunder".
I also forgot to mention that I like Ramstein <----hope I spelled that right.
I listen to all kinds of music, and metal is part of that. As far as "nu metal" goes (as opposed to Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc.) and crossover punk stuff I listen to The Accused, Amon Amarth, Anthrax, Artillery, Assassin, Bathory, D.R.I., Death Angel, Destruction, Discharge, Exodus, Exumer, Gojira, Gorgoroth, Heathen, Incubus, Kreator, Mayhem, Megadeth, Metallica, Nuclear Assault, Onslaught, Overkill, Plasmatics, Sacred Reich, Sepultura, Possessed, Slayer, Sleep, Sodom, SYL, Testament, Wehrmacht (looking at my CD collection)
There's a lot of music that is very HARD that isn't metal though. Poison Idea is hard. Verbal Abuse, Black Flag, some of the early Stooges stuff, Necros, Butthole Surfers, Legionaire's Disease, Kildozer, Black Flag, it goes on and on. A lot of "classic rock" stuff is very hard. Uriah Heep, Nazareth (Love Hurts notwithstanding), AC/DC (esp Bon Scott years), you talked about Kiss (saw them on the Dressed To Kill and Destroyer tours), Nugent, some of Queen was very hard (listen to the Sheer Heart Attack LP), even Aerosmith was really hard at times.
Then there's all sorts of industrial stuff that is hard. Some harder than metal. Bands like Chrome, Coil, Einsterzende Neubaten, Genietorturers, Ministry, Nervous Gender, Revolting Cocks, Boyd Rice/NON, SPK, Swans, Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Wumpscut are/were very hard.
I like listening to Judas Priest, my favorite album is "Painkiller".
We used to listen to it during some our D&D sessions, we listened to DIO's "Magica" and a band called Amorphus as well, when we played.
I'm going to list some of my favorite band/album, and would like for to tell me what your favorite album is of the band I mentioned.
(if you even like or listen to the band that is.)
METALLICA-KILL'EM ALL OR MASTER OF PUPPETS(tie)
I love Priest too. Saw 'em live a couple of times back in the day. A buddy of mine gave me a board tape a long time ago of a live performance that is just killer. It's live at Long Beach Arena 5-5-84. They did a King Biscuit broadcast of the show. Better than Priest Live album.

I saw them with Van Halen opening when their first album was new and Sabbath was touring to support Never Say Die I think, or maybe Technical Ecstacy.
The first time I saw Van Halen was right after that album came out and they were the first band on a 3 band bill at a 2800 seat auditorium. We went to see Van Halen. The second band was Montrose. After that... Journey and we left about 2 songs in ;D
nah, I'm not with yahoo, oh well, no one on here needs to see my ugly mug anyways.
Journey, could have been worse, like Chicago or Boston.

The Ramones were the best. They grew up on Mad magazine and monster movies. Hard to believe that Johnny, Joey, and Dee Dee are gone now. Jeez.
Another GREAT one is The Scream by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I saw them at a hole-in-the-wall club in Atlanta in the early 80's. They did the whole Juju LP (including Halloween). Siouxsie was dressed in black and orange and was at the top of her game. They played the album flawlessly.
I like some of the songs by Ramones, but I'm not really a fan of Punk.

Which I can see considering some of the lyrics (case in point ,the album The Skull)but some of the early stuff had to do with getting away from drug addiction (Run to the Light). The Christian stuff,at least according to the mags back then was merely a theme to go with.

Cool!
I had a few bands 20-30 years ago ;D
Actually one of them is getting back together. I picked up my bass and started playing again for the first time in over 20 years a few weeks ago.
Thats cool man, yeah its not surprising to hear you say you are picking up the bass again... Its in the blood!!! What kind of music do you guys play?

I saw them with Van Halen opening when their first album was new and Sabbath was touring to support Never Say Die I think, or maybe Technical Ecstacy.
The first time I saw Van Halen was right after that album came out and they were the first band on a 3 band bill at a 2800 seat auditorium. We went to see Van Halen. The second band was Montrose. After that... Journey and we left about 2 songs in ;D
I saw the same tour without Montrose at the Aragon"Brawl" room in Chicago. 1st row BACKSTAGE. Bill Ward was maybe 8' from me the whole time. The Sab fans were not diggin V.H especially when David Lee came out and started jumping around in yellow spandex. He had to duck a few beer bottles. Then some Jerkward tossed an M-80 in the crowd and a 20-30 person fight ensued including an usher being knocked cold with a folding chair. Glad I was in the guest area.
Also saw Sabbath a year or so later with Dio. Good concert but as good as the first one.

I think Sleep are a bit to stoner slow. IMO the GODZ of doom are Candlemass especially the early stuff. Messiah Marcolin's vocals are a bit too clean but this stuff moves ya emotionally.

DRI and Discharge are punk bands too. Dead Milkmen are a pop-punk band. I never much cared for them.
Actually DRI was considered one of the first crossover bands. Discharge was great with their shortish cuts of repetitive harshness and shouted vocals "SKIN LOOKING LIKE BLOODY HARDENED MEAT, A HELL ON EARTH , A HELL ON EARTH! MEN ,WOMEN and CHILDREN GROANING IN AGONY FROM THE INTOLERABLE PAIN OF THEIR BURNS, A HELL ON EARTH HELL ON EARTH. I'd call that early political H.C punk.
Bobby I could hug you right now..in a very hetrosexual way...I LOVE DISCHARGE!!!!.....I remember years ago when I was a kid and had Anthrax: Attack Of The Killer B's on cassette and they did "Protest And Survive"...being a stupid kid I just thought it was their song.
Years later I was in and out of death metal bands and though it was the furthest thing we sounded like, found the Misfits and fell in love. I guess from hanging out in that section of the record store looking for stuff I was rummaging through Discharge and at that moment "State Violence/State Control" came on in the store...the rest is history. That band is responsible for sooooooooo much goodness!!! A TON of metal bands give credit to Cal and the boys...Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Venomous Concept etc...With that it opened me up to Ramones, Exploited, GBH (AWWWWWWESOME), Black Flagg, Reagan Youth (AWESOME-ER!)
That pretty much allowed me to see how much could be done with 3 chords and a crapload of creativity, energy and volume and though I still consider myself a "metal guy"...I have a huge place in my heart for punk.
When I say PUNK...I dont mean Blink 182 or Green Day or anyone else who thinks colored hair, down strumming and bass intros are punk...anyway...having said that......

This band played some kinda Ventures/Fuzztones/Cramps meets Metal stuff. We used to get billed with bands like DOA and Suicidal Tendencies, but also bands like Pussy Galore. Then Rigor Mortis used to ask us to play with them too, so it was hard to classify. The songs here are from an EP that was produced by the record label and didn't come out sounding much like the band sounded live. We were much heavier, and esp after adding a 2nd guitar player soon after this came out.
The song "Predictable" is one we did but has a different singer on this recording.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's kind of a blend. One guitar player is very into surf and has been playing in an instrumental surf band for the past 15 years.
http://www.myspace.com/thebiggunsmusic (http://www.myspace.com/thebiggunsmusic)
The other guitar player is kind of a Keith Richards style player.
The drummer on that record was a Bonham style drummer, but he's in the UK now, so we're playing with the old drummer from the Vomit Pigs, who is more of a Keith Moon style bash and crash guy, but solid as you can get. Jim, the singer, has been fronting bands since the mid 70's. Hard to say what it will come out like this time, but it should be fun.
Well if you guys are ever down to do an L.A. gig let me know.

Hey headbangers...this is my band! LOCKED from NJ. I am the vocalist and wrote a few of the riffs you hear, here and there...I also take care of the lyrics and vocal patterns...probably because the "musicians" in this band could care less lol. The songs you're hearing are about 6 mo old and just recently got recorded. The songs from 2005 are actually almost 8-9 yrs old, they were from a demo...and its why it sounds horrible.
We just finished this recording and broke our asses doing it...we're all in our early 30's now and it was just VERY difficult to get together and write. When we do though...its still alot of fun. We were getting ready to book some shows and take to the stage once again and our drummer bailed out. Which is both good and bad...bad for the obvious and good because he doesnt have a normal/stable bone in his body......anyway if you dig death metal, hardcore and things of that nature take a listin and hope you get a kick out of it!!
Hey BlackLagoon, that "Divinity Dies" sounds pretty good man, thanks for posting the link, I'll check out the other songs as well.
Awesome stuff there Blacklgoon! When is the cd for sale?
Thanks Creeper!! I appreciate that!!...We're not sure when its gonna be for sale because our drummer left and we have to re-do how its gonna be packaged and stuff. Anal Blast. I could post a video off YouTube but... I like it here.
Theres also Seth Putnam's band Anal C--- who is much better at making fun of things then making music. There used to be a guy in a wheelchair that followed the band around and they would sing Elton John's "I'm still standing" to him...where the guy in the crowd "Wheels"...would retort by saying "Putnam backwards is Manput" Anyway...Seth had a stroke due to smoking crack and is now somewhat paralyzed...in a recent interview he said "dont think I dont find this f'ing hysterical"
Hows that for dedication??.....Anyway, dont waste your money on a cd, because they really do suck!!
Sorry if this post was a little "much".

Didn't they do a "song" Pepe the Gay Waiter? I got that on a compilation of death metal back in the day. This came on and I was like WTF is this. I believe they "Morbid Florist" and something like " I Like it When I see You Die. Crazy crappy stuff.
Your right on the money Wicked. I mean the titles of the songs are good for a chuckle but I think thats about as far as it goes...for me anyway.
As far as band names go, I've always been partial to "Nurse with Wound" and "The Toiling Midgets".

THAT my friend is an understatement. I could tell some stories about him but the thread would get locked and I'd get banned.
Lets play an alphabet game, this was inspired by Doc's 5 faves of the bands he stated. We'll go in 3's...so it will be like this..."A" 3 of your favorite bands with said letter, then a favorite song from each....I'll start and we will all follow with the same letter and give it like a full day for everyone to catch up...IF you come in much latter, dont start at "A" just jump in wherever we are....we'll keep going till we all hit Z and then start again...should give us all a better idea of what we listin to in the realm of "heavy" I'll start....
"A"
At The Gates- Under A Serpent Sun
AC/DC- If You Want Blood....
Agnostic Front- Crucified
Continue with "A" until the regulars here all had a go..then onto "B" and so on....
Articles of Faith -Up against the Wall
Angelic Upstarts -Police Oppression
Addicts -Songs of Praise
AC/DC- Back in Black
ALICE COOPER-Poison
ANTHRAX-Metal Thrashing Mad

ALICE COOPER
ADAM & THE ANTS (Not the pop solo Adam Ant, the early punk stuff)
AEROSMITH back in the `70's
K give it a bit, lets wait for Wicked before we move on to "B"
I don't know, as a guitarist some SteelyDan stuff is pretty hard...I got Reelin in the Years and My Old School down, but there's a couple spots in Bodhisattva I need to sit with the tape and...OHHHH you mean HARD music not "hard" music!

Alice Cooper - Ballad of Dwight Frye.

The "B"s
Black Sabbath-Children of the grave
Black Label Society-Bleed for me
Britny Fox-Girlschool
A thousand years ago I was a huge Sabbath fan. Back then I never would have imagined Ozzy would end up better known as a TV celebrity. Then Judas Priest came along. I remember seeing them in a small club called Louie's Rock City. I was up front watching Glenn Tipton fiddling with an analog delay to get that flying saucer effect for Invader. The next time I saw 'em was at Towson, MD... motorcycles and machine guns firing over the crowds. Other bands I was really into were UFO, AC/DC, Hawkwind and the Scorpions.
Then the Dead Kennedys twisted my brain.
I listen to mostly retro garage stuff now but Jerry Cantrell and Buckethead continue the metal sound for me.
Bathory-In Conspiracy With Satan (Hail! and RIP Quorthon!)
Biohazard- Hold My Own
Beherit- Drawing Down The Moon
Betray My Secrets-Oh Great Spirit.
Black Flag- Nervous Breakdown
Blessed Death-Kill or Be Killed. A homage to the 80s subway vigilante Bernhardt Goetz.
Give responsible/viable citizens the right "to carry" and the "scum" will disappear. >:(

CINDERELLA-GYPSY ROAD
CIRITH UNGOL-FROST AND FIRE
CRIMSON GLORY-VALHALLA
Can't believe Blue Oyster Cult didn't appear in the B's.

Death - Empty Words (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB8hn4vMJ9Y#lq-lq2-hq)
I love this song and album so much, I had to post it for those who might not have heard this. To me this is when the Godfather of modern Death Metal...seperated himself from "Death Metal" Even the lyrics are just so damn deep and meaningfull!.... R.I.P Chuck...still my fave! Put the lyrics up to give the full effect..hope you dig it, its probably one of my top 5 songs ever written and thought I'd share:
Ashes and promises share a bond
Through the winds of change
Words are blown away
When visions that should be
Are tattooed in your mind
The power to let go
Is sometimes hard to find
The answer cannot be found
In the writing of others
Or the words of a trained mind
In a precious world of memories
We find ourselves confined
Claws so razor sharp
Ripping at the spirit
[Chorus:]
Promises a potential to hurt
Is anything real?
When forever is to be until
Deep inside, in the world of empty words...
No escaping from those haunting
empty words...
[Solo: Schuldiner]
Do you ever feel it?
A craving that is so strong
To by thought rewind in order to find
Expectations that shined through the doubt
That soon would turn into the price
Of what a word will be worth
When tomorrow comes
To be and we are left
Standing on our own-
And seeing what is real...
The answer cannot be found
In the writing of others
Or the words of a trained mind
In a precious world of memories
We find ourselves confined
Claws so razor sharp
Ripping at the spirit
[Repeat chorus]

Ok, so I'm listining to the satellite the other day and as usual I tune into my favorite show "Ian Christie's: Bloody Roots" and this week was Part 6 (can you belive 6 hr long shows on this already?! Ian Christie is the MAN anyway..) of "Bloody Roots of Greybeard Metal"...and they played a few tracks from these guys a band from the late 60's early 70's called Master's Apprentices, I couldnt get this tune outta my head! He went on to have the higher ups from Metal Blade records on the show to talk about all this stuff being re-released soon and how important the late 60's and early 70's were to forming metal and how many other "Black Sabbath's" were around but didnt make it....these guys inparticular are from Australia and they had AC/DC being fans way back when. It was a great show talking about so many of these "Greybeard Metal" bands and how alot of these guys served in 'Nam because of the time brackett....really cool intresting stuff. Flipper - Shine
Fear - Let's Have A War
The Flesh Eaters - Digging My Grave
The wife unit and I spent some time with Ted of Flipper, back in '80 or so, during a visit to see my high school buddy Dave Carothers (drummer for The Mutants). Two years ago The Mutants played a reunion gig with a couple of other bands at the old Fillmore West. Dave asked if they could use some of my art for the "light show". Of course i said YES. They ended up intercutting images of my art with sampled scenes from "Faster Pussycat. Kill! Kill!". That was kinda cool; a Tralfamadorian juxtaposition of my meager scribblings with all those great bands of the past who played on that stage (including, of course The Mutants).

The Mutants were cool. I went to a party in their place over the Wagon Wheel once in '81 or so, while visiting a friend in SF. Some photos I took of Flipper at the Sound of Music were used in the recent reissue of Generic on CD, and I sold one to a German magazine a couple weeks ago.

I'm bringing the Heavy Metal Law into this, and escorting you to the little white room. C:)
You don't know about her, do you?
There aren't many O's out there. I could have done about 40 more M's, but not many O's yet Yoko Ono's stuff qualifies as "hard" music, and I like it.
I don't think the Plastic Ono Band quite knew what to do with what she was doing all the time, but have a listen. Not saying you'll like it, but it's probably not what you think.
(You gotta wait a while and finally a little play button shows up. It doesn't start by itself, or you can download.)

I know about her, she's the thorn that ripped apart the Beatles, man
Yeah, so it's said, but it's not because of Yoko that they never got back together and did anything together. Like anything, it's more than just that.
Which has nothing to do with her music at all.
Wow..been busy, time to play catch up..here is my "M through Q" and I think that catches me back up..

right)
SLAYER-(dont remember the song, it seems that it has a little girl that screams in it)
SLAUGHTER-UP ALL NIGHT,SLEEP ALL DAY
You were close Dr. T....the band is "The Sword" and the song is "How Heavy THIS Axe"...it is not on the new album, but the one right before it. I absolutely love this band, good old school stoner, doom metal with all the medevel and fantasy lyrics. Those guys either played ALOT of D&D or are current World Of Warcraft players...great instrumental to that album too.."The Sundering"...awesome stuff.
The Slayer song you speak of is called "Dead Skin Mask" which is on "Seasons In The Abyss" the girl is screaming "hello Mr. Gein..let me out" and so on...its a song about serial killer Ed Gein.
It would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to pick one Slayer song because after Maiden and Priest I really feel that Slayer is the "realest" band and THEE quintessential heavy metal to span the last few decades. Dual guitar attack, one of the greatest drummers ever..hell even Bostaph was great on a few albums, and a vocalist who you recognize all the time. Controversial, unapplogetic and even the 1 weak Slayer album (Diabolus In Musica...I thought it sucked)..is still better then half the new crap comming out....LONG LIVE SLAYER!!....though, I wish they would sometimes tone down that 3rd Reich garbage at the live shows. Having said all that....

Slayer- The Antichrist
Slayer- Raining Blood

A buddy of mine is supposed to make me a copy of 'Gods of the earth' album.
I'm hooked on them, and I've only heard one song so far.
If a group is good enuff, it just takes one song for me to be hooked.
Like, back in the day, when me and some friends were hanging out, playing darts, and listening to a metal station on the radio.
The DJ announced a new group and played their song, and we all jammed to it, and the very next day, I went to the music store
and bought 'White Zombie'.
The song on the Radio was "Thunderkiss '65".

Well...we've reached the end...of round 1, lets let the others catch up, and if no one does? I say we start over with the rules being you cant mention the same song. I would say dont use the same band, but lets face it O and Q etc are tough...so with exceptions of the tricky letters, all new bands whenever possible.

I think we pretty much scared everyone else off with our lists!! I'll give it a few days...for now I'm gonna post some really interesting metal I have listining to!!
Satanic Warmaster - Vampiric Tyrant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnkM5HOU6-E#normal)
In my very humble opinion this is by far the greatest and purest Black Metal I have heard since the huge Nordic movement in the early 90's.....Satanic Warmaster hails from Finland and is 2 guys. Cold, grim and simplistic...true old school Black Metal Assault...love this song and band had to share with fellow UMA headbangers.
Cool music in a cold dark under produced way. Vocals suck as do many BM bands. Reminds me of Old Man's Child.
No video but I have been CRANKING the hell out of this one several times a week. Really pisses off people yapping on their phones in traffic. chain_saw
Vader - Rise of the undead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dqS-Uknjbc#normal)
Wicked..GREAT post on Vader!!! I had the pleasure of seeing them back in 2000 on the "Black To The Blind" tour..never, EVER in my LIFE was I so so crapping in my pants scared of a mosh pit before...literally it was almost "too much".
I saw them here in Jersey for something called The March Metal Meldown. The played the mainstage in the Asbury Park Convention Center which is a GIANT, brick, old marble, gothicy type place made in the 1920's. The walls are grey brick with green crap on them and they played in front of huge window that over looked the beach...it was f'ing freezing in there and a PERFECT scene for them to play.
I will never forget this: Out comes a giant, and I mean giant Polish flag...guitar feedback is making the place shake and Peter goes in very broken English "Horns up, everyone horns up.....maybe this is last time for your horns, maybe tonight...you die!"...and they BLASTED into the music, the pit exploded and because of that I will never forget seeing that band live..truly a powerhouse.
On a side note, my friends wife is from Poland and a few years ago he went there to visit her grandparents, I had him bring me back Polish copies of Litany and Reign Forever World....check out their covers of Mayhem's Freezing Moon, Destruction's Total Desaster and Judas Priest's Rapid Fire!!
Sorry to be so wordy but man you just brought back a huge metal memory!!!!
I'm a big fan of Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Rise Against, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and Within Temptation! Great bands!
Hey a new face on the metal thread, so which singer do you prefer from Nightwish?
The original:Tara or The new one: Her name escapes my mind at the moment
I actually prefer Annette (I think that's her name). Tarja was good but her voice was a bit too operatic for me. Yourself?

I take Tarja all the way. That is the epitomy of goth metal. Beauty and the beast style vocals. Life and spirirt/death and misery-reality.
I like Tarja as well, her voice is so Haunting, not to mention, it's good D&D music.

Not into D&D myself anymore but I always thought the soundtrack for Conan was great for that.

Yep, I agree, we use Conan:the Barbarian SDTRK, Braveheart SDTRK, Judas Priest:Painkiller, Legend SDTRK, Nightwish, Dio:Magica, and
The Sword.
I played D&D briefly back in junior high. Even after that I used to sometimes buy books and stuff just because I dug the artwork so damn much.
If you want something that might ad to the mood for your D&D'ing...try this. Mortiis: The Stargate. Mortiis is actually the very 1st bass player for Emperor going waaaay back to the Wrath Of The Tyrant days. He split and has done alot of really weird stuff. The Stargate is basically just about an hr of medievel sounding music that was all done electronically. There is a book that came with it about kids in a village with trolls and demons and some crap.
Honestly when I got it I thought I was gonna hear some "blasphemous black metal" and I was like wtf? This sounds like Im at a renesciance fair!!...You might like it...he also dressed up as a troll and looks somewhat ridiculous.
I'll have to check that out, thanks for the info ;D

I've been in my share of mosh pits and done a ton of headbangin. Partial reason my neck has a bad disc in it. It never ceased to amaze me at all the jerkwards and idiots at some of these shows doing stupid stuff. Stage divin , crowd surfing are both dangerous. Then there's the a$$%(*at*)!*& that think a mosh pit gives them an excuse to bust somebody up. It's SUPPOSE to be fun. I remember seeing Anthrax back in like 90'. We were going around in about a 50' circle. This kid maybe 14 goes down in front of me. I scooped him back up on his feet and we kept going. The same show there were these two thugs. Both 6'2" maybe 230. Short blonde hair and white dago tees standing on the sideline. Every so often one of them would either punch or trip one of the moshers. I tried getting my buddy and this big dude who was maybe 6'6" and 260 to go take care of business. Neither wanted anything to do with it. Suddenly there is a melee. The kids got tired of it and maybe 8 or 10 jumped the thugs and beat the crap outta them. Then security comes over and they beat the crap outta them and take them away in cuffs. Everyone cheered and started the pit again. >:D

I agree man, and death metal shows are the WORST...I saw Deicide years ago and caught a fist to the nose that damn near knocked me out, I mean it literally dropped me to my knees and someone picked me up...after that I was like wtf? I'm not here to fight or miss a day of work the next day, I'm here for the damn music...I'll get close to the stage when I go, but I steer pretty clear of the pit nowadays.
Like 6 or so years ago I went to the Misfits "Resurection" concert and it was played at there hometown in Vernon, NJ..it actually got so out of hand with a few people that they stopped playing and Jerry grabbed the mic and said "our families are here, its not a fight, take it easy and have fun..next pit better just be a giant circle with everyone running like the old days". Sure enough it was and that was a great memory! Those old circle/thrash pits were the best...this swinging for peoples faces is just nuts.
