Title: Who’s gonna be the next big movie super star?
Post by: FACTO2 on June 27, 2009, 03:29:40 AM
Okay, within the next ten years, who do you think is going to rise to the level of movie super star.  I'm not talking TV star, I mean movie box office.

Can be anyone.  Someone working in movies.  Someone working in TV.  Just name who you think and why.

I have two choices...

I'm betting on Jeffrey Donovan.  The guy who played Capt. Jones in Changeling.  He's probably better known for Michael Western in Burn Notice.  This guy is good.  Not only a good actor but someone who manages to be likeable in no matter what role he plays.  I have a feeling this guy is going to go above and beyond TV.

Second Choice, Michael C. Hall, Dexter.  Another actor who is capable of everything an actor needs to do but still comes across as so likeable and someone who the general populace can relate to.  Also, Jeff Yagher told me that Hall is one of the nicest guys he's ever worked with.  Good enough for me.

Anyway, I think these two are destined for major stardom.

Who do you think?

hard to say because it doesn't seem to be a priority for HW to find the next big star these daze. the same stars from fifteen years ago are still hanging around. george clooney, brad pitt, johnny depp.... i think part of the problem i personally have with new 'stars' is they all look the same. literally, i can't tell one from the other.

i think megan fox has a great opportunity to make her long-term mark. i see her as a slicker version of kate winslet. comedians i think will be the ones who stay around and by virtue of their longevity are stars more than being great actors (which some of them attempt to do). will ferrell will never be a dramatic actor, lol. there are some apatow comedians that could hang out in the long run.

i dunno. i feel as if the daze of the big movie star are coming to a slow close in terms of opening the door to new thespians. a leonard dicreepio will probably always slip through, but there's not going to be nearly as many harrison fords or mel gibsons out on the horizon. used to be the studio system helped ensure a star remained a star for as long as the public was willing to let them shine. with the way it is today, a 'star' will be born inside a franchise and wither outside of that (there's not exactly a guarantee of a blockbuster starring hugh jackman outside an x-man title). seen a vitto mortgenson (sp) movie lately? i guess i could watch E! for a minute and glean some insight on who's supposed to be the next big thing, but these 'stars' are so ephemeral that it's like why bother learning their name?

i just wish speilberg would stop pushing shia lebouf on us.

Thank goodness Clooney, Pitt and Depp are still hanging around.  They are all good actors and great "stars."  My problem isn't "old" stars hanging around too long.  It's Hollywood constantly rolling out the new superstar of the week.  This week, it's Megan Fox.  Next week, she'll be forgotten in the rush to crown the new superstar.  I would not compare Fox to Winslet.  Kate Winslet is a real actress who has built a career on challenging roles in mostly uncommercial films.  Fox is a starlet with a comedy, two action films and a few years of TV under her tiny belt.

I have to agree with Facto about Micheal Hall he is very talented and Dexter is a great character.  I think Thomas Jane will be a big star as well, with the right role. Too bad he didnt get jonah hex, i think he would be a better choice than Brolin.

Brolin?? are you kidding me? Brolin got Jonah hex, WTF??
The only thing Brolin was ever good in was The Goonies.
Thomas Jane will be on SCIFI tonight at 8pm "Mutant Chronicles"

i should have clarified about winslet and fox. (actually, i wanted to but the screen started acting up on me so i posted before i really wanted to.)

you're absolutely right about winslet doing her thing in uncommercial roles (well, for the most part). she could have stayed mainstream without any problems. instead, she went a more indie route, for good or ill. for that, i think you have to like her supposed artistic merit (though i always argue it's easy to have artistic merit when you're on top of the world. it's funny how so many stars today like to forget how they got to where they are by selling out in the beginning).

fox, though, has a vulnerability and an attitude at the same time, judging by the interviews i've read. i can only think of jessica alba rivalling her beauty, but where alba is sugar sweet, fox has an edge about her that her peers are seemingly afraid to broach. in other words, i get a sense that she's more honest than most starlets, and that's what sets her apart, what will continue to land her work when her peers are footnotes at best.

for this honesty and vulnerability, fox will want to stretch out and do some more challenging projects. and why not? she has the stigma of beauty and commercial success to overcome. at first i wanted to compare her to nicole kidman, but kidman, i believe, was always about the commercial success more than being a great actress. there's really  nowhere for fox to go to, she's at the top. like winslet, there's only one direction, and that's down. fox isn't likely going to match 'transformers' commercially, and neither will winslet. so what's left other than to prove that you deserve to be considered a serious actress?

yeah Brolin got jonah hex.  filming right now. I think he got it based on his role in no country for old men  which was good. i dont see him as Hex, but there you go.

(continued. why is this board limiting how many words i can use? lol.)

winslet built her career? no one had ever heard of her before 'titanic,' no? her career was instant. nah, i'd say she built her *reputation* on those subsequent roles. in respect that both have amazing, once in a lifetime success so early, i think they have a lot in common. i hope i'm right in thinking that fox's honesty will keep her from becoming another nicole kidman (why do producers even hire this woman? has she *ever* been in a successful movie? lol. i can't recall a single movie save 'the others' that was very good. oh, wait, she was in 'cold mountain,' that was pretty good, and another where she was a murderous weathergirl or some such.)

comparing fox to other no-name starlets isn't fair, i think. she's not a no name already, if that makes any sense. she'll be around for awhile, but she's got to decide what *kind* of actress she's going to be, and i think she'll capitalize on her fame for the short-term, then do some more work on the smaller, more 'important' stuff as time goes by (and inbetween major roles). and let's be honest, winslet's name is hardly bandied about much these daze when she's not talking about her weight. so while she's a great actress, i don't see her star exactly shining bright in major releases not co-starring dicreepio. and to be even more honest, she's not exactly avoided movies without commercial appeal, either. don't get me wrong, i love winslet, but let's not kid each other into thinking she'd turn down a plum role in a blockbuster out of artistic merit given the chance, either. unless, of course, 'real' actresses are above mere entertainment, then i guess she wouldn't.

will fox fade away after 'transformers'? i see no reason why that would happen when already rumours abound about her taking over the 'tomb raider' role. that doesn't sound like a starlet who's about to exit stage left into obscurity to me. :)

Talk about BIG.  Anyone who suffers from a sleep disorder will feel jarred by the passing of this late night embodiment of Bluto:

(OK, maybe not such a big star.)
