Do any of you have pics that are better than what we already have at our Gallery? If so, please feel free to contribute them here.
Simply insert your better looking pic within a post right here at this thread. After you have done so, one of the mods will "right click save as" and move it into the Gallery.
BTW, Gallery uploading permissions have been restricted to the mods only. This was done as preventative measure in keeping the Gallery clean and organized. The old UMA Yahoo photos section ended up being littered with stray and repetitive pics thereby making for somewhat of a pixel landfill. We didn't want this to happen here. I hope everyone understands.
A few tips to make a better pic:
If it's flat and you've got a scanner and it's no bigger than you're scanner . . . scan it!
Photos:
Shoot subject against a plain (busy patterns make edges harder to see) contrasting background. (Dark subject - light bkgnd. Light subject - dark bkgnd.)
When shooting large flat objects (like a game board), lay object on floor or table and hold the camera perpendicular to the surface.
Make sure subject is well lit. Use fill light to reduce shadows. Try to avoid "hot spots" (light reflecting on shiny objects)
Shoot subject at "eye level" for less distortion. A straight on shot of the front and back (for toys and other 3D objects), is most desirable.
And most important of all . . . FOCUS! :D
Brace the camera if you notice any distortion in the images you take. Even the slightest, almost imperceptible movements can make your picture less crisp.
Side shots of figures are also desirable.

Yes, if you're using a digicam, might as well take as many angles as you want. They may not all get used, but we'll have a variety to choose from.
OK I guess I'll start it off..

*Love* all those graphics!! Even the ones that ripped off Jimmy Bama! Great 60's style artwork.
Mike
Thanks Tom! I got a nice big Frank puzzle from one of your pics! Most of the puzzle box pics had one or more corners cut off, though.

Thanks Richard! Those are great! Scanning is always preferable, when possible (i.e. flat things). It's never out of focus and never has light reflections (unless there's some wrinkled shrink wrap on it).
The Jamar box sides are no big deal, because it's just the same graphics that are on the front. I also don't think it's necessary to put up pics of every size, as they are all pretty much the same. Just list all the sizes in the pic's description. I think there were just 3 sizes in the boxes (10x14, 15x20 and 17x22) and the frame tray puzzle.
My thanks, too, Richard!
Scanning is preferable for another reason: no keystoning. That's when you take a photo of something flat but the angle of your camera isn't exactly parallel with the item. Result: an image with one side larger than the other. It's like projecting a movie onto a screen with the screen tilted somewhat sideways-- the image shape is gonna be off.
Whoa! Didn't see you there!
HELLO, Max my drunken severed head friend!!!!!!
GREAT photos! Wow!
"Fun for Tiny Tots"? ? Boy, times have changed! Today, you sure couldn't market to toddlers a puzzle that had a guy strapped to a table, blood pouring out of his head, with a syringe next to it.
God bless the parents of Boomer and Gen-X Monster Kids, who gave us such lovely gruesome stuff!
Good point, Mr. Besotted Noggin!
It is really strange!..."fun for tiny tots". What kind of company would market this to an innocent child? And what kind of terrible parent would purchase this for their kid?
Ahem....
Actually, if I would have been given MORE monster toys as a wee lad, I would be a much better citizen and could be doing something useful with my life instead of searching out all the monster toys I don't have yet! If only my folks would have known...they could have saved me countless hours, dollars, and frustrations in the future!!! LOL!!! ;D
The 3 tray set, as pictured IS how I bought it. Did someone replace Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Pluto Pup with these 3 monster puzzles? Don't know as I'm not the original owner. Stranger things have been marketed but it does seem really odd..."for little fingers"..."for tiny tots"
As I said, this is an "odd duck"
Monster hugs, Max!!!
Richard
No I don't mind one bit Richard. Your boxes are much better then mine so they should use yours.
If anyone has better shots of the Mystery game please post them too.

I think the boxes were a bit different (more of the puzzle image was shown, layout, box color, etc) but you are right...it's the same puzzle image.
Well, we've got variations of other things, so why not these? I might do one big picture that best shows the art and one other pic that shows the variation.

Thank you, Zombophoto!!!
I wish I had better quality on the Jaymar puzzles. Passed up some pretty minty puzzles over time...what was I thinking? Should've, could've, would've... but am thankful for what I have.
You mentioned (on the "Big Frankie" postings) seeing my Dodge Chargers on my web site...and there's a similar story here.
I am thankful for the opportunity to have owned the Chargers I did. But I passed up buying a beautiful red 1967 Charger with a 426ci hemi as I thought the asking price of something like $1,500 was a bit much (the year 1972). I had a chance on a damaged 1969 Charger Daytona (like the Plymouth Superbird) and passed on that too. As my mother used to say, "Too smart, too late!"
I am going to try to get a picture of another couple of Jaymar variations that I have. The pieces are thick and have a yellow frame around 3 sides but don't appear to have come from a tray. Or maybe they did, who knows? I will post pics when I can.
Best,
Richard
Looking forward to them!!

Well, I did a lot of Photoshop on the Mummy game, just to sorta neaten it up some. To me, it's the graphics on the game that are the important part.
I took another run at the box bottom and added the top side panel and game cards.

I do, but it's buried beneath a ton of other Wolf Man stuff. Just trying to get at the game would mean dismantling my Wolf Man display. Anyone else have one more readily available?
Used Tom's Frank game to make this pic. Didn't have any place to put some of the cards without covering up the cool graphics. In the middle is the end panel of the box lid (not to scale) that I thought looked more interesting than the side.

Mike,
I tried taking pics of the Hasbro games but got way too much camera flash. I'm going to try to re-take on my next day off so I have some sunlight .
In the meantime, here are the Binders and 2 paint-by-numbers. The binders should be OK...if one trys to take a pic of them directly on, there is too much camera flash. But I took the pics at an angle so they turned out nice. With the paint by numbers...hmm, I might try those again with sunlight.

Yeh, but everybody knows what a box looks like. I always prefer the scanner view of flat things (like a box front).
Hmmmmm... I think maybe we ought to leave the images as photos of the items and not just flat images of the artwork. I think this is what Shannon was saying (although I could be wrong). What does everyone else think?

Why would you want to look at a distorted view of the art if you didn't have to? If you had some trading cards, or something, would you scan them, or stand them up at an angle and photograph them?

Hi Mike,
I just got home from work...
Here are the exact measurements...
Width: 14.25 inches
Length: 20 inches
More pictures to come as I can take them.
I'm disgusted with my camera. It's a Canon EOS digital Rebel XT and I think it should take much better pictures than it does (I had a Rebel film camera before and was very, very happy with that). That's why I'm waiting for sunlight (daytime) to try some pictures. I want to see if the color balance and clarity are any better. And I hate all the camera flash I'm getting!
So, more to come.
Best,
Richard

Why would you want to look at a distorted view of the art if you didn't have to? If you had some trading cards, or something, would you scan them, or stand them up at an angle and photograph them?
- Because I want to see the complete object, and not just the artwork. The toy or puzzle or whatever is a three dimensional object and often the beauty of the item is not just the art on the front but the entire package. Of course if we're talking trading cards you would just scan them. Any flat object such as trading cards, post cards, magazines, movie stills etc. would obviously be better scanned, that's just a ridiculous question.
I would have no problem with the gallery containing images of the item photographed and then also containing images of the artwork cleaned up and presented separately. The artwork on these items is definitely part of their appeal, but I just think only presenting them as flat art removes them too much from what they are (and why we like them) to begin with.
Also, these galleries are used as a reference guide for a lot of people and the item should be represented accurately.
Once again, I ask for others opinions on this subject.
Sure a good flat scan would be perfect but a lot of people don't have scanners so they can only take digital pics. My scanner is not working right so I can only provide D pics myself. Does it bother me if the posted images are not perfect straight on scanned pics ? No not at all. I think asking for only the best scanned images might be cutting off your own foot "so to speak" because people will not take the time to take or scan the pics and keep posting images if they are not used. I say use them and if you get a better image down the road just replace it with the better image.
I would rather see more views of the item in maybe a sub gallery with a complete view of the object myself "Top , bottom, opened box ,playing pieces ,so on and so forth. I really want to see what is inside the box too :)

That would be nice, but since we have to pay to have pics here, we may have to hold it down to just the most interesting views. A box side that just repeats the same graphics from the box front isn't that much more interesting.

My thoughts are almost exactly in line with Zombophoto's. The entire thing as an object is the total appeal. I even like other object object visible for size referencing sometimes. A flattened image might as well be a poster, and is just that much easier to duplicate. The object itself in a museum like display, such as in all our cases is much more interesting and 'real' to me.

That's because it
is real. When you look at a real object your brain compensates and the object doesn't look distorted. A distorted photo is
not more realistic. The real box does not have one side that is twice as tall as the other.

What I'm trying to articulate is, given the choice between a museum or auction catalog, with all the items photographed as objects, vs. a compendium of the graphics used on those objects, I'd choose the museum presentation hands down. Mind you, I'd like both, but one is of far greater interest and value to me as an aficionado and as a reference. That experience, for me, is the difference between having the UMA toy tour being cabinets full of cool objects as opposed to a binder full color corrected print-outs.
Also, a number of people, myself included, aren't to into having their photos or collections co-opted uncredited. There's a long history in the collecting communities of the inclusion of a "courtesy of..." or "From the collection.." that the internet makes difficult. Presenting items in the context of the collection helps to cut that down. I was rather disappointed to literally see photos I took of some of the things I own show up in the under researched Tomart's Horror books, to the point that I stopped posting photos for almost two years. Now that images are easier to attain and it is less likely someone can turn a buck off of it, I'm more into sharing them but wary of it when I see elements added digitally that are untrue of the actual object.

Well, as I wrote, I'm interested in it for scale
For scale, you put in the description that it is 10x14, or 12" tall, etc. If you put another object in the photo, for scale, how will we know how large
that object is? Unless you're talkin' Coke can, or something.

That would be fine, if we had a professional photographer taking the pictures, but I'd rather see a scan (where possible) that's in focus, with no light reflection or uneven color, than a photo with all those things.

We'll be happy to add credits to all photos. If I forget, just remind me.
If it's only about a perfectly cleaned up image, then why do any of us even bother to collect these things? Why don't we all just print out perfect images of these items and keep them in a binder on the shelf? I know it sure would save me a lot of room.
I'm sorry Mike but I'm tired of arguing this point with you. Obviously you are not going to budge on this issue and are going to do things however you want so I see no need in discussing this any further.
I strongly think that the gallery is going to suffer as a reference guide because of this.
I prefer photos of the items myself, scans are cool for repo-ing etc..but not archiving.
Here is an idea..how about both.
Here's a correction and some pics for the 1960s Mummy Toy Gallery...
The gumball charm found at http://universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=918 (http://universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=918) is not the Mummy (I always considered this charm to be some weird "Voodoo Zombie" with a little Phantom of the Opera thrown in the design).
Here's the real Mummy Pencil Topper:
As you can see, this is clearly Kharis! And here is his larger Finger Puppet counterpart:
Both are molded in black plastic and hand painted, with the Finger Puppet being a darker shade of purple. Only markings are "Hong Kong".
Richard and I have been trying to determine a year for these but there's so many variations (there's silver & gold plated black plastic versions, etc.), it's proving difficult. My theory is that the charms were made for years and years in different variations/materials, starting with the black plastic painted versions in the 1960s and then going to the unpainted different brightly colored plastic and rubber versions when hand-painting was no longer cost-effective (even for a Hong Kong sweat shop!)
I mean, think about it - that's quite a bit of handwork for a 1 cent item!
As of now, the only ones Richard and I can safely say are bonafide 60s vintage are the painted black plastic versions - not only because those are the ones always seen attached to the vintage header card examples (I've never seen a 60s header card with the erasers, etc.), but mainly because we both remember buying them in our 60s childhood!
Enjoy, and if anyone has additional info on dating these charms, please post!

Wow! Those are the best photos of the 60s charms/toppers/erasers and finger puppets I've ever seen! Got any more?
I agree that other thing isn't a Mummy. A Phantom, at best.
This Mummy/Phantom/"thing" charm is supposed to be a Maori Head, a mummified, tattoed human head from 1800s New Zealand, sort of a cousin to a shrunken head.
Here is Horatio Robley, and his world-class collection of Maori Heads...

Sweet!
Now that's a header card!
Sorry, couldn't resist - and thanx Monster Bob for the info on the Maori Head charm! I've wondered about that character since I was a kid...
That 1st head looks like it had belonged to a white man???

LOL! It would save us all a lot of money too! Listen guys. I hear what your saying. A scan many times removes the three dimensional qualities from an item. I think what I'm after is the best looking picture available that best and most accurately represents the item. If this happens to be a scan, then so be it. But really, how many collectibles can even be scanned unless it's a card or a paper item? I guess, I'm not getting it. What is being questioned here? If a picture comes by scan, digital camera, or even by slow boat from China .. what difference does it make? Sometimes, we're lucky to even have a picture of the item at all yet alone making personal preferences a requirement. Tomland Wolf Man? Hell, just having a pic of that figure is a treasure all by itself. And yes, photoshop should be kept at a minimum. Never to remove blemishes unless clearly stated in the picture's description. And of course, with credit being given to the item's owner whenever possible.
My problem here was not with scanned items but with taking photos of an item, say the Mummy Mystery board game, and then photoshopping them to death to make the image "perfect" but for lack of a better word, flat. You no longer had a photo of the item but just of the artwork cover. I'm also against photoshopping out price tags or other "imperfections" or adding to the image such as the border on that Jaymar puzzle which then changed the actual item. I just don't understand the idea of "cleaning up" the item. It's the same as how I don't like when they photoshop out all folds and tears on movie posters in book collections of them. These items be they posters, toys or whatever have led a life of there own and show the wear and tear that goes along with that life. I for one like to see that life in the representation of that item.

Ah and once again I'm reminded why I stopped posting on this topic.
I might be convinced that people like worn and torn collectibles more, if the mint condition ones didn't always sell for much more than the abused examples.
Come now. I think it's obvious what Shawn has been talking about here. He is pointing out the characteristics that are inherent with any vintage collectible. These are characteristics that lend themselves to the vintage elements of any collectible. And I would agree that like the collectible itself, restoration on pictures should be used with careful consideration and restraint. I don't view these blemishes as flaws as much as I look upon them as pockmarks of history. Cosmetic surgery on anything should always be kept a minimum unless done with upfront explanations on doing so. Pictures included.
OK. I won't mess with any more pictures.
I'm not entirely sure these belong here, but I thought I would share:

Welcome Ghostlab! Nice photos, and thank you for posting them. What are they from? And from what era?
I dont think this toy is pictured anywhere on the site. Its all original and working condition. I did paint over the partially painted childs paint job when I got the toy a couple of weeks ago. I purposely painted it to look like a toy as opposed to trying to model it to much.I didnt try to sand seems, fill gaps, or paint it too painterly etc as it's a toy not model. Its the Topper Motorized Monster Maker Werewolf from the 60's. I'll post pics of the Topper Ogre after I repaint that one. Question: To my mind, repainting a toy leaving in the faults on a toy that was meant to be built and painted by a kid (despite it not being a paint job from the 60's) doesnt ruin the value. Any opinions on that??

These are cool, jerod! I wish I knew how to do photo stuff like that, I would make sooo many pictures to frame up and hang around my house :) Blade is one of my favorite characters, and Wesley Snipes is iconic to me. I could watch the original every day! The other 2, not so much. I love the idea of Lugosi and Snipes together in the picture. I never would have thought of that. It's such an interesting composition and it makes you think about the differences in vampire characters. The only time my mind ever wandered into this kind of territory, was when I was watching True Blood (I don't even know why I watch it- I don't really like the show) and I started imagining how funny it would be if one of those overly dramatic True Blood vampires turned into a bat and flew away from a bog fight scene. The show would not have dragged on for 45 more minutes!

So what did the back of the Munster House actually look like? I decided to try my hand on what it could look like. In the first season's "Low Calorie Munster", there is a round attic window, similar to the one used in the Bates House from Psycho, and the Simmons Mansion from the "Ghost and Mr. Chicken". Since this window does not appear on the visible sides of the house, it would have been on the reverse. I also assumed the Gambrel roof would have continued to the back, and the Mansard roof might have also been continued onto the rear of the house. Typical of many 19th Century homes, I decided 1313 Mockingbird lane may have had a one story shed addition to the rear, which would have been useful for the icebox and laundry. Since many Victorian homes had a simpler acrhitectural treatment on the rear of the structure, I kept the architectural treatment simple.

It's interesting to me, that the drawing of the house seen on the title, where the words "The Addams Family" flashed on the screen, appears to be a lot more run down and spooky, then the painting used of the house as the episode opened. In this case, I edited out the letters, for a better look at the spookier house.

That's a Charles Addams drawing.
It certainly is. Charles Addams based his drawing on an actual house on Adams Blvd. in Los Angeles, used to film the pilot. He changed the roofline look of the house, and a few other details, to give that house a look more in keeping with the style of the house from the New Yorker carttons. I simply edited out the letters, to get a better look at the Charles Addams redesign. When they did a painting of the Charles Addams reimagining of the actual house, seen in each episode opening.they made the house look less run down.

My interpretation of the Pterodactyl encounter from Universal's LAND UNKNOWN.

my 8th painting, and my first horror one, a tribute to the poster Gary Pullin made for Texas Fightmare Weekend, when i first saw his image I knew I wanted to do something like it, it brought two of my favorite horror movies together.
So here is my re-creation of his design. it's a 16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas there is a bit of a shin in this picture, you can see the blood better in person i find as well.

hey I got an image to contribute. the first is a drawing I did at work on a co-workers board.
It is a wish trip to West Virginia 2013, hopefully for the Mothman Festival. that is Mothman swooping down on our car as we drive thru the mountains of WV. You can see a cryptid Hominid below by the river terrorizing some canoe boys.
thought I would throw in a tiny Jersey devil.
the other pic is of a collection of Japanese kaiju figures. Mothman and Flatwoods monsters all around. and a shot of some UFO alien buddies hanging out with some hairy hominids.
taken some time to amass this collection, oh and some money. those things aren't cheep and unfortunately do not show up on ebay, best to hunt for on shops that deal in japanese import vinyl toys.
rotofuji in chicago, shopfoe dot com on the east coast.....

Dr. Cyclops, about your picture. Is this supposed to be Gollum looking for the ring that he lost, but was found by Bilbo Baggins?
By the way, thaks for posting this. I had done some work, regarding animating lightning, and I hope to try this out.
