MODERATOR'S NOTE: I've modified some of these posts that did not include pics by adding pics (when I could) to help everyone visualize what cover you're talking about. If I get the wrong cover or you want the image removed (for some unknown reason) let me know and I'll remove it. Rob (monsterphile)
Here's mine...

I think it's #9 - the first Gogos cover with the Vincent Price portrait...love that one.

Wow, that's hard! Just one? #82 HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS cover. Aside from being a die-hard DS fan, I feel it's a very dynamic cover, graphic & colorful, just grabs you!
After that, probably any Basil Gogos, Ken Kelly or Ron Cobb cover.......& FM #1! Like potato chips, hard to stop at 1!

The first ones that come to mind:
Ingrid Pitt from Vampire Lovers #122 (Who can resist hot, sexy vampire women!)
Wolf Man #99 (one of the best paintings of the Wolf Man, with a House of Frankenstein byline)
Dracula # 30 (Powers of Dracula headline just sounds cool)

I love the Gorgo cover by Gogos.
My favorite is the cover of the first FM I owned, FM 102, with the Lon Chaney Phantom cover.

(Glad you are going to add pics, Rob, because I can't remember the issue number on one of my selections, and I loaned out my Gogos art book and my FM list to a friend, and I could not find it on line... )
My number one favorite for the artistry is #56, the Karloff memorial issue, with the elegant, haunting and touching oil portrait of Karloff in Frankenstein monster make-up, by Basil Gogos. I think Gogos captured so much in that painting-- the pain Karloff's suffered enduring the make-up and costume (that made him a star), the pathos of the Creature, the strength and dignitiy of the actor, and the grief that fans felt at his passing. That cover is, to me, one of the most emotional pieces ever produced.
A runner up though is a quirky one-- it's a very impressionist-looking Frankenstein monster (green face on a white background), also by Gogos. (An unusually simple cover.) It's almost a bit shocking, it's so brief and raw.

For sentimental favorite... #117, a Ken Kelly rendering of the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad-- which was my first FM. :) (It was a real treat to meet him at Wonderfest.) I think this cover is like a snapshot of the movie, and captures so much of the joy of the world of Harryhausen.

for you Elizabeth.
Thank you, Dr. G!
Beautiful!
That Karloff cover never fails to stop me in my tracks. And only Basil Gogos would capture a moment of sadness so eloquently, but bathe it in a warm, orange background like that... an affirmation to the legacy that will live on!
And you just can't beat a Harryhausen skeleton for action/adventure in my book. They are the best. I think Kelly's covers were like capturing frames from the movies. :)
Thanks for the pics of these great covers. Makes me want to pick up some more FM!
Never seen the skeleton warrior one, definitely looking for that one now as well as the Dark Shadows one.
I forgot:
Fear Book 1970 with a great pic of Lugosi on the cover. (sorry no pics)
I have to go with #56 too. Love Karloff and 56 has alwaysa been my lucky number. I was born in '56... 1956, not 1856!
Overall, I like the cover of #19, 1962. Great painting of Lorre, Rathbone and Price, as that issue featured Corman's "Tales of Terror". For sentimental reasons, I like #54, 1969. Invasion of the Saucermen cover. It was the first issue that I remember actually buying myself, I was about 8 years old.

Thank you for posting my favorite cover. Unless I'm mistaken, Basil claimed that this was his only FM cover rendered in oils. He wanted to do something very special for Boris' tribute issue.

#59 is my favorite and got Gogos to sign it when he was at Wonderfest. Also bought the same print.
Great choice, Harry! Always loved that particular Basil painting.
I hope I get to meet the man some day...

I like the look of this one, too. If I were a bigger DS fan, I would have gotten this print. The colors really pop out against the red background.
Great thread, ICEMANN. Thanks for creating it.
I wasn't thrilled w/the later covers, like #170 & 184 back in the day, but now they look pretty good!

I would normally say #56 Frankenstein but looking at all of these together (not to mention some of the other covers posted) it really is a hard choice. #58 The Mummy is just incredible all those nooks and crannies in the face!! Then you look at #99 with that detail in the hair, the same with #62 Mr. Hyde just incredible attention to detail. I guess what I'm saying is any Gogo's cover shares the #1 spot on my list!!!
Follow this link: http://moviemags.com Select "monsters" under genre, then click Famous Monsters and it brings you to a nice gallery of covers.
These are my two favorite covers. Although Gogos is by far my favorite overall FM artist, I've always loved the cover of #94 by Sanjulian.
Some nice covers to be sure but C'mon. THIS is THE cover
(http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp47/WickedLester666/fmof042.jpg)
It never happened but could you imagine an 8 min long (ala the modern action films) battle between these 2 just snarling and beating the crap out of each other. Biting ,tree stumps tossed, chases thru the woods stalking each other, MOns-teers droool. Yea thats what ahs talkin about.
Hey WL, I've always admired that cover too. It's one of those that made a bigger impression than the film itself. (Don't get me wrong, Frankenstein meets the Wolfman rocks!)
#103, for sure, that beautiful Gogos of the Lagoon Creature. It just says "dive into a world of monsters!" for me. I love A LOT of the covers. But that one is my fave...plus, we also got to see it as puzzle, and as one of those glow-in-the-dark Alpha Bits posters, and maybe as some other stuff. That painting got around!

Wow!! I didn't know Kerry Gammill was in the house!! I have enjoyed your work since the Marvel days. I think I saw some spot illos you did in one of Marvel's monster mags back in the day. Your Gogos book was phenomenal as well.
As much as I love Basil's work, Sanjulian is awesome! I took that very same Famous Monsters all the way to Seattle to have him sign it last year. He didn't have a translator, but I was able to shake his hand and tell him what I thought of his work. Nice man.
