Title: Your fave Non horror Non superhero comics.
Post by: Wicked Lester on May 31, 2009, 08:07:11 PM
Tho the horror stuff is #1 for me a close 2nd are the 40s 50s crime comics. Crime Patrol, War Against Crime , Crime Suspestories , Crime Does not Pay , Public Enemies etc etc. I also have issue 1 and 2 of Skywalds Crime Machine from the 70s. Got em off Feebay about a year ago. Someone must have been sleeping cuz I got em at about 1/2 of what they are worth. I also , and you may want to hang onto your seats here, enjoy the 50s Little Lulu comics. I think that these are just plain fun are well written and everyone in the family from dad to the little kids can get a kick out of these.
Also into the early Disney reprints. Mickey and the seven Ghosts is one of the better ones. Also enjoy Ducktales.
Right now, well not at this moment but today I read another 3 stories in the Showcase Presents Jonah Hex. $12 for a 500 page reprint of 70s DC western stuff is a thumbs up in my book. About 80 of the last pages are dedicated to Outlaw/Billy the Kid. GREAT buy. Every once in a blue moon I'l break out my underground stuff. Gotta love that R. Crumb. I'm reading American Splendor with Harvey Pekar during lunch time at work

I love vintage comics & comic strips. I'm partial to:
Dick Tracy
Peanuts
Dennis the Menace ("Hey Dad! Wake up & see how you look in a crew haircut!")
and...does MAD count?

Right now two of the best comics IMO are:

- Criminal by Brubaker and Phillips. This book is a collection of some straight street stories, definetely influenced by the 40's/50's/60's pulp writers. Whats also cool about it, is every issue has a separate pulp story written (a couple pages, no art) and the creators write essays on their favorite pulp writers. characters and stories.

Lester, check out this title, being a fan of 40's/50's pulp, you may enjoy it.

- Unknown Soldier by Dysart/Ponticelli on the Vertigo label. Well researched writing, great art all add to a reboot of DC's iconic character. Set in 2002 during the Ugandan civil war. Raw reading for a comic, clearly powerful stuff.

I dig all the stuff mentioned in the first two posts.  The EC Crime comics are a particular favorite -- the Johnny Craig stories especially.  Ed Robbins' MIke Hammer comic strip is a knockout! The war/adventure EC titles are great, too. I love Kurtzman's Mad, Eisner's Spirit -- and John Stanley's Little Lulu comics are a great fun read!  Marge's original Lulu panel cartoons are wonderful, too.

Vintage newspaper strips are my favorite thing.  I'm so grateful we're getting quality book collections of them now.  Segar's Popeye, Caniff's Terry and the Pirates, Gould's Dick Tracy and Hal Foster's Prince Valiant are top of my list.  I'm also loving the early volumes of Peanuts and Dennis the Menace -- wonderful cartooning!  Al Capp's Li'l Abner and Roy Crane's Capt. Easy are also favorites. I'm really looking forward to  the upcoming Rip Kirby collection by Alex Raymond.  Hope someone will do the same book treatment for Frank Robbins' Johnny Hazzard.  Frank Godwin's Rusty Riley, too.

I like a good Western comic -- anything drawn by Everett R. Kinstler , Jack Davis, John Severin or Wm. Overgard.  I wish there were a big book of Jose Luis Salina's CIsco Kid comic strip.  And I'll take anything in any genre drawn by Jack Kirby.

I like a lot of the underground comics -- the early Warren mag comics (and the later period with lots of Bruce Jones, Rich Corben, Russ Heath, Alex Toth, Frank Thorne  and John Severin).  Joe Kubert's adaptations of the Tarzan novels still thrill me.  I like Lynda Barry's comics -- crude art, but great writing.

Favorites from overseas: Lone Wolf and Cub, Tintin, Garth, Modesty Blaise, Corto Maltese , Blake & Mortimer -- anything by Serge Clerc, Yves Chaland,  Joost Swarte, Jordi Bernet -- this list could go on a lot longer, but I have work to do!!!

I grew up on the Tarzan comics as well Terry, first the Gold key then the later DC versions.  I always enjoyed the Richard Corben 'Den' series in Heavy Metal magazine, as well as Moebius'  and Alex Nino's artwork.  There were some really fantastic stories to be found in Heavy Metal.

Agreed but lately I've been going back and browsing through back issues and old TPB's.  I plan on picking up G.I. Joe Classics Vol 1 this week...

Two great story arcs that I have been skimming around in need mention...#1 The Infinity Gauntlet. Which was in my opinion one of the greatest stories in all of Marvel U. I think that may have been the 1st really big arc that effected almost everyone in the Marvel U. Secret Wars may have come 1st, but Gauntlet was "bigger". Over 15 years old and were still seeing statues and action figures made of Thanos, Lady Death and Adam Warlock because of this. I could read this over and over...and I do...which brings me to...

2. If you are a Star Wars fan in the least bit, and can get into the expanded universe, you dont need to know much to enjoy this one, but I highly recomend Star Wars: The Crimson Empire...a GREAT story of loyalty that takes off right from Return Of The Jedi. It focuses on the Empire (whats left of it) and mainly on two Crimson Guardsmen, thats all I'll say.

After you read that..you'll know why the Emperor had 2 of those dudes in his chambers at all times....bad(*at*)**!!!! (Another comic that I always leave near by!)

I've fallen in love with John Stanley's Little Lulu over the past couple years. Read a few, but discovered the library had a lot of the Dark Horse books in the kid's section.

Anything by Eisner, Kim Deitch, Dan Clowes, Los Bros Hernandez. 60s horror comics from Warren, Dell and Gold Key. Been thinking about pulling out by box of undergrounds to see how they hold up.

Yep,see, another Lulu fan. Just plain fun. Same goes for the Carl Barks Duck stuff.
As for Undergrounds I am still reading American Splendor everyday at lunch. Big fan of R.Crumb(genius) which inspired me to draw undergrounds myself back in the day. Never had anything published but people over the years that I showed em to thought they were great.
Some titles I used to collect were Zap , Mr Natural , Slow Death ,Insect Fear,Binky Brown and the stuff with the cute fuzzy animals being all bad and depraved.

WL,
Yeah, i'm a big fan of the underground comics myself...i recently located my old stash of them tucked away [from the prying eyes of my kids while growing up] in my attic. I brought 'em all down and bagged 'em, giving them the respect they deserve. R Crumb has always been high on my list of Faves along w/ Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson and Rick Griffin. I used to get'em from Krupp's Mail order back in the day. All wonderfully depraved stuff! Who can forget Tommy Toilet [still have that poster] Wildman Sam, Mr, Natural, etc... I was delighted to find ALL my Zap comics in the stack, in decent shape and even the forbidden 3 issues of Snatch...better stop here don't wanna get banned! Keep the Underground flame burning, my friend!

So did I... I'd be sweating as I signed the certifcation that I was over 18 (since I was in 9th grade). My goal was to be published in an underground before I was able to by them.

I have all the underground 'Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' comics from Rip-Off Press.  Definitely not something you want your kids reading, but these were hilarious back when I was a teen.  R.Crumb was also a bit hit for me back in the `70's.  I never knew about the age thing, as these were given to me by the neighbor as he was finished with them.

Yes, I love the Atlas westerns. They were so gritty compared with most of the product on the newstands at the time. Moreover, they usually featured Joe Maneely cover art.

These jungle comics with Maurice Whitman cover art are also among my favourites from the early fifties:

I really liked Bone. It was like a modern day adventure story, with old school sensibilities and style.

The Crow
Sin City
V for Vendetta
The Goon (Not sure if that counts as horror since he fights monsters, but it's a very funny comic.)

While I've not yet gotten heavily into collecting most Disney comics, I do have nearly half of the fourteen Dell Goofy issues in my collection!

Classic Harvey comic books. Hot Stuff

Before the age of nine or so the comics that I reached for most often (and purchased once in a blue moon) from the spinner rank were Harvey. Casper and the other Harvey characters just seemed more exotic to me than the characters in the competing Dell ciomics. Even then I was drawn to spooks, witches and demons! Hot Stuff was a particular favourite of mine at the time:

These days I'm really put off by the fact that the diaper Hot Stuff wears indicates that he's a baby so I have very few Hot Stuff comics in my collection.

My favourite Harvey character these days is Spooky because unlike Casper he's not a milquetoast and I really like his derby. Here are scans of a few of my older (defined as ten cent) Spooky comics:

A derby s a diaper every time in my book!

I also really like Wendy since I know she grew up to be super hot:

Here are scans of some of my older Wendy comics:

I do keep an eye out for any older Casper comics which I'm willing to buy if they're cheap. Here are scans of a few from my collection:

Richie Rich though turns my stomach. Nor can I abide the grotesquely fat Little Lotta or the diaper wearing Baby Huey characters.

Huh!? What's Marvin the Martian doing on the same cover with the Great Gazoo and the Flintstones? Marvin is a Looney Tunes property while the latter are products of Hanna-Barbera Productions.

???

P.S.: I see now that the comic was Disapproved by the CCA. It must therefore be a parody produced by an independent.

;D
