Title: What horror or sci-fi film bothered/disturbed you as an adult?
Post by: BlackLagoon on May 09, 2009, 02:14:41 PM
I didnt see Texas Chainsaw Massacre until my early 20's and I have to say the scene when  they (the "family") were holding down the girl who eventually got away really struck a nerve. The rest of the movie was gorey and dirty looking and just really crazy I thought, but it was that scene that got me.

Here is why. I dont like the idea of humilation and being overpowered. While the girl was screaming in terror the fact that they were laughing at her drove me crazy. I cannot stress enough the anger I felt over a fictional scenario in a fictional movie. I dont like anyone being held down, forced against their will or laughed out due to their helplessness. Having said that, I do not own this movie. Being about 22 years old, obsessed with weight lifting and on a testosterone trip I couldnt help but think "Man..I wish you would try that on me, I'd take away that saw and hammer and stick it right up...". Of course this was fear and discomfort comming through.

I had posted a what UMA'ers thought about Hostel 1&2 which are both films I own oddly. Mike C. I believe replied with something along the lines of these perhaps being tales of revenge and vengence. Now I know why I own these movies. Had both films not had the revenege sequence, the role reverseal etc. I can guarentee you I would not give these films the time of day. I cant even tell you the last time I viewed these discs, but unlike TCM which is NOT on my shelf due to the lack of "revenge". Hostel sits there, unwatched (in recent times) and also nonthreatening due to the fact that the killers get theirs.

The lesson I learned many years and movies later? Nothing will entertain me quite like the classics.

"The Devil's Rejects"
"Texas Chainsaw massacre"
"Hostel"

They only bother me, cause there are sick twisted people out there, who do this.

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is based on the life of Ed Gein, a sick twisted person.

As for it's only a movie, "The Ring" gave me nightmares for a couple of days, the little girl wouldnt leave me alone.
Of course I have watched Horror movies all my life, and love them, and sometimes they still give me nightmares, but
I dont mind.

There's a handful of movies that really upset me as an adult.
Most of my friends make fun of me for being a pansy but I stand behind my... uh, dislike?

One of them was Last House On The Left (1972).

I did not like that movie either, it bothered me throughout the whole movie.
I will not be watching the remake.

The one movie that truly frightened me as an adult was the BBC production of The Woman In Black. This is a chilling ghost story, & I dare anyone to watch alone, at night.
As far as "disturbing", I'd say the first Hellraiser sequel did that nicely. I found TX Chainsaw (original) & Silence of the Lambs to be more disturbing, but I'm reluctant to classify flix about crazies & serial killers as "horror". Scary certainly, crime drama, yes. But a horror film (to me) has to provide an element of fantasy, or at least the implications (old dark house & wax museum thrillers come to mind). That's just my opinion, to each his/her own.

That's my take as well. If every element of the work is something that could happen or has happened in reality, then it falls out of the horror classification and into true crime, or thriller, or suspense, etc.
Again, categories are categories, and labels are labels, etc. But for me, horror must have something more than the mundane.

Denis Gifford said it best in his invaluable A Pictorial History of Horror Movies, " For me, an element of fantasy is essential to the true horror film: the impossible rather than the improbable. The vampire, the werewolf...these are the heroes of horror films, not the Lodgers & the Rippers & the Hooded Terrors."

As an adult? i guess the "torture porn" genre...SAW, and whatnot.

Nothing against those who like them...it's just not for ME.

I fully agree. Saw 1 was worth a view because it was different. Just like Blood Sucking Freaks was WAY over the top all those years ago. The basis of the story line is fine but really. I do not need to see crap (only my opinion) like this. What is left for your imagination? Was it in #3 or 4 that the black dude is bound to the gears and they start cranking and slowly twist him apart with bones snapping and "ugh". The only reason I watched most of the first 3 or 4 was they were in a boxlot I bought with a ton of other stuff and to see why they were so popular. I guess either I don't get it or so many people have gotten so desensitized with all the violence in the world. If there is gore it's gotta be a mythical monster like a zombie , werewolf etc.

That reminds me of a time way back yonder, when a friend brought over a new movie called "Faces of Death", I watched about 10 minutes of it, and then left the room.
That's almost just as bad as "Shocking Asia".

If you have not seen either of these two "Real" movies, I do NOT recommend watching them.

Having been raised Catholic I have to say that I still find the Exorcist somewhat disturbing. I found Miike's Audition disturbing too, yet fascinating.

Takashi Miiki's Masters of Horror "Imprint"

I saw it as part of a 24 horror movie festival, and elected to step outside the theater (as did MANY of the other folks in the theater as well) as the movie progressed.

It was not the images of gore, or the freaky stuff, it was the screaming during the torture sequence that went on, and on, and on, and on, and on...

I hear ya here...my cousin brought something over called "Traces Of Death" if you can believe that, and it was the same thing. It began with an autopsy of a child and then the torture and death of a cow for its hyde or something. About 6-7 minutes of it I took it out of the vcr and put in the backseat of his car....everyone is entitled to their likes and dislikes but quite frankly I dont allow garbage like that into my house.

I totally forgot about that stuff. Now that you've reminded me, I think I hate that genre of..whatever the heck it is.

I'll tell you guys something. Faces is mostly fake or staged or altered for total shock value. Traces is news footage you will never see on TV,mostly from indie sources. It is BRUTAL SICKENING DEPRESSING etc. About 10 years ago I popped in a volume , yes there are several. I think the boxset is sometimes referred to as the sixpack of death. So I pop my beer and start munchin on some pizza. Within maybe 20 mins or so the pizza was not sitting so well. I made it to about the 45 minute mark before I popped the tape out. I was depressed/hated humanity and whatever powers that be for letting this $#!& happen. I just saw close ups of the aftermath of a drive by ,a man set on fire and burned to death , the aftermath of a bombing in Beruit with the streets running in blood and still alive torn apart children writhing in pain as well as scenes from animal labs ( a major peeve of mine) and that was just the tip of the iceberg. Oh, there were the light hearted nasty cycle crashes to ease some tension. And there is a remastered DVD boxset of this crap  :o >:(. WTF. Can you say lowlife exploitation greedy MOFO?

So for any freaks out there eat this. And I hope you have a puke bucket a punching bag and no razor blades in sight. ::)

I saw a few minutes of Faces of Death maybe 20 years ago and I had similar reactions: Why?

There's enough real horror in the world that I do not need to see it as my entertainment. Our beloved monsters have that aura of fantasy that has been mentioned in this thread earlier, and make those horror movies enjoyable. Watching torture, real sorrow and pain, WTF? On the weekend I want to chill, not depress myself!

Why the need to remake some junk like this? The studios, in their brillant brainstorming sessions, decide since Saw part 27 and others like it provide their vacation homes, let's greenlight this, that way we do not have to actually pay someone to "create" an original work of art. BTW, let's throw in a Creature rock musical!

Thankfully, we all have our libraries...

Exactly Bro
I like some over the top stuff ALOT such as the Rob Zombie stuff and Hills Have Eyes remakes because THAT is what I prefer to read in horror novels. When reading MY mind creates the picture the story is telling anyway I wants. I prefer most of my multiple X watch anytime I want horror stuff to be more akin to a somewhat bloody version of the Night Stalker Kolchak realm. FUN, scares suspense, some blood and the cat suddenly jumps thru the window. Or of course the classics and 50s 60s B horror. I usually save the harder stuff for after a bad day/week and not just for Sunday coffee time viewing.

I hear that.....its just weird to me that someone would get excited about that being released. Its one thing in a book, song, comic etc...another thing is stuff like Saw and Hostel but a much MUCH different thing with something like Traces Of Death, I think its just on a completely seperate level of everything else. Honestly anyone that would aproach that sort of thing with the sort of enthusiasm say Star Trek fans went after the new movie...I gotta think to myself......I am very different then you.

Its funny when I was much younger, I wanted horror and all of it. Now that I've grown some and have seen some things and matured, I want my "horror-fiction" and really in its most tasteful form. Keep the other crap. Any dude that gets off on owning a dvd of animals being tortured or an autopsy of a child...excuse me here, but  could use a workboot to the a**

I think its safe to say there arent too many fans of the "real" stuff here...which is nice to know, having said that, time for me to move to a more pleasant topic.

I can watch most anything,
but I don't care for the Saw or Hostel type flicks-
(there was one along these lines called 'Carver' that I kind of dug)

One film I stayed away from was 'Inside'~

The only movie I can think of that truly disturbed me as an adult was the director's cut of "The Butterfly Effect."  Just plain mean and nasty.  As the time lines change, the mother gets cancer, the girlfriend becomes a scared hooker, he turns into an amputee, gets raped in prison, etc. etc. etc.  That version of the movie was relentless in it's negativity.  Just terrible.  One of the few films that made me feel truly sick and angry after watching it.  Felt like I needed to take a shower.  Haven't even considered watching 2 or 3.

Second up I'd say Eraser Head.  Yeah, that one was fun too.  Insert rolling eyes here.

Oddly, I've had no problem with movies like Saw, Hostile or Captive.

Wouldn't even consider watching any of the "Faces of Death" videos (I don't think they deserve to be called films).

I like to watch movies for fun and entertainment.  Not to feel like crap afterwards.
