I'm not sure if that was the exact name or not but I can remember my local pharmacy or deli had these little orange plastic coffins that were filled with Pez like candy in different colors. The candy itself were bones, and a skull. At the end of each piece of candy was sort of like a puzzle piece and you could actually put together a multicolored skeleton, or buy a few coffins and just put together a candy skeleton with super long limbs or whatver.
Wax teeth, wax harmonica and the little coffins....fun stuff at the register, anyone else remember these?

Love it~!  Great stuff, I wish I had some of those syrup-filled wax monsters from when I was a kid.

Mr. Bones was one of them, I've got a black coffin here and I recently found an orange one too. I don't remember what kind of candy that mummy case had in it. Good memories.

Ah those orange wax  harmonica's at Halloween. You could hear them all over our neighborhood as a kid.I tried to track some down, but was told they were not made anymore. Damn.

I've still got a couple of the coffins laying about, but I've never seen the Mummy sarcophacus before. That's very cool.

Mr. Bones still pops up.  I've got some early ones and some brighter colored re-issues from not too long ago.
The mummy container looks cool.  I've never seen that before.

I tried today to find these on eBay, no such luck. I had no idea they were made by Fleer. A company still in business that I *think is now partially owned by Marvel! I never see them anymore, but looking at some halloween candly whole sale places I found basically the same candy, in a clear coffin that wasnt 1/2 as cool...it was called scary...uhhh...scary something, it wasnt too memorable.

If its the Fleer company that was in Phila their out of business and have been for a while now.

You can still get something very similar to Mr. Bones from Oriental Trading Company.

I remember when MR BONES coffins first came out they were black.  We used them to fill our dungeons with when our MPC monsters went up against our MPC cowboys who were out monster hunting.  I got a flashback to my childhood when I saw them again in yellow, red, and green and they came in bags to be given out as Halloween treats-same size and all.  That was about 10 years ago.  Now Oriental Trading Company offers something similar.  I think the molds may have been copied and knocked off in China--as happened to a lot of cool stuff over the hyears.
Never saw the mummy crypts though.  They look cool too.

Talk about a blast from the past. I used to love those candies just as much as the actual coffins. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and for taking the time to share.

				The mummy looks very nice!

Coffin candy was awesome.  I don't remember if my uncle and i ever got a complete skeleton out of one.  We used to go to a Wolworth candy shopping.  Had to buy the coffins, gum cigars, and the packs of gum cigarettes.  I even bought an air rifle there(didn't shoot)when you could still buy toy guns.  Ah, the memories..........

I loved this stuff.  The candy wasn't anything special, it was cooler to look at than to eat, but a favorite Halloween treat to be sure!

Wow, score another for the simple stuff!  Just looking at those pics, the memory of the sugary smell as you opened the coffin is coming to mind.
I could never wait, and save the skeleton parts, till I could get another coffin to make the whole thing.

I saw some of the new coffin candy at a Johnnie Brocks Dungeon Halloween store this weekend.  It's a lot bigger than the Topps candy, but pretty similar looking otherwise.  I am betting those smaller pieces from the old days would present a choking hazard now.

I must've been the stupidest kid because the thought that these pieces were actually meant to be assembled never once occurred to me! I just figured they were bones and that was that... down the hatch. Never once gave it a second thought... lol.  Still, fond memories, for sure...

The ones we got in the UK never ever made a whole Skeleton, I think they were intended to be incomplete,  I don't quite remember - inside the UK coffins was a cool little diagram of the Skeleton puzzle pieces assembled.
I used to make various skeletal mutations with them, that would keep me happy for hours.

Not exactly coffin candy but this talk of making a skeleton reminds me of this from a couple years back. Skelly components you buy, eat the suckers then assemble a skel. I liked the display box and I have a complete set. I hope some day my great grandchildren will rip it apart and bust it all up to make the skeleton. Thus will I reach out from the grave as a sweet reminder of the good old days shortly before being thrown in the trash.

				Very cool!!!!!

I remember the Mr. Bones coffin candy and I still have a yellow one. I would have loved to have a black one but I never found one. They sold at one of the local quick stores.

I remember the wax lips and harmonicas from the sixties. www.Retrocandyonline.com (http://www.retrocandyonline.com) has wax lips, wax fangs ect.

Some folks don't how sweet they have it until its too late.  ;)

I used to have two Mr. Bones  Coffins, one white, one red, but i had to get rid of them because i had to cut back on my clutter. :'(
You didn't buy them for the candy, you bought them for the package.

I also fondly recall the orange wax harmonicas--called "Wowee Whistles." Each one had an atmospheric Halloween scene stuck to it (but not meant to be eaten). They still made these in the 80s, and I'm not sure when production stopped. In the 60s, when I was a kid, they were at every store during the Halloween season. Also, wax fingernails, not just lips and fangs--lots of wax ghosts and skulls filled with syrupy "juice," and special Halloween novelties (always made in Japan) were front and center in every mom and pop store around my neighborhood. A great time to be a kid!

Yeah, I remember a period of extensive waxness--various mustache/nose combinations with a "bite plate" so you could hold them in your mouth and have them cover your nose, buck teeth, "horse teeth," monster figures, etc.

I'm diabetic, but my one weakness every year is Candy corn. I love the stuff.

Candy corn...ugh.  I've tried, really I have.  I see others gulping down the sweet kernels and it looks so good, but it is SO damned sweet.  And nobody ever seems to finish the whole bag, the leftovers just get tossed out.
As a matter of fact the entire supply of candy corn was manufactured just once in the late 1940s and the company just goes around on November 1st emptying dumpsters of their unused corn, and re-bags it for next year!
While we're at it -- is there anything more awful than those disgusting orange Jumbo Circus Peanuts???  They're stale right outta the bag!  Ugghhh.......

LOL a couple of years ago, one of the gals at the office had a bowl full of Candy Corn to as I walked by, I grabbed a handful. Now as I've not had any of this in probably 35 years, I was shocked to find how awful it tastes! That being sad, I do still enjoy Jumbo Circus Peanuts!

Circus peanuts. Gross!
BTW, on the new blu-ray of Psycho, you can
clearly see "Candy Corn" imprinted on the bag o' candy that Norman is munching on.

Did anyone ever bite the little white tip off the candy corn say "Look I lost a tooth"?

A handful of candy corn and "autumn mix" will do me just fine for the year. Anything more is sugar overload!
Circus Peanuts are literally barf-inducing. So soft, so stale. And the color. Putrid!
Another candy I find disgusting is those fake ice-cream cones with the rubbery, marshmallowy tops. Actually, now that I think about it, a lot of candies from my youth were pretty bad. Hated Mallow-Cups, for example. But the worst, the absolutely worst candy of all time, has to be Necco Wafers. Brrr. Touching them to my tongue was akin to the feel of a tongue depressor! Never liked popsicle sticks for the same reason--or those little wooden spoons that came with Sealtest ice cream cups!
By far, my favorite kid candy--only sold at movie theaters--was Jujubes. Sold in a white box, manufactured by Heide (I think). Unlike the Jujubes of today, which are soft, gushy, and therefore indistinguishable from any other jelly candy, the old Jujubes were like little rocks. Very tasty, if I remember correctly!

If its the Fleer company that was in Phila their out of business and have been for a while now.
Fleer was bought by Marvel Comics in 1992, and the decision was then made to deemphasize the confection business and concentrate on trading cards:
Quote from: WikipediaIn 1995, Fleer acquired the trading card company SkyBox International and, over Thanksgiving vacation shuttered its Philadelphia plant (where Dubble Bubble was made for 67 years). In 1998, 70-year-old Dubble Bubble was acquired by Canadian company Concord Confections; Concord, in turn, was acquired by Chicago-based Tootsie Roll Industries in 2004.
Although Fleer emerged intact from the late 1996 bankruptcy of its parent Marvel Enterprises (caused by overexpansion and a fundamental lack of understanding of the comics business by majority owner Ron Perelman), when the trading card business faded, so did confectionery-less Fleer:
Quote from: WikipediaIn late May 2005, news circulated that Fleer was suspending its trading card operations immediately. By early July, in a move similar to declaring bankruptcy, the company began to liquidate its assets to repay creditors. The move included the auction of the Fleer trade name, as well as other holdings. Competitor Upper Deck won the Fleer name, as well as their die cast toy business, at a price of $6.1 million. Just one year earlier, Upper Deck tendered an offer of $25 million, which was rejected by Fleer based on hope that the softening sports card market would revive.

I've got a white and 2 black coffins, and 3 small white plastic skeletons that came from a school Halloween carnival residing in them.
I saw neon colored skeletons at my grocery store that came from the same molds last Halloween so they are still around after all these years.
They are a perfect fit for the Mr. Bones coffins .

Alright---I know this is necroposting....thread died several years ago. But who cares? Today, for the low price of $1...I got a (harder to find) BLACK Mr. Bones coffin-- with a miniature rubber skeleton from the 80's crammed inside it,lol. It looks grand with my Munchy Mummy candy container. Hard to believe the awesome stuff we had as kids of the 70's-80's. Sadly, no fossilized candy was inside however, lol.
I realize the nostalgia factor may be lost on 60's monster kids...but give us Johnny -born- latelies a chance here, lol. 8)

Quote from: BlackLagoon on May 04, 2009, 09:18:54 PMGood call...I think its pretty much a done deal!
Frank Fleer's descendants sold confection company Fleer in 1989 to other private interests for just under $70 million. Fleer at the time marketed confections under name brands which included the iconic Dubble Bubble brand together with trading cards.
The comic book company Marvel Entertainment Group purchased Fleer from these private interests in July 1992 for US$340 million!  Marvel then purchased another card company, SkyBox International, in March 1995 for $150 million and merged Skybox into Fleer. I clearly remember wondering at the time what more Marvel was really getting purchasing Skybox as well since Marvel already had the Fleer vehicle/name brand to market any cards they could. Well I was right to wonder. Marvel declared bankruptcy in 1996.
The Dubble Bubble name brand was sold to Canada's Concord Confections in 1998. Concord Confections was itself acquired by Tootsie Roll Industries in 2004.
Marvel sold Fleer/Skybox to private interests for no more than $30 million in February 1999. Fleer went bankrupt again in early 2005 and Upper Deck bought the "Fleer" brand name for $6.1 million in July 2005.
How's that for a sordid tale of corporate incompetence on the part of Marvel?

You don't see many around here (Los Angeles) in shops. Even during Halloween, there's not much variety. What are your main areas of interest, if I may ask? Do you like classic horror, modern horror, slasher, supernatural....? Just curious.

Sorry for such a late reply! I actually spoke about various "halloween candy" with a friend the other day, and we both agreed on that they do not really seem to understand that it's only halloween once a year.. Haha. There is always candy skeletons, eyes and what not in the stores the whole year around here. And pumpkin decorations! Like, I bought "cottoncandy spiderweb" yesterday and it's july.
I won't complain though!
My true main area is comic books but when it comes to movies I prefer classic horrors and psychological thrillers. I guess you could say that I prefer that creepy feeling you get when you realise something, over the one that pop-up jump scares gives you.
