Time to choose!! Which do you prefer???
I am 100% Munster! Cant argue with the ghoulist family ever! The house rocked, George Barris' cars were incredible and the jokes never get old, I love this show and each charecter in it!
It's the Munsters for me as well. I watched both shows but felt closer to the characters in the Munsters. The best thing to me about the Addams' Family is the original cartoons on which the show was based.

When I was a kid. I liked the Munsters a lot more. Now I like them almost the same, but The Munsters just squeaks by.
When I was little I really liked the Addams Family more. I wanted to have long braids like Wednesday's. But now I love the Munsters much more. The seem like a normal family just monsters. A nice twist on family life.

When both shows were originally airing The Addams was a can't miss. I considered The Munsters stupid. Frankenstein was supposed to be a MONSTER not a big goofy funny galoot.
But I wasn't in it for the comedy back then. I wanted macabre and ghoulish. Now however at age 55 I pick The Munsters! I love the makeup, the sets and the gags. I love them both actually with a slight edge to Herman and company.
Ok...in a REAL Munsters vs Addams - Battle Royal which family would win? Could Herman take Lurch? Fester vs Grandpa?

Oh Packy Packy Packy!...good question and easily answered (take it from a guy who has pitted every action figure against each other...and still does! :) ) First Herman's strength was showcased alot in the series, Lurch was a big boy, but I think Herman would most likely take him down and spin him around then throw him into orbit.
Fester and Grandpa? Grandpa was waaaay too quick witted, plus the power of a vampire.....no contest! MUNSTER=WIN!!
Blacky I totally agree. Do we see Eddie and Wednesday trying to sneak off to play and Pugsley stepping in to protect his sister? Pugsley gets his jugular ripped out. Eddie and Wednesday grow up and marry hence the true origin of the GINGER SNAPS movies.
I can see Eddie and Wednesday getting married. But suppose Pugsley doesn't have his juglar vein ripped out? Will he grow up to be a man of the world? Or with the JV ripped out he could be a man of the spiritual world?
I love both families, but my favorite would have to be the Munsters!!!
I love the Munsters -- but if I have to choose one over the other, I have to say I'm an Addams Family man. Munsters are goofy fun -- Addams family has a sharper sense of humor -- edgier, more twisted. Munsters are friendly -- Addams are disturbing. I'll take disturbing every time.
I prefer Munsters over Addams, but love both shows. My daughter is the same way except she prefers Addams over Munsters.

As a kid I watched The Addams Family more so than the Munsters. I like them both but based on nostalgia alone, Addams Family wins for me
Plus Morticia was fine and Gomez was hilarious IMO.

I loved both as a kid, and still do as an adult, it would be hard to choose but Grampa was always a hero to me when I was a nipper.
Addams Family was on Friday nights at 8:30 here in the Detroit area on ABC Channel 7. Our bedtime was 8:30 the rest of the week. We were allowed to stay up "late" that one night to see the Addams Family. My Dad would make a big bowl of buttered popcorn. When my dad made the popcorn it was about 1/2 popcorn and 1/2 butter. No wonder his arteries blocked up and he needed a quadruple bypass.

I met Al Lewis years ago in New York as he owned a little restaurant called Grandpa's.
I kid you not, he really did.
and if you think you have heard every curse word there is in this world and the next, then you have never spoken to Al.
The stories he used to tell out loud in his place would make you want to crawl under the table.
He made Redd Foxx seem like a choir boy!
also...I forget what movie or it might have been an episode of "Edge of Night" but he played a guy who ratted on the mob and his was taken outside and killed.
I wish I could remember the movie or episode because.....It was my Dad who killed him!

This reminds me of our "stay up one night a week" when I was young. We got to watch Sea Hunt - with popcorn or chex mix stuff. Where I learned to love knife fights! On the show not my house...

While I enjoyed the Addams Family, I was a big Munster fan. There was something diabolical about the Addams Family. I mean I got the impression people were killed behind the scenes and it was part of the joke. I'd be afraid to wander the halls of the Addams home for fear of becoming a victim, but with the Munsters it would have been awesome.

I always thought that Morticia was pretty, but her face was more child like. I always thought that Lily Munster was pretty, too. She had a graceful way of moving that Morticia could not. I though Wednesday was just plain old cool. I loved all the long hair! If only my mom just didn't keep chopping mine off....
Again, I love 'em both, but heck, I'll critique anything!
My main gripe about the Munsters was (which I realized even as a kid) it tread over the same water (and jokes) repeatedly. Overall the writing was a vehicle for Lewis and Gwynne (with DeCarlo on the side), and the characters of Eddie and Marilyn usually having little (of merit) to say other than 'that's right, Aunt Lily' or 'OK, Pop'.
Now I LOVE Yvonne DeCarlo as Lily (she is an icon to me), but all Lily's "the last time..." jokes got stale, even as a kid, as did the rest of the cast's regular use of 'tired blood' and cliche Monster Jokes.
It was the ensemble acting, not the writing, that held The Munsters together, and there was incredible chemistry among the three principals.
The Addams Family's approach to writing just seems fresher and more creative to me (and esp. for its day-including the sex jokes); I think its approach to comedy better employs well-written character interaction/development as its vehicle and is more clever and complex, less reliant on olde vaudevillesque one-liners for laughs. Addams forces my brain to think up weird stuff, like just what are they doing with all those torture devices, behind closed doors, when we're not watching?

I think that is precisely the reason why I dug the Munsters so much. It was pretty much seeing the "American nuclear family" as my favirote monsters and it was just good "clean" fun.
To put it another way, if I was a somewhat stranger to both families and had to spend the night at either house? I think you would feel safe and warm and perhaps even cared for if you slept on the couch over at the Munster place. The Addams house?? Ummm...I think it may be very unnerving and scary, you'd pretty much be counting the minutes till sunrise ....THAT may be just the appeal to both families and viewers.
I'm really torn on this one. Have to think about it...
But the Munsters' house was...dirty...and... well, really dirty.
The Addams house always seemed clean and very homey to me, having grown up in a victorian-built 'antique house', much like their's. As far as being afraid of the Addams? I have friends now that are a lot weirder than they are. :D

Yes the house was "dirty"..but I cant help to think that Herman and Lilly would make sure that I had a blanket and pillows before I turned in for the night. I could being woken up by Herman and Grandpa with the sounds of a midnight snack..and I might join them.
I think in the Addam's house, I may wake to being tied up by Puglsey and Wednesday something of the sort....I just thought the Munster clan was a bit more warm and loving then the Addams family.
Plus the cars! Those cars are still 2 of the coolest rods I have ever seen!!

I asked everyone at work today who they thought was best: The Munsters won hands down. Main reason most often given: "Those two cars were awesome." Then the debate started over which was cooler: "The Munster's Coach or the Dragula". That might be a thought for another thread. David

The Munsters in a landslide. The Addams Family had the better song though.
I loved them both and the fact that one was not born of the other. Like Star Trek and Star Wars, each had their own classic worlds.
As a Monster kid...I was more intrugued by the Munsters and the cameos by Gilbert and Lester et al, due to the Universal thing, but Addams as I seemed to get to see it so rarely.

The Addams Family to me was better because it worked at a higher level of wit and sarcasm. The Munsters, although fun, was too straightforward with its gags. I also didn't like the idea as a child of pokig fun at my monsters. Herman was a silly Frankenstein and that just didn't go over with me.

I love them both, but being forced to choose I'll go with The Addams Family. As others have pointed out, their humor was more clever, & visually more interesting IMO.
I'm a Munsters man , myself. From their house, which always seemed to be so cozy and welcoming, to the characters themselves. They were like family members that you only got to see every once in a while.
I think what won me over more than anything, though, were the special effects. The effects in The Munsters were always top-notch, while the effects in the Addams Family always seemed dull. As a kid I didn't care much for piquant or witty humor, and I still don't. I just wanted a good, old fashioned, entertaining show, and The Munsters supplied that.

Hands down for me The Addams Family. John Astin as Gomez was the best. I watched both shows and enjoyed them both. Just had something I connected with.
For two shows that were supposed to be competing against each other as similar fare at the time, I find it tough to choose which one i like more...they were SO different! If i 'm in the mood for subversively clever, sexually deviant humor, It's the Addams Family hands down...if i'm looking to satisfy my child like love of all things Universal, it's gotta be the Munsters. I'm just happy i have the two to choose between to quench whatever my thirst may be at any given moment.

One of my favorite episodes was when Fester got a job as an insurance salesman and sold Gomez the $1 Million Dollar Life Insurance Policy (which was a HUGE risk, as Gomez was in the middle of an experiment... he was sky diving with a smaller chute each jump because he hoped he eventually wouldn't need a chute at all)...
I use this analogy in my discussions about 'tipping points' at work all the time. ;D

Not to take away from the Addam's Family. The Munsters were just funnier, and the house was awesome!!!!

The Addams Family - for me. My relatives were more Munsters, but I always thought the Addams family were much more interesting people to know. I even enjoyed the more recent re-hash of the Addams Family, once I got used to them in color.

Honestly, for as much as I have always loved The Munsters, the older I get, the harder it is to watch! :-\
I loved both, but I've always given the Munsters a bit higher rating because they're more monster-like, whereas the Addams Family are more, well...just creepy. I'd have killed for a team-up between them, like the Green Hornet/Batman team-up. Wow! :o
