Title: Classic Scooby Doo
Post by: Wolf Man on April 07, 2009, 10:10:39 AM
I was watching an edition of the Classic Scooby Doo the other night with a werewolf chasing them.  It occured to me that the Scooby Doo cartoon had really quite a lot of classic monsters in the show.

I just saw the werewolf episode, remember one with Frankenstein, Dracula and a werewolf, they had many shows with Mummies, ghouls and swamp creatures along with other ghosts and spooks.

It really reminded me why I was such a big fan of the show as a youngster.  This was a cartoon that honored all the Universal Monsters.

How many of you are fans of Scooby and the gang?

Has everyone seen all the monster episodes?

This cartoon will always have a place in my heart as it showed a love for the old classic monsters.

Also, we have a Mystery Machine located in Chesapeake Virginia.  I wish I had time to go take some pictures for you all before heading back to the middle east.  Perhaps next time.

Huge Scooby fan, if not for the landscapes alone! I agree, the writers there must've been heavily influenced by the Universal gang and the whole Monster Kid scene. Fun stuff, and I love the colors...especially in swamps and mansions. The greens and blues are awesome. I actually have the 1st 2 seasons on DVD and its great, packaging is really cool too!

Good luck in the middle east!

Zoinks!  Like you bet man.

Scooby was about all us 70's/80's monster kids had on the tube to hold us over until a Hammer or Universal flick came on.  My daughter became a huge fan so I got her the Season 1 and 2 sets.  They gave me a whole new love/discovery of that classic show, many episodes I remember fondly but some I'd never even seen....or just don't remember.  The backgrounds in the show were really some excellent works of creepiness some really great paintings.

We just watched disc 2 from season one last night and the episode A Gaggle Of Galloping Ghosts had Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein in it.

This disc also had the classic Which Witch Is Which?, you know the one, zombie & witch searching for the armored car in the swamp.

I figured there were a lof of us UMA ers who would naturally love the Scooby episodes.  They do kind of go hand in hand.

I heartily agree about the backgrounds too, very moody and atmospheric.  Made you just want to visit those places.

i absolutely love the show! Especially the earlier seasons. Man, when i was a kid, if my mom tried to drag me out shopping when Scooby-Doo was about to come on, you better believe i raised Cain, lol... ;D

My daughter also became a fan, and she has a decent collection of dvds, dolls, figures, etc.,....

I'm a big fan of the original series. The atmosphere and the various monsters were very cool... and those Scooby Snack looks delicious.

I loved the original Scooby Doo series as a kid. Still do, in fact.

I remember The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo even had a character voiced by Vincent Price. The show was just awful, though.

I'm a big fan of the fist 2 seasons plus the New Scooby Doo Movies that followed.  I still watch them on Comcast On Demand service and even have some animation cels.

While 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo wasn't up to par with the rest, Vincent Price was part of it so I even hunted down some Vincent Price animation cels.

Rock on, Scooby!

Jinkies, having grown up with Scooby Doo, I can't help but be a huge fan.  At least of the original show anyways, didn't really care for the later editions ( especially the ones with the Scrappy Puppy Doo).  Even though they always turned out to be crooks in costumes, it was groovy to see all the classic monsters and spooky creatures.  As a monster kid growing up in the early `70's, Scooby Doo was must watching.

Wow MDG, I did not know you were the father of Shaggy!  Very cool.  I don't know why your son would get mad about that?  Just tell him how hot Daphne was and he will get over it.

Yes, Scooby Doo was great for us monster kids with great memories...

Being an elementary school teacher, here's a story from one of my kids at school: He was telling me about how he and a couple of friends were going to play The Mummy at recess and he was so excited about it. First thing I think of is the new Mummy movies (with today's generation usually fleeing from black and white) so I asked him if he has seen them and he says no he's going to be the Mummy on Scooby Doo! He then proceeded to described the bandages, the walk, their game, the whole 9!

7 year old first graders acting out the classic monsters! Needless to say, I was all smiles.

I guess the angry villagers will be after me shortly. I agree that the monsters were cool and the backgrounds had good atmosphere but I just never liked the show much even as a kid. I may have to see if there's episodes on Youtube since I haven't even attempted to watch one in years.
I wholeheartedly agree with Creepys that the later episodes with Scrappydoo are horrible. PUUUP-PY POWER!. Please, just shoot me now.

One question I do have what with Scooby being so popular with the wanna be show didn't do better?
Know which one I'm talking about? Goober and the Ghost Chasers. I believe Paul Winchell was the voice of the dog that could become invisible.
Title: Re: Classic Scooby Doo
Post by: Wolf Man on April 12, 2009, 10:32:11 AM
You know Wicked Lester, I think most of the fans of the show would agree that it was only the early seasons that were the best.  When Scrappy Doo and Goober showed up and some of the other Scooby ventures they just weren't the same.  I was very disappointed in the live action film too because it did not have the classic formula or theme.  They could have done so much with it but it just did not work for me.  I would have loved to see them do the live action of the Frankenstein, Drac and Werewolf episode.  That would have been very cool for us in the UMA.  If you want to check out any of the shows just check out early stuff and see what you think.

Like several over 40's, I can recall watching the very first episode when it aired. Also, if I ever missed an episode, I'd grill the neighborhood kids to learn what monster/spook was featured that week.

Oh boy, do I ever remember the first episode!  My anticipation of it is what got me through that first week of school.  It was 1969 and I had just started 3rd grade, having just moved at the end of 2nd grade from Flushing, NY to northwestern Ohio, where I was having a tough time making friends.  The fear, anxiety, and depression of those first 3 days of the new school year (School always seemed to start on Wednesdays) was offset mostly by looking forward to "that cool new Saturday morning scary cartoon, Scooby=Doo"!  I wasn't disappointed!

I love Scoob and I love classic Hanna Barbera in general. But they started going down hill with "shows" and "hours"....Scrappy doo was horrific and so was Scooby Doo and Dyno Mutt Hour....however, both charecters seperately are awesome. 2 Great dogs...and Blue Falcon was the MAN!

For those interested the entire series of Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby-Doo comes out on dvd June 29th!  List price at Amazon is $14.99.  My girls love anything Scooby so we'll definitely be getting it and besides that any exposure to Vincent Price can't be bad!  Worst part about this show was Scrappy and on top of him they added Flim Flam who comes off just as annoying as Scrappy.

I a 53 year old Scooby fan. I remember watching the first episode and the promos they ran a couple of weeks before. Just like most of you Scrappy Doo can take a hike along with Scooby Dum. I liked the Scooby Doo movies with the guest stars every week . I have almost all of season 1 and all of season 3 on DVD. I never cared much for A Pup Named Scooby Doo or that awful and poorly drawn Scooby and Shaggy Get A Clue. I do have some of the new movies which are like the original show and What's New Scooby Doo isn't bad either. Did anyone see the Halloween Special with KISS? That was cool. I will pick up 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo mainly because of Vincent Price. The actual show wasn't that good.

I saw it up close and really liked it.  They had all of the ghouls right there, too, next to it.  It's tempting to add to any 'haunted house' collection.

Unfortunately these are the only monsters that made it into the 5" scale.  They did an android, but its outta scale with these. No snow Ghost, Kooky Space Kook, Phantom Shadow, etc, etc, etc,.  As a matter of fact most of these were only available in the UK.  Dunno why--but there you have them.

I did not know that. Thanks for the heads up.  I didn't mind What's New Scooby Doo but hated Scooby and Shaggy Get a Clue. Poorly drawn and badly written. I don't understand how Hanna Barbara let them do this to the classic cartoon. I am waiting for the DVD release of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo.

I'm not only a fan, but I've been writing the "Scooby-Doo" comic book for over a decade and more than 100 stories. My favorite part is being able to drop in references to various monster movies, actors, make-up artists etc.. The Mystery Inc. gang has sailed upon the "Rita," tackled Rick Baker and Doug Jones and attended Monster Bash where Ben Chapman helped them solve a mystery centered around Millicent Patrick, among many other classic horror inspired mysteries.

This looks like that anime crap that they used for Shaggy and Scooby Doo Get A Clue. How can Hanna Barbara let this happen when they do close to original animation on the movies? A definate must miss!

Alas, I don't really have much stock in Scooby-Doo comics. I've passed most of them out when I've made appearances at various elementary schools, or as prizes to trick-or-treaters who cme to my house dressed as classic movie monsters or Scooby-Doo characters (which sadly is not many kids these days). Dennis Druktenis of "Scary Monsters" magazine may have some of the Monster Bash issue. Check with him.

I believe Paul Winchell was the voice of the dog that could become invisible.

A very talented Ventriloquest! He was also original voice of Tigger and the voice of Gargamel in Smurfs.

As a kid, I got his autorgraph, and at the time learned that he had invented the first artificial heart, when he signed Dr. Paul Winchell.

According to Wiki
Winchell was also an amateur inventor, becoming the first person to build and patent a mechanical, artificial heart, implantable in the chest cavity (US Patent #3097366).

The comics are published by DC Comics.

If a 39 year old kid came to my house dressed in a Scooby mask I'd be alarmed. I'd give them a Scooby comic just to make them go away.

I think this was from the very bad Scooby Doo Get A Clue, that was on CW Kids for 2 horrible seasons.  It wasn't a mystery or monster show, and concentrated on Scooby and Shaggy (the rest the gang only showed up once if I remember right).  Even my daughter hated it and made me put on the DVDs of Scooby Doo Where Are You season 1 when it was on.

I didn't catch this yet but I will.

There actually isn't much Scooby Doo that I don't like.

Even going back to Saturday mornings on ABC in my Jr. High years..."A Pup Named Scooby Doo" used to make me laugh. Constantly blaming that kid "Red Herring" was funny in itself.

Here's one to ponder and maybe I'm wrong here--but why wasn't there ever a Scooby Christmas episode/movie?

H-B is usually all over that and you could easily incorporate the Christmas Carol ghosts, or story itself into the Scooby Doo world.

Just seems like a good fit and a fun story.

A Scooby-Doo Christmas, also known as "Ho-Ho-Horrors!" on its Cartoon Network airings, is a Christmas special that first aired on December 13, 2002. It is the second Christmas episode of the Scooby-Doo cartoon series, the first being "The Nutcracker Scoob".

Scooby-Doo and the gang arrive in a town where Christmas is not celebrated because a headless snowman terrorizes the residents, so the gang sets out to solve the mystery.

The special was released as a bonus feature on the DVD release of the third season of What's New Scooby-Doo?

I haven't seen that one but they are playing it tomorrow in the morning I believe. Cartoon Network is having a Chirstmas in July day. I just saw the new Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. It was pretty good. It is the first episode I have seen. It seeems to be a little more intense than the original cartoon but I guess it is because they had to update it with the times. I have the Scooby Doo Movies dvd but they only have 15 out of the 25 episodes on it. I thought it was because of copyright but one of the missing episodes is with Josie and the Pussycats which they own. That is kinda of mystery in itself. I noticed on the beginning of the cartoon during the theme song they changed
some of the opening sequences like they replaced the scene of Lurch and the Addams Family with a knight on a horse which makes me believe they are not going to release anymore episodes.

At our now weekly backyard drive in, I decided to show the 1st Scooby Doo movie, mostly for something viewable my two year old, which raised once again an issue I have with PG & PG13 films in the past 20 years. As do I, LM loves the classic cartoons, and for the outdoor evening shows which we do, we tend to show something colorful visualy attractive to him.

I am not a fan of bodily sounds humor (or ancillarily related) which seem to show up in the most unexpected places, but I guess I had forgotten about the burp contest, which further digressed into a gas passing competition.

This was something which I was disgusted by in SW EP1, with Jar Jar stepping in a hot and steamy, and then later taking the full blast from one of the domesticized creatures.

I recall seeing this sort of humor for the first time in Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles" which comprised an entire scene, and at the time, do recall finding it uncontrollably funny--probably because one never experienced this in a film before quite like this. Today, it is almost common place, right up there with sitting on the throne shots.

This is definitely for another thread, and I apologize, but I just don't understand the need to resort to the lowest forms of humor.

ok, I have vented.

Yer wish is granted "Scooby Doo Halloween" 2003

In this primetime special, the Scooby Gang heads to the eerie town of Banning Junction to spend Halloween with Velma's aunt (voiced by Julia Sweeney), uncle (voiced by Diedrich Bader) and the beautiful and flirtatious cousin Marcy (voiced by Jenny McCarthy). The gang joins the townspeople in celebrating their renowned "100 Years of Halloween" festivities, including a crowning of the Queen of the Masquerade Ball and an amped out performance by KISS (with the voice of Paul Stanley). But when strange and spine-tingling things begin to happen, a fearful townswoman (voiced by Rhea Perlman) blames it is the ghost of Hank Banning, the town's founder and ousted mayor, back to seek revenge on the town that wronged him 100 years ago. While Shaggy (Casey Kasem) and Scooby (Frank Welker) anxiously wait to meet KISS, go trick-or-treating for tons of candy and have -- not regular scary, but Halloween scary -- fun, they reluctantly aid Fred (Welker), Daphne (Grey Delisle) and Velma (Mindy Cohn) in putting their investigative skills to work in hopes of revealing who is really behind the Halloween mischief. Additional guest-voice appearances in the special include Stacy Keach, Tom Kenny and Daran Norris.

Anyway back to your boy...not sure if you guys have it yet, but if you pick up KISSOLOGY Vol. 2--it comes with the re-release of KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park, now called "Attack Of The Phantoms" when I was about 10...I watched that movie so much I literally wore out the vhs tape.

It is corny by all standards, but a 9 year old KISS fan will be in heaven!! Plenty of "action" and you who can forget KISS fighting Frankenstein and the boys in the haunted house!?  Good stuff....if I had a DVR I would send you a copy...maybe someone else here has both it and a dvr?

Anything not quite appropriate for a 9 year old??

I really don't think so bud. It's a Hanna Barbera movie in the 70's. (literally! and they use plenty of HB's cartoon sounds throught the film)

I don't even think there are even any mildly sexual undertones whatsoever.

Here is the plot off the top of my head: KISS is playing a theme park for a few days straight. The "engineer" of all the "robots" and props is Abner Deveroux "The Phantom"--basically it's like a body snatchers type deal, he is getting rid of the current staff who he is at odds with and replacing them his look alike robot henchmen...in fact, KISS becomes powerless and is also replaced....including a live performance by "evil KISS" where the lyrics to Hotter Than Hell become "Rip And Destroy"...trying to brainwash the fans into doing their destructive deeds.

KISS finally gets their powers back and have some big brawls with their "evil dopplegangers"--some Universal Monsters and other  various robots....and finally a showdown with the Phantom.

The movie opens with Rock And Roll All Nite...they do I Stole Your Love using the massive Love Gun stage and a few others.

The movie is absolutely horrible and I love it....basically they replace the Scooby gang with KISS and it's not a cartoon--that's the short version of everything I typed lol.

This is Marvel Comics, Mego era KISS.....nothing too dangerous here, just fun stuff with great music!

I haven't really paid that much attention to the Mystery Inc. episodes, though both my girls love them, until...episode 6 The Legend of Alice May!  This one featured a pretty cool (or ghoul) reference to Scooby past...as soon as I heard the impersonation I immediately looked up at the tv!

I'll just post a youtube link (you'll have to copy and past in your browser) so those that have youtube compatibility issues, the part I speak of begins at 2min 6sec~

http://www.youtube.com/ (http://www.youtube.com/)
watch?v=Px8jQ10FF8E

Here is another reference they throw in later on in that same episode....an episode which also deals with the daughter of the classic Scooby-Doo villian, The Creeper.

Another reference, not Scooby persay but Hanna-Barbara, I noticed in another Mystery Inc. episode featured the teen versions of Pebbles and Bam Bam playing volley ball as the gang drove past in the Mystery Machine.

That's silly.

Sure nothing will ever beat the original, but the new stuff still has plenty of monsters and mystery to go around--if little kids are digging it and there's something for the original fans...whats the problem??

That'll teach you not to go to other sites, and even more importantly it'll teach you what makes UMA different than any other site. We're here to celebrate your passions WITH you.........not to look down our noses from some ethereal ivory tower and judge your preferences.

If you think it's cool, if it means something to you, someone here will concur unashamedly. And the rest will let you relate what's cool about it that we may be missing.

Let's face it, we're all geeks. What could be more absurd than a geek hierarchy, or geek snobbishness, in which so many other sites indulge?? Face it Judd..........you're a UMA zombie now.  ;D

So I guess you didn't inform them of the premier of Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, this fall, which features the same cast from The Mystery Begins!??  The kids and I can't wait!

The first couple seasons of the original series are just golden in my book.

That said, I kinda like the current ":Mystery Inc." incarnation . . . it has a certain reverence for it's own history.

Yep, I remember watching Scooby-Doo Saturday mornings!!  Absolutely enjoyed them as a kid!!  I watched the New Scooby-Doo movies but did not watch any of the later stuff.  I have all the original on DVD, and happily my grandson likes them.  And I'm working on my granddaughter too.

Big fan of the original 'Scooby Doo Where are You' cartoon, even bought the complete series DVD.  Not a fan of the later cartoon versions, but do love all the Live actor movies so far.  I think there are four live, two theatrical and two cartoon network DVD's.

I enjoy the original run of Scooby. The thing that impresses me most about the show is the backgrounds. Granted, the HB "planned animation" leaves something to be desired...but those backgrounds are absolutely beautiful!

The "planned animation" allowed Hanna Barbera to crank out the animation several times faster (and as a result cheaper), so I commend them on their prolific output. Monster Boomers grew up on HB. I will always love Space Ghost, The Herculoids, and many other HB shows. Jonny Quest is the best damn cartoon in history!
