Title: WWJD? What would Joe-collector Do?
Post by: packy120353 on April 05, 2009, 05:21:41 PM
I went to a toy show today. I putzed around and picked up a couple things here and there. I had a twenty in one pocket to spend and a twenty in the other pocket - "just in case". I was down to one buck of my first twenty and was getting ready to leave. I saw something I liked marked three dollars. Not wanting to break the other twenty, I said all I had was (LIAR!!!!) one dollar left and could she consider letting it go. She said probably not, she'd "go two". After some schmoozy-talk she acquiesced and I gave her "my last dollar". I  turned - and saw a pack of Universal Monster Party "Blow-outs" with the old logo, marked four bucks. I had missed those, Oh no!!! Now I had just got done convincing her I was out of dough. My question: What would you have done? Said well whaddya lookee here, now where did this other twenty come from and bought the thing?...Say hey I want that and I'll be right back after I go find an ATM and fake that?...Just whip out the twenty and buy the thing and completely disregard it?... Or do what I did...feel sheepish about fibbing and accepting that my consequence is not getting that item? I just left, happy with what I did get but knowing I missed out. I ask you as fellow collectors: What would you have done? In hindsight she probably wouldn't have even cared and been happy to sell me more stuff! So I ask the Sellers out there: What would YOU do if someone insisted all they had was a dollar then came back and bought something else?

"Hold onto that, lemme see if I can get my buddy to lend me some money, I'll be right back."

I wouldn't have been a cheapskate over 2 bucks with another $18 in reserve. Just an honest answer.

Ditto.  I guess I'd probably chalk that up to a little white lie.

LOL! Yes you're right what's 2 bucks? I am most definitely a cheapskate when it comes to my collecting hobby because that's part of the fun for me - I almost always try to get a better price than what's marked. Yes a 6" generic (not a Marx) Marine is worth the 3$, I just wanted to see if I could get out of there with the other 20 intact. Love your honesty - thanks that's why I asked! Maybe I'll rethink my plan next time.

Yeah, I wouldn't have said I had less money than I actually had, especially when we're talking about $1 vs $2.  I can understand not wanting to break your $20, but then my solution might have been passing on the toy soldier.

Mine too if I had seen the other item first. I didn't see it til after I had given her my last dollar in that pocket
I really was going to leave then whether I got the soldier or not so I thought I had nothing to lose. But I learned my lesson. Decide on the most I'll pay for something and stick to it and either get it or not regardless of whether I have more or not.

i'd never pay full price to being with, knowing that it's over-priced to begin with so the seller has room to negotiate. it's always been my experience that a seller probably paid around 30% at most of the asking price. i certainly don't begrudge them a profit, but having been there and done that myself, i also don't want to have to pack up more crap than i have to if it's getting late in the day. invariably i'm more open to negotiation towards the end, just like how some folk run a garage sale (which in that case just irks me when they operate a garage sale like a business).

had i lied in the first place, i'd go ahead and lie again, go away and come back with some story like borrowing a twenty from a friend or using the ATM or something. you don't know exactly how some people would react, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if she didn't sell you anything else.

Aye, Kiptin

Do you like the cowboys and stuff too?  I have a few that I was going to donate because you can't really sell them on eBay, but I'd rather donate 'em to you.  Your address the same?
