Title: DVD Freezing
Post by: Mike Scott on July 15, 2025, 09:14:43 PM
Someone explain this one to me.

Thought I'd watch Superman '77, so I put in the theatrical cut and watched for an hour, or so and then the disc freezes. Nothing works but the off button.

Well, this set also includes the extended cut, so I put that in and FF it to close to where I had left off . . . and it freezes at the same exact spot in the movie that the other disc did! Again, only the off button works.

Tell me that that is even possible!

If you noticed a slight blurry streak  of white and red right before this happened each time it was probably Krypto messing' with you!

I'm not surprised by any tech snafus anymore. The obvious is that it should work properly or not at all, but in reality we get this onslaught of chaos which usually means something partially working just enough to piss us off more. DVDs/BDs are great overall but a very small percentage either won't load or hit you with goofiness like the problem described above. The disc probably wasn't authored correctly and there's nothing to do for it but buy another one and hope it doesn't have the same problem.

Some companies have a greater percentage of defective discs than others in my experience. I've noticed more problems with Code Red, Scorpion, and Media Blasters than other makes, and to a lesser extent Synapse (my Vampire Circus combo set BD won't load at all, tried on two different BD players, but the DVD works fine and has the same features).

But this isn't 2 copys of the same disc. One disc has the theatrical cut of the movie and the other disc has the extended cut. Yet they both freeze at the same exact place in the movie. That's just supernatural!

Yep, pretty weird. They may have repeated the same authoring mistake on both discs, or it's just some strange incompatibility problem with your player. Have you tried them on different players?

I've had weird incompatibility issues with discs and different players for CDs, DVDs, and BDs.

It's likely a faulty disc manufacturing issue with Warner Bros. DVDs that were pressed at a particular plant between 2006-2012. The data layers have slowly separated over time, causing the movie to freeze and stop at the layer change (usually the midway point). You can Google lots of stories about it.

I first became aware of the problem seven or eight years ago, resulting in me doing a quality check of all my Warner Bros. discs. I found I had dozens of DVDs affected by this problem (most were from 2-disc or multi-disc box sets). The studio is aware of the issue and it's gotten a lot more attention from vloggers on YouTube recently. You should be able to exchange the defective discs for a replacement copy (or if it's out-of-print, a substitute title) if you reach out to their home video division. Since this is a known manufacturing problem from over a decade ago, they haven't been requiring proof of purchase for the exchange as long as the disc is still in good shape and not heavily scratched.

Are they planning on reselling it? Otherwise, who cares what condition it's in.

The woman that handled my case (who is no longer with Warner Home Video) wanted to personally inspect the discs to make sure any playback issues were not the result of mishandling by the customer. She told me any titles with scratches that I mailed in would be rejected. They may have gotten more lax on the requirements in the years since, as these defective Warner discs have gotten a lot more attention and scrutiny lately.
