I saw a lot of classic monster movies on The Big Movie Shocker in the early/mid sixties. This show aired out of Atlanta and was hosted by Bestoink Dooley (George Ellis). Some movies I remember seeing on there were Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Monster on the Campus, The Indestructible Man, and The Deadly Mantis. Lots of great Universal Monster Movies mixed with lesser fare for good variety. It aired every Friday night around 11:30 and was rerun on Saturdays for awhile. I probably saw most of them on the Saturday show after cartoons. I was only 4 in 1963 and probably conked out too early to watch most of the Friday shows, though I do remember fighting sleep and sitting up late with my parents watching a few of the shows. We moved back to the Chattanooga area around 1965 and I watched Dr. Shock and Dingbat in the '70s, but that's another story.

In the early '70s my Horror Host was Dr. Shock hosting Shock Theater airing out of Chattanooga, TN Saturday nights after the local Channel 9 news around 11:15. The good doctor was played by Channel 9 weatherman Tommy Reynolds and he was accompanied by his puppet sidekick Dingbat (Dan East). The Shock Theater theme music was Black Sabbath by the classic band of the same name. Dr. Shock wore a cape and carried a plastic skull noisemaker on a stick which he belted Dingbat with periodically. Dingbat was a real smartass, so he deserved the abuse. The pair of reprobate scamps usually gossiped about local Chattanooga characters like Mean Uncle Floyd, Black Jack Blalock, and Red Bank Reena. They also had their regular shticks like Dingbat doing the "news"..."FLASH, FLASH, FLASH...Hello all the ships at sea and all the sheep on the farm...let's go to press!!!" They had local guest sometimes and the Dr. had a hot nurse called Nurse Goodbody. They got away with a lot because mostly it was just us kids watching it. Some of the double entendre wasn't that thinly veiled. We loved it and had plenty to talk about the next week at school. They showed some cool monster movies like Universal classics, Hammer, AIP Poe with Vinnie, and foreign films usually uncut. I remember them showing Brides of Blood and Mad Doctor of Blood Island with all the nudity and gore intact, several times. ;) Later in the '70s Reynolds and East took their act to Channel 12 and East added more puppets to the mix like a pig named Congressman Wilbur Ripsnort. As cool as it was to see them continue the show it was never as much fun as those earlier Channel 9 episodes.

Yep. In
Brides of Blood we saw Beverly Powers' bare hinder, and a bunch of native girls tied to poles and running through the jungle and in
Mad Doctor... we saw more native girls in their birthday suits as well as Angelique Pettyjohn on display. Made a kid proud to be a monster movie fan!
