Title: Happy, Merry, Joyous Winter Solstice!
Post by: Monsters For Sale on December 22, 2022, 12:19:32 AM
Today is the shortest day this year.  Daylight will increase by a few minutes each day until the sometime in June, 2023.

I don't mind the hours of darkness so much as the cold.  I can't seem to feel the warmth of my house.  All my thermometers tell me I am warm - so why do I feel so damned cold?

I thought it got dark awful quick!

Some appropriate music.

Cold? In Los Angeles?

???

I find it too piss warm in Toronto these days. Plus the city is full of hysterical weather wimps who hyperventilate at the first mention of snow in a very un-Canadian manner. (They should of course be flogged and deported.) Eventually I'll have to pull up stakes and move somewhere that gets more snow and other properly Canadian winter weather.

Cold? In Los Angeles?   ???  ...

I turned 75 last October, and my biological thermostat is on the fritz.

When I was much younger, I lived in a motorhome.  When I awoke for work on some mornings, I could see my breath - but I did not mind the temperature as much as I do today, living in a properly heated townhouse.

Recently, it has been in the 50's during some days and dipping into the 30's at night.  I live in Orange County about 5 miles from Disneyland as the crow flies - and another 5 miles from the beach, if it flew the opposite direction.

Getting ready for some real cold here in PA.  When the rain moves out Friday the gusts will be around 40+ mph or more,  then dropping to the single numbers. Cold, I can stand, wind like that, different story.

Brrrrr!

I've lived in southern California my whole life.  I think pictures of deep snow are pretty, but I wouldn't want to live where I had to deal with that every day when I went to work.

It's 11 degrees and snowing (barely) in N/W Ohio, right now.

OK, here is a question for everyone:

How many members will be having a White Christmas this year?

                      Not me.

Possibly, but probably not.  If any snow falls on Friday, it might linger until Sunday, with the cold.

Definitely a white Christmas here in Northern Idaho. It's 3 degrees and snowing this morning. It's warmer today than yesterday when our local temperature was -6. Too cold for cross country skiing or fat tire biking, but just right for reading old issues of FM🥶

It's snowing now with an "accumulation" of five to fifteen centimetres of snow expected between today and sometime tomorrow. The temperature outside is currently -4 Celsius with a drop to -11 predicted later in the day. The temperature tomorrow is expected to range from -6 to -7 and -3 to -7 on Christmas day which means the snow won't be melting.

However a snowfall and temperatures of this magnitude are no big deal. They're a big "So what?" But!!! Severe winter storm warnings are being broadcast over the airwaves. Schools have been closed. Toronto residents have been strongly advised not to travel because this is the type of weather that brings ravenous polar bears in off the ice flows from the lake (or something).

Such hysteria! Such weather wimps! It's absolutely embarrassing. As I've been saying for decades now, there's nothing wrong with Toronto as a city. It's the people I don't like. They're less Canadian than any other place in Canada (with the possible exception of Vancouver).

Not much of a chance out here in Simi Valley, "Home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library".

So not much more than a pathetic two centimetres of snow fell yesterday. Right now it's a clear and crisp -11 Celsius (which for those who haven't yet mastered fifth grade arithmetic translates to just over 12 degrees Fahrenheit).

Or I could just look at a conversion chart.

We had a thick fog last night.

With any luck, we might have another heavy fog tonight.  Then, although we won't have snow, parents can at least tell their little ones it is another night for Santa to be helped by Rudolph.

We didn't get the "Foggy Christmas Eve" but starting Tuesday they are predicting rain five days straight - kinda unusual for this area.

Pity the poor kids who got outdoor toys for Christmas.  It won't stop raining until their Christmas vacation is up and they are back in school.

Great Jeshosaphat! Snowmageddoan and Snowpocalypse all-in-one! This photo is from NPR - Cheektowaga, NY. Hard to believe in five months...the East Coast will be warm sunny days, gorgeous green grass and flowers. Stay safe and stay warm to our snow region friends!

The winter season is amazing. Gotta respect Mother Earth and her ways. I used to live back East and loved the look newly fallen snow.  :)
