Title: Vintage masks in ads and articles.
Post by: Dr.Terror on November 22, 2022, 04:30:50 AM
Ive always loved seeing masks in old ads  or neespaper articles.       Here's one I recently came across with a Don Post "smooth" Glenn.

And here he is....wrestling legend Dr. Frank.

'Great topic, Dr Terror. You're a master detective when it comes to sniffing out such esoteric ephemera.

I have no idea where this image was originally published or exactly when/why but it looks to
be latter 1960s judging by the finishes on those Don Post masks. I see a Phantom, Mummy
(behind MickeyMonster), Frankenstein, and part of Cousin Eerie along with a couple Randottis
against a background of The Haunted Mansion attraction. Disneyland retailed DP masks for
decades back then.

Thats a good one. Dont recall seeing it before.

Here is one with a couple very rarely seen Hollywood Horrors Drac, Wolf , and Phantom.  Seeing how thin they are cast could be a big reason none exist.

The Haunted Mansion Attraction first opened in 1969, so there's a chance that this ad is from 1969 to maybe the early 1970s. The HM facade was first built in the 1960s, but I'd be surprised if it was used in many promotions prior to it's opening.

For this pic, Disney crew went directly to their Main Street magic shop and retrieved those Don Post masks for this photo op.  Disney sold the Post Calendar Monster Masks for a few years.

As Noted by Sir Maskalot.

Love these old mask ads thanks for posting these.

'Still my favorite "Captain Company" ad for the DPS masks.
I first saw it in Famous Monsters #47 which is also the
first issue of FM I remember owning. As a kid I used to
draw pictures of the masks, hoping they'd turn out looking
just like these ad portraits. 'Came close a few times.

Mine, too! The masks never looked better than in that b/w ad!  :)

It's odd that the "highbrow" Phantom didn't make it into that ad
from 1967. They even had a nice portrait of it by then.

Wow, I've never seen or was aware there was a black background "vers B" Phantom shot.    Is there one for Hyde?

I've never seen such a portrait of the old six-tooth HYDE.
The fact that DPS was still showing the earlier five-tooth "Calendar"
version in their catalogues until the early '70s suggests to me that
they may never have photographed the reworked mask. For now,
you'll just have to settle for this one I shot some years ago >

The "Monsters" series is thought to be the very first line of classic
horror characters marketed by Don Post Studios. I'm unsure of exactly
when they premiered, either 1963 or '64. They definitely preceded DP's
celebrated "Calendar" masks. 'Sorry to admit that I have no clear memory
of ever seeing one outside of magazine ads like these.

'The infamous "sweater ad", introducing Don Post's original "Universal Horrors" series
which then included that movie-mold artifact: the "smooth Glenn" Frankenstein.
For all the heady precedents these masks established back in 1965, their debut ad
by Captain Company looks to have been rather carelessly arranged. The model wore
no eye makeup and made no "costume" changes beyond that dark knit sweater. The
characters were not dynamically posed, some were omitted entirely (where is the
Mad Doctor?), and there appears to be post-session retouching to the mouth paint
on several masks >

These flaws would all be righted with the "Calendar" photo shoot soon after,
the portraits from which were later used in ads and DPS catalogues for years
to come. This "sweater ad" could very well have been its direct inspiration.

My idea for this thread was masks that appear in random advertisements not so much the magazine ads selling them,    I don't have a free image host anymore so I don't bother posting images,

That's the biggest problem with the site and a HUGE reason why nobody posts here anymore. You have to jump through hoops to post a simple picture.

Well, it's your own fault for not starting a "Vintage Mask Ads" thread by now, lol!

You could pay four whole dollars a month, like I do, or look for a free host. I found one in under a minute.

I wonder what the purpose of that photo was. Did those guys ever appear in an episode of "McHale's Navy"?

Episode 33 of season 3, "The Vampire of Taratupa" aired 4 May, 1965.

Be sure to watch around the 4 minute mark, Mike.
