Title: 1963 Rosan Famous Monsters series Ad
Post by: Muggs on March 31, 2022, 11:39:00 PM
Was there ever an ad in the back of the Captain Company mail order for the 1963 Rosan Famous Monsters trading cards? If there was, please let me know what issue. Thank you.

Welcome to the UMA, Muggs!  :)

That's a good one! I can't say that I recall such an ad, but you'd think there would have been one.

Captain Company mail order? Do you mean a Captain Company catalogue or an issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine? And do you have a vague memory of such an ad?

???

I'm talking about famous monsters of filmland magazine. I have not found an issue advertising the sales of these trading cards.

I went thru every 1963 issue of FM and no ads for the cards.

The FM card set that I have came through Captain Company but cards were offered in dispenser machines (?) in retail also (I got a few from a machine in a drug store lobby in St. Paul, Mn in the 60s). The top of page 90 in the Famous Monsters 1965 yearbook has an ad for the card set. That's how I got a set. The ad may be in other issues but I'm not searching. I just knew of this ad. I believe this is the card set being discussed here~ if not, sorry.

Muggs,
Though referred to as 1963, the FM card set was actually issued in July 1964 according to one reliable source. The Brooklyn based Rosan Company produced the infamous 1963 Terror Monster card series before they produced the set for FM. 1963 copyrights or datings were probably dragged along as the movie titles used consisted of the same familiar AIP monsters as before. But the FM card set hit the market in 1964.

Warren probably had major input on the FM set production (the amateur make up monsters and Captain Company ads from the pages of FM along with the regular AIP stuff) and discussion probably started in later 1963. Perhaps delays occurred. As an example, look at the lengthy Elwar monster pinback history for FM. It's an interesting series of starts and stops. As I'm sure you know, the 1965 Yearbook was actually published in 1964. Check out the July 1964 issue #29 Famous Monsters. The ad is also in there: on page 90. Also, observe how the ads are similar to the ones on the card backs.

Well that fully explains why it's the 1965 Famous Monsters Fear Book that contains an ad for a set with a 1963 copyright!

There's a lot of expertise on this board. At least one of us it seems has the particular insight to answer some particular question.

Thank you for that amazing info Richard. Does anybody know who actually owned Rosan Printing Corporation? what happened to them?
