Title: "We Will be Monsters" Universal tries...something.
Post by: Anton Phibes on March 05, 2022, 11:46:00 AM
This isn't my cup of tea, and any similarities between this project and our CLASSICS is PURELY COINCIDENTAL (in my opinion). Here we go, got 10 minutes? Reminds me of when they did Monster Force and things like that. Between this, and the cartoony approach designs Super7 just unveiled, they seem to be trying to reach the younger crowd.

I always wanted to hear Karloff (as The Monster) say, "Let's do this!"   :P

I would have to sit down with a comic book version of this and re-read it several times
to make any sense of what's going on here ... that is, if I cared enough.

At least they keep on trying. Maybe one day they'll hit on something that works.

Wow, and not a good kind of wow.

Atrocious.   When will Universal understand.  Just find a way to give us new ways to consume  the classic interpretations of the monsters.   Nobody likes this stuff.   Monster Force is another example, same with Van SmellStink.
Can't just slap Uni Monster on something horrer related.

Looks like somebody made a sequel to "Kung Pow, Enter the Fist", but with Universal Monsters. I invested 2 minutes of time watching it, before I turned it off.

Which is probably a good thing! After all, my own love of monsters developed from the monster stuff that targetted specifically kids in the 1959-1966 years. And precisely those items are still the ones I most highly treasure today.

You realize of course that you're making the logical mistake of transposing your own tastes/preferences onto everybody else. I suspect that somebody else may very well like this stuff, that being kids if they're targetting kids. And that's not really a bad thing you know.

Why don't they just stick to making Fast and Furious sequels  ::)

Interesting perspective.

I thought it was a steaming pile of CGI crap.

To each his own.

I can't say what it is since I haven't seen it. What I am saying though is that targetting kids instead of old geezers like us isn't automatically a bad thing.

We liked the monsters when we were young because they were cool looking.  Not because we were young.  Pretty much the same reason I like them now.     Every time Universal has tried to grab kids without sticking to the classic look has failed.

Its not the monsters that need reinventing, its how they are delivered.

I think you should watch it first.   It's lame to people of any age.   10 year old me would have hated it.    I was turned on the the monsters via the Remco figs.   No reinvention there to appeal to kids.   Just the classic monsters made consumable for my generation.

I agree. That's why I liked monsters as a kid as well.

And that's still my bottom line. I still dote upon whatever I might have thought was cool looking as a ten year old. A great example of this phenomenon are the MPC Pop-Tops and the smaller Weird Monsters. I wasn't aware of them as a kid but I'm sure I would have loved them because the sculpts are so wild cool (plus the latter were available in family packs of Frito-Lay Corn Chips). They are therefore among my very favourite monster items these days.

Thats why what Uni does makes me scratch my head.   Cool is cool.   There are lots of younger fans into slasher stuff who now love the classics because of Neca, TOTS etc.

I had the little glow MPC as a kid a loved them. I had no clue they were sculpted almost 20 years prior.   They just looked cool.    I was born 20 years too late because I love all the old stuff.  Always have.

Something to note that you wouldn't catch if you don't wait til the end - this is a collaborative thing with Fortnite.
(The purple cube thing is an ongoing element in the game).

They introduced classic versions of The Mummy and Frankenstein last Halloween:

My kid's reaction was twofold. He was mad that they aren't doing the classic Larry Talbot (Chaney) Wolfman, but still wants to see what they do with these new versions.

He said "that was cheesy as all heck"
but then also glad that they are doing *something* new...

Keep in mind though that your son isn't exactly typical and thus representative of other kids.

Quote from: boompoppow on March 16, 2022, 05:20:13 PMThankfully - I have a son who is dragging me back to it, and I've fallen fully back in love as I watch the older films with him and pre-screen things I haven't seen in decades trying to figure out what he's ready to see and what needs to wait.

...he is looking for more monster kids (especially *actual* kids, since we're finding that most of his fellow 8 year olds don't understand why anyone would even watch those old things...)
