First of all I just love the imagery associated with Halloween. I love the jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, witches, black cats, bats, owls, ravens, rats, scarecrows, skeletons and gravestones!

Cool spooky art!
As much as I love Halloween and everything that goes along with it, I think, for me at least, it's tied with Christmas. I love Christmas and the wintertime (although autumn is my favorite), but most of all, Christmas means people are nice to each other and Christmas movies are on tv. I celebrate Halloween year-round (even during Christmas), but I love the leaves on the ground, pumpkins, cloudy skies, and cool breeze in the air.
Put me in any one of those scenes this Halloween and I'd consider my night a complete success. Thanks for the artful observance, Hepcat.
Awesome art!
Definitely beautiful art.
And I love the decor associated with Halloween such as the Beistle die-cuts from the last 100 years or so:

Great thread
Gosh, why do I love Halloween? It's spooky, it's a celebration of fantasy and creativity. It brings the community together. It's all about giving and not receiving (at least for the adults). I love the Fall. I love scary movies. I love celebrating horror and I think being able to laugh at it for one night is healthy for humanity. I've never associated Halloween with Satan or anything like that. I do recall in college I invited a friend to my dorm because I was going to tutor her on some math homework. When she walked into my room and saw all the Classic Horror movie posters on my wall, she said "oh my, this place is Satanic". She made me go back to her room and listen to gospel music...
Welcome to the UMA, Alex! :)

And I love all the tacky kids' costumes from the late 20th century! Whether by Ben Cooper, Collegeville or Halco, whether horrific or just cartoony, none of that matters. What's key is that they be tacky kids' throwaway costumes that could be purchased at Woolworth, Kresge, Ben Franklin, W.T. Grant, G.C. Murphy, J.G. McCrory's, Newberry's, Zellers, Metropolitan and other five-and-dime stores across the nation.
I still recall the awe and longing with which I admired the costumes hanging from the ceiling of the downtown Kresge and Metropolitan stores in my neck of the woods. I knew though that there was no way my mother would spring for something so profligate as a single use costume back in my trick or treating days pre-1965. Still because of how closely these costumes are linked in our minds to the joy of trick or treating, they're highly prized by sundry Halloween enthusiasts and collectors these days:
Here are a few examples:

I need to vent. I love Halloween and everything that comes with it: decorations, spooky things, store displays, the autumn weather, and of course movies. Today I finally had some time to go out and get some candy for trick r' treaters and to get some extra special goodies for my young nieces.
So I started off at Big Lots. One small isle of about ten decorations spread out and nothing further for Halloween. But they did have a huge Christmas display. No candy, spooky goodies, or anything else Halloween-related. Discouraged, I left for Target.
At Target all the isles where the Halloween stuff was bare with Christmas decorations going out. One isle had about 5 kids costumes and a few small bags of Reese's. Thats it. No decorations, no store displays, no music...nothing.
Next was Barnes & Noble. They wouldn't let me down. They usually have a cool Halloween display up and some Halloween books I can get for my neices along with candy. Nothing. No display. No books. No nothing. I asked my wife, who works part time there on weekends, what happened to al the Halloween stuff. She said it was taken down a few days ago to make room for the Christmas and regular displays. But it's not even Halloween I said. She said try Giant Eagle they might have something. Angerly I left the store mumbling under my breath at the displeasure I was feeling. I even told her this is why stores are suffering, because they don't care about the customer, only what's coming next.
At Giant Eagle they still had some pumpkins and decorations outside for sale, but inside, near the flower section was all Christmas decorations. The isle of Halloween candy was mixed with Christmas candy and decorations. I grabbed a few bags and left.
I think these stores need to slow down and enjoy the holiday at hand. There is absolutely no need to take down Halloween decorations to make room for Christmas when Christmas is two months away and Halloween hasn't even hit yet! To say the least, I'm upset. Thankfully I get to sit at home and watch monster movies and have some coffee before heading to work at 10p tonight.
That's also the way it is at the two Dollarama stores in my neighbourhood:
Xmas stuff has already largely replaced Halloween items.
:(

And I love the trick or treating!

We've added a couple of other details to our Halloween traditions over the last fifteen years or so. The first is pizza as we wait for the arrival of trick or treaters. Bacon, ham, mushroom and onion with extra cheese is our favourite ingredient combo:

Plus a colourful Halloween cake like this one from a few years ago:

Big Shadow- I hear ya. This year was exceptionally rough for Halloween hunters. We started looking at the beginning of September and every weekend since hitting up all the local favorites. There was not a single store that had the shelves fully stocked as in previous years. Guess we can blame that on the conditions of the world, but the way they shuffle through it to get to the next holiday is sad. The one change I noticed most, and this started around here about 5-7 years ago, is that starting on Nov 1st, you cant find ANYTHING Halloween on the shelves. I used to take Nov 1st off work, because all the stores threw everything on super sale to unload. I would always get a nice haul. Now it seems they pack it right up and save it for the next year.
That being said, I am grateful for what we did have, and I can start saving up for next season!

We often wait until the last minute before getting the cake because they're usually marked down late in the day. We got this year's Halloween cake after it was marked down 50% at Loblaws.
Only seven trick or treaters this year so we now have plenty of leftover Old Dutch Popcorn Twists and candy!

We had around thirty trick or treaters this year, much better numbers than last year🤠 Most of the kids are young, under 12, but they enjoyed our skeletons and talking gargoyle. Things are usually pretty quiet after 8 PM, so we have time for a large bonfire and libations after handing out candy! Like Hep, we always have pizza for dinner, but do pumpkin pie to finish things up. It's nice to see these traditions carrying on.

We had about 25-30 little ones come by this year...

Awesome collection
I should also mention the noisemakers and other Halloween tin toys. I wasn't even aware of their existence ten years ago but I've really come to appreciate them because they're wild cool! Kirchhof Life of the Party Products, J. Chein, U.S. Metal Toy Mfg. Co. and T. Cohn were among the most noteworthy manufacturers of Halloween noisemakers and sundry tin toys until the latter part of the 20th century.
Here's a picture of Horrorhunter's collection:

Man, Halloween has always been my favorite. All the decorations are excellent!! I definitely have a few Halloween decorations up in my apartment year-round, but no fancy collections yet. However, most of my clothing is Halloween-themed or monster-themed to some extent, which leads to a lot of fun conversations with people.
Next to Christmas, Halloween is my favorite holiday and they're so close as favorites you can't slide a sheet of paper between them!
Way cool Halloween display photos🎃
I saw a fun horror movie, Halloween themed music vid on YouTube. It's an older video but new to me. It's called Modern Monster Mash. It points out the difference between old school horror and modern horror.
Are you talking about the video by Key of Awesome where they have Freddie Kruger, the Ring girl, Hannibal Lecter, etc? That one is hysterical!

Yes. My coworker, who's into horror hadn't seen it before either.
I just discovered that video the other day -- lots of fun!
Speaking of older material, I just ordered the dvd version of Alice Cooper's "Welcome To My Nightmare". It's both a concert video and the tv broadcast from 1975. Planning on watching it Halloween night once my bonfire burns low!

I've already chosen, actually sampled, this year's cake:

I've seen these in all six colours of the rainbow with various eye and mouth combinations. The purple one I bought yesterday had a chocolate layer on top inside, then a vanilla layer in the middle followed by a pink layer on the bottom. There's still time enough before the big day for me to score an orange one and a green one!

Sure do miss him..🥺
Since no Trick or Treaters show up at my house, I always participate in the Trunk or Treat my church holds. My only car is a 1995 Funeral Coach, so it's fun to show up, and hand out candy from a small pet casket I bought online.
