Title: BUILDING A COLLECTION OF MONSTER MOVIES
Post by: CountWolkoff on September 09, 2021, 08:36:56 PM

BUILDING A CLASSIC HORROR COLLECTION

With my car nearly paid off, I'll be getting a little more money into my wallet. It was only about a month ago that I had the idea of collecting the classics from the 1920's to the early 1960's; primarily on a DVD or Blu-Ray format. Two have been stricken off this list so far, and more are to come.

Here's a bunch of lists I did. They are mostly by studio and chronological order, but I did the Universals a bit differently. I think I should add a list of German horror and sci-fi.

Collection Log. Sept. 13, 2021.

Attained the Dracula and Frankenstein Legacy Collections by mail this morning; received Bride of the Monster three days ago. The sets added a total of eleven movies, not counting the duplicates of House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

The forum does not allow me to post images of what I've attained, nor will it allow me to upload my own avatars and I have no interest in using current-day parasites to represent me.

UPDATE: Thanks for the assist, Mike. I understand how now.

You got it!  :)

I see you have Alpha's "Nosferatu". You might want to check out Kino's release. (It's 8 bucks cheaper at amazon than getting it from Kino.)

Funny thing is that I owned the Alpha version for 18 years. It’s the oldest in this collection, in both acquisition and age. Not bad if you mute it (the only thing you’d miss is a LAUGHABLE soundtrack), but I’m holding off on future purchases until my finances start to right themselves.

As per Mike's suggestion, I upgraded NOSFERATU. However, certain sources online said not to get the KINO release, so I went looking for the version whose clips were the first I had seen of the film. This is actually the version whose scenes I'd first saw nearly twenty years ago, and was disappointed that the Alpha Video release was a different version. Got it cheap, too, less than $10.

For the time being, I am putting the collection on sabbatical, as I am currently... not in fine fettle in terms of finances.

EDIT: Now comes the question of the Alpha Video copy. Should I give it to a friend (who has his own collection) of hang onto it? Does it seem a bit redundant to have two copies of the same film?

The IMAGE DVD is a good one. Certainly much better than the ALPHA.  I still like the KINO for it's new recording of the original German score, it's original color tinting and all of the DVD extras!  :)

After a long sabbatical to allow my finances to straighten itself out, I am now able to resume building my collection. Today, my copy of The Mummy: Complete Legacy Collection arrived, so that's 6 off the list! :D

After one incident where I had mistakenly attained a European release of this film, I now have an NTSC copy of this classic piece of Woodwork. It's part horror movie, part documentary, 50% stock footage, and unintentionally hilarious. It's 1953's Glen or Glenda?.

Quick question. Are the Universal Horror Collections any good? With these, I can knock out four entries apiece.

You must get Vol. 1. It has the '30s Karloff/Lugosi classics "The Black Cat", "The Raven" and "The Invisible Ray".

If you're a die-hard Universal fan, you'll want them all, but they are "B" movies and one viewing is often enough for the casual fan. There's still some semi-classics scattered throughout, like "Man Made Monster" and "The Mad Ghoul".

With the arrival of my copy of THE INVISIBLE MAN COMPLETE LEGACY COLLECTION, the biggest names on the list are more or less taken care of. Time to debate the next step: Ed Wood's REVENGE OF THE DEAD or UNIVERSAL HORROR COLLECTION VOL. 1?

Kino's 2011 releases are lesser in quality, but their 2002 DVD is worth a buy: https://www.amazon.com/Nosferatu/dp/B00006JDSI (https://www.amazon.com/Nosferatu/dp/B00006JDSI)

As for it being redundant, I wouldn't say that since most PD releases are the 60 or so minute long Atlas US version which (obviously) differs from the uncut 90 or so minute long original. Not to mention all the various different scores a lot of releases have (from James Bernard to Type O Negative).

UPDATE 12.25.2022

Merry Christmas! Guess who got UNIVERSAL HORROR COLLECTION Vols. 1 & 4 today?

Can mark roughly another 10% off the list with...

HOUSE OF HORRORS
THE CLIMAX
BLACK FRIDAY
NIGHT KEY
NIGHT MONSTER
THE BLACK CAT
THE RAVEN
THE INVISIBLE RAY (I've been told that Bela was great as Karloff's sidekick!)

Nice! You'll love V1. Three classics (and 1 not so classic). I wouldn't cll Bela a "sidekick" in any of those movies, in fact he's the star of "The Raven".

V4 is good, too! "Night Monster" is very good, and "House of Horrors" has Rondo.  :)

Basically, if you have the complete 31 film Blu-Ray or DVD collection, that is a really good place to start. It will put a sizable dent in any list you can conjure. Also, if you only buy that and nothing else, that is certainly enough to satisfy.

UPDATE 4.26.2023

A bit of an accident, though it did help me a little.

A friend of mine I work with has a birthday coming up, so I ordered two copies of Man-Made Monster, starring Lon Chaney, Jr: one for him and one for the collection. Said he never saw it, so I thought why not!

In doing so, I've kinda ruled out getting Universal Horror Collection Volume 3 and will have to attain the other films in the set individually. C'est le vie!

It won't be till May 6, so I'm debating if I should get him something to go with this? The Devil Bat, perhaps?

UPDATE: 10.18.2023

After five months of inactivity, I’ve made my first addition to the collection in a long time, thanks in part to me beginning my Christmas shopping early. Normally, I order one copy for myself, but as the friend who inspired this endeavor is a fixture on the list, I ordered two instead. We will both be gaining two flavors of PHANTOM: Chaney and Rains.

As of yesterday afternoon, one copy of PHANTOM ‘25 (The Film Detective restoration) arrived and was added to the collection. The other copy and the two ‘43 copies haven’t gotten to me yet.

UPDATE: 10.19.2023

The 1943 PHANTOM copies arrived and one was added. The other, along with the extra, will be bundled as a Christmas gift to my friend.

Do you have the same problem I have?  Buying too many movies too quickly and not able to keep up watching?  I have a stack of movies and books that keep getting bigger and bigger, but I can't keep up with them.  But I do love having physical media, especially of my favorite movies.

Yep. I bought so many DVDs through the years and some still have the shrink wrap on them, lol. I love having them though. It's great having a library where I can pick and choose so much in addition to streaming. I can always find something I'm in the mood for.

BUILDING A CLASSIC HORROR COLLECTION

It was only about a month ago that I had the idea of collecting the classics from the 1920's to the early 1960's; primarily on a DVD or Blu-Ray format.

Below is everything I've been searching for thus far. If there are any more recommendations, let me know:

Hmmmmm, so no Godzilla, Gorgo, Horror of Dracula or any Hammer flicks at all?

:-\

I actually do own a copy of GODZILLA '54 (packaged with the 1956 Raymond Burr edition).

(Also, can't find a standalone copy of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE...

I don't think there are any. You can get it in this set. Only 8 bucks at amazon. The other 3 are available on Blu-ray. Don't know why they didn't do J&H?

Found an Aus. DVD of A&C Meet J&H. It's Region 0, so it should play on any machine. Only $8.

But the Monsters collections doesn't have ...Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff, does it?  You've got to get the complete movie set for that one.

UPDATE 1.10.2024

One step forward, one step back:

After finding and buying what was supposed to be a standalone NTSC copy of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE on Amazon, attained it only to discover it was Region 4, so the disc wouldn't read. I was under the assumption that it was a Canadian release, similar to my copy of LICENSE TO DRIVE. Sending back for a refund.

You can get the "Meet the Monsters" set (all 4 movies) even cheaper.

UPDATE 1.31.2024

My uncle was sick at Christmas and couldn't come down from Columbia to join us, so we just exchanged gifts.

Among what I received was UNIVERSAL HORROR COLLECTION, Vol. 2, which allows me to scratch off THE MAD GHOUL, THE MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET, MURDERS IN THE ZOO, and THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. RX!

At the time, I wished they had replaced "The Mad Ghoul" with "Man Made Monster" to make it an all Lionel Atwill set.  :)

UPDATE 2.7.2024

With the inclusion of THE BLACK CAT '41, I can safely island-hop Universal Horror Collection Volume 3.

(Kinda weird that Bela was in both this one and the '34 film)
