Title: R.I.P. Aunt Jemima!
Post by: Hepcat on June 17, 2020, 09:06:06 PM
R.I.P. Aunt Jemima 1889-2020. Though many of us still love you, the verdict of the mob is thumbs down.

The Pillsbury Doughboy needs to go next. Stay Puft is getting tired of the comparison and the fat shaming.

Are Chef Boyardee's days numbered now as well? His offerings were a staple of my diet for decades.

The Aunt Jemima image changed a number of times during the years, to reflect the sensitivities of the times.

Here was the smiling Aunt that I remember from the 1950's:

I've seen that same image in a TV commercial from 1959.  Don't know when she was dropped for the next iteration.

Would the poor kindly old lady who happily served pancakes and syrup to so many generations of Americans (and Canadians too) have been so cruelly put out to pasture for being out of step with the times had she not been African-American? Does anybody have any insight into the prevailing attitudes and culture at the Quaker Oats Company? Inquiring minds want to know.

???

Betty Crocker looked best in 1986. Why did they change her appearance in 1996?
