Title: "Renfield" Movie Coming from Universal
Post by: the_last_gunslinger on November 20, 2019, 05:21:48 PM
A movie about Dracula's henchman is reportedly in the works at Universal. Dexter Fletcher is reportedly attached to direct, and the script is supposedly being written by Ryan Ridley, from an original pitch by Robert Kirkman.

So is this something we want?

I read somewhere that this will be comedic to some extent. Kind of like What We Do in the Shadows, which I like a lot. I dunno. I'll give it a shot if it looks good. I'd rather they make straightforward gothic horror versions of their monsters, but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen. I'll say this, I'm more interested in this at this point than the new Invisible Man movie, which looks like it's going to be the Invisible Man in name only.

Yeah, I'm hearing a blend of crazy, comedy, horror and sci-fi. Unfortunately it's supposed to be set in modern day. My preference is for period pieces, but they never consult me before making their movies.

What's next, a movie from the viewpoint of Jenny Hall?  (1933)

I saw it Tuesday. I wish I was more enthusiastic, but it wasn't what I had hoped for. Nicolas Cage made a good Dracula, and the reference to the Lugosi movies were nice. However the overt gore and  a Renfield that looked more like a superhero troupe turned me off. Dracula is best when treated with a gothic tone, an undercurrent of sexuality and foreboding menace. People torn in half and body parts used as lethal  spears was more grind house than classic horror.

I know there's fatigue from Marvel movies, but I wish I could have  a Dracula as written by Roy Thomas in The magazine Dracula Lives.  I thought Marvel pulled off Werewolf By Night well and I'd welcome a Dracula Lives adoption.

I saw it on Wednesday, and really enjoyed it. Nick Cage was at his best playing Dracula.
