Special effects make up artist John Buechler was also a director. He did work on many low budget films for Charles Band and Roger Corman including Ghoulies, Carnosaur & Bikini Drive-In. He was also the Director of Troll, Ghoulies Go To College and Friday the 13th, Part 7. His company MMI provided effects for many low budget films and gave a start to many up and coming Special Effects artists. By the way, Buechler's Actor credits include a version of NOT OF THIS EARTH with Michael York that I've never seen. This film doesn't have many good reviews and the Traci Lords version is enough to make me avoid the title in most cases but, to see Buechler's addition and seeing that he's mixed comedies in his repertoire, it makes me curious enough to seek this one out.
I really loved Buechler's work in that when you saw a Buechler creature, you could easily recognize it as his work. Just like when you see a Harryhausen creature, you know it's a Harryhausen creation. Buechler's career peaked during the wonderful practical effects days of the 1980's and regardless of the quality (or lack thereof) of the production, you could count on Buechler's monsters lifting the movie to an enjoyable level.
I own a nice VHS copy of Fangoria Weekend of Horrors-1986. Mr Buechler is featured and discussing about his Troll film.
