Title: New Frankenstein magazine
Post by: zombiehorror on September 02, 2018, 11:42:14 AM
Picked this up at Lowes of all places; around 95 pages.  The sections are Shelley's Modern Prometheus, Frankenstein Goes To the Movies, Universal's Frankenstein, Frankenstein in the 50's/60's, Hammer's Frankenstein, other various Frankenstein films and finally more modern fair; $12.99 cover price.

Thanks, zombiehorror, for pointing this out!

You made me go looking for this.

Amazon didn't have it so I tried eBay.  Found a slightly cheaper option:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/FRANKENSTEIN-200TH-ANNIVERSARY-PARADE-MAGAZINE-SPECIAL-2018-ATHLON/323425216074?hash=item4b4da5264a:g:urwAAOSwGeFbgzUX (https://www.ebay.com/itm/FRANKENSTEIN-200TH-ANNIVERSARY-PARADE-MAGAZINE-SPECIAL-2018-ATHLON/323425216074?hash=item4b4da5264a:g:urwAAOSwGeFbgzUX)

But, hurry.  Only 2 copies left.

Not any more.  :(

Seller started out with only 4 copies.  He had sold one before I found him - then I bought my copy.

Those last 2 didn't last long.  I hope UMA members got them.

(Wonder how he managed to sell $12.99 magazines for less than $8.00?)

Good question! Even if he bought some wholesale, you'd think he'd ask sticker price?

Cool!  I think I've seen similar tribute magazines at Rite Aid.  Will check it out!

Same eBay seller has listed 4 more magazines:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/FRANKENSTEIN-200TH-ANNIVERSARY-PARADE-MAGAZINE-SPECIAL-2018-ATHLON/223128435808?hash=item33f37dbc60:g:urwAAOSwGeFbgzUX (https://www.ebay.com/itm/FRANKENSTEIN-200TH-ANNIVERSARY-PARADE-MAGAZINE-SPECIAL-2018-ATHLON/223128435808?hash=item33f37dbc60:g:urwAAOSwGeFbgzUX)

They are $7.21 plus $3.21 shipping from North Carolina to California = $10.42.

Better than the $12.99 newsstand price.

The scoop per Monster Magazine World:

The popular Sunday supplement found in many U.S. newspapers has published a special FRANKENSTEIN COLLECTOR'S EDITION magazine commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelley's monster.

I was surprised to see it for sale on the Barnes & Noble newsstand. It covers the chronology of the Universal Studios films and the various sidelines that have been created about the monster.

It's a little pricey at $12.99, but it's a nicely-produced magazine. Although it looks to cover the kind of ground that Monsterologists are already familiar with, it would be useful to anyone not familiar with Frankenstein in the films (but who isn't?) or wanting to have a summary of Frankie's career between two magazine covers.

One gripe that I have is that, while taking an admittedly quick look through the pages, I found no reference to the man responsible for creating our collective modern image of the Frankenstein Monster, Jack P. Pierce. That will be remedied with an updated message from MMW. Stay tuned. . .

Glad to find this at my bookstore.  It is a Cool publication, and another welcome Classic Monsters Halloween 2018 item!
Jack Pierce is in a photo making up Karloff at the start of the Chapter 2 'Frankenstein Goes to the Movies' article.
He is quoted within the text with his  decision of giving the monster a flat head.

It is rather short articles, and jumps fast between historical chapters-but it is just a one-shot, I presume.  Complied from Parade articles, that is how these were originally published, now gathered into this mag, like Life is publishing many one-shot mags about various celebs, rock bands, historical figures, etc.

Glad they published this fun collectors item, short on being a full chew, on the subject we all love to savor so much.  One being the 'Franken-Merch' article, thought this was going to be a page turner photo filled article-one page article, with image of Franken-Pez taking half the page-only.

I totally had second thoughts about this purchase, when I read of the two mags editors-in-chief, and writers view that 'De Niro's performance very nearly equals that of Boris Karloff'...?   Well the cover and back page is a nice textured rag feel, all in celebration of 200 yrs of Frankenstein!

I received mine today from an eBay seller. This is a nice comprehensive magazine. The post I made above from Monster Magazine World made it sound less than it is. But, that was their take (which is generally pretty accurate, but not always it would seem).

I paid a little over $10 for mine including shipping and I noticed that seller relisted more at $2 cheaper!? Heckuva deal for a $12.99 cover price mag. If I walked into a bookstore in TN (with 9.75% sales tax) I would have to fork over in excess of 14 bucks for a copy which may have been well perused by previous readers and in lesser condition as a result.

eBay sellers are blowin' them out really cheap now. Here's a link to a seller asking only $7.15 with free shipping.  :o

I bought one of those last two copies from the seller on ebay. Thanks for the tip on the price and free shipping. Was anyone else surprised by the texture of the cover? Mine feels like a fine grain sandpaper. I've owned a lot of magazines over the years but never had a cover with this kind of texture?

Yeah.  Me, too.

At first, I thought it had caught some overspray of paint or something.  Then I realized it was perfectly even all over.  Never had a magazine cover like it before.

Same here. I have over 3K monster mags and it's the first time I've encountered that texture. Weird.

Life Magazine just issued it's own "200 Years of Frankenstein" issue.  It retails for $13.95.

Here's a look at the magazine:
