Title: NEW FOR HALLOWEEN - 2018
Post by: Monsters For Sale on July 26, 2018, 12:13:03 AM

Target Stores are listing some Halloween things at their Online Catalog already.

I don't recall seeing these items last year:

      Halloween - Skull & Crossbones  - Target - 2018 -  10.00 Dollars

As stated, this will be released Aug. 21, and is already available for "pre-order".

Here are two more items that will be released on Aug. 21:

Halloween - Lifesize Werewolf Skeleton - Target - 2018 -  45.00 Dollars

Halloween - Mad Lab - Target - 2018 -  35.00 Dollars

The Mego dolls are listed under "Mego".  Some are for sale, most are listing as "coming soon".  The Mego Dracula was not listed, yet.

Remember, Target will deliver orders that total at least $35.00 for free.  I sometimes save myself a trip to the store by getting a couple small items like this and having them toss some chips or canned goods, etc. to qualify for the free shipping.  I hate going to big stores and having to park really far away.  (Besides, they always put the Halloween stuff as far away from the entrance a possible.)

I know, these Halloween items are dopey.  But stores are starting to schedule releases.  The craft stores like Michaels, etc. should get stuff on shelves earliest.

Keep an eye out and report what you find here!

I think the MAD LAB is kinda funny!  ;D

Who thinks animals have "ear bones" as part of their skulls?

That Mad Lab is really cool!  And that werewolf skeleton sent my mind instantly to the MST3K episode "Werewolf", which had a similar size and quality skeleton. (free to watch on Youtube for those who are curious - "Keep circulating the tapes!")

I heard Michael's already has some Halloween stuff, but I haven't been able to get in yet to check it out.

There is the fantastic rabbit skeleton at JoAnn Fabrics that has bone ears!  It's amazing!

' Nice, unusual find with an intentional retro vibe!

Stopped in Micheal's the other day, not too much out yet of interest, just the standard assortment of skulls and bats. BUT - these "mermaid skeletons" are new to me.  But at $17, these are definitely a wait-till-50%-off item.  And they are the perfect size to wrap up and customize into Fiji Mermaid gaffs.

Hey, those ARE cool!

Werewolf and Mermaid skeletons.  Never saw those last year.

They should do a Cyclops skull now.

Classic Monster animatronics.  Like the Frankie, not really a fan of the Dracula.

I appreciated seeing them anyway. I wasn't trying to be negative, just trying to interject a tad of levity into the proceedings. Thought about trotting out the old "Oars-For-Boating" shtick but didn't want to go overboard.  ;)  :D

I was looking at these (online) and noticed that they come in two sizes: 16 inches and 30 inches.  I think the 30-inches would be a cool item to display at a  seaside bar, seafood café or fish store.

Sixteen sounds a bit small.

Haven't seen these listed for stores or Amazon, yet.  But there are numerous listings on eBay now.  One eBay seller states they will not be available to ship until August 10th.  eBay prices are in the $60 - $70 range.  Bet they will be a lot cheaper if Walmart or BigLots carry them.

Checked their site.

Big Lots sells them for $25.00 - but they don't offer free shipping until an order reaches $99.00.

Home Depot is listing this 5 ft. Skeleton as an exclusive.  Not just painted with glow paint, looks to be molded in glow plastic and have light-up eyes..

If the price seems high, maybe you could put it on your items to try to get from after-Halloween sales - to be used next year.

I don't care for them, but I am posting this here because the Frank at least has his "bolts" in the correct locations.  Universal might not like that.

I got one of these (in store) last year for half off a few days before Halloween. The regular skelly's were sold out but they had quite a few of the glow ones. And they do glow well. Very bright LED eyes.

We stopped in to Big Lots Sunday the 12th and they were all set up w/ Halloween. Dragon Skeleton is back, actually a number of different skeleton figures. Had a nice Lantern-holding phantom that looks like it will be easy to replicate. Also a creepy ghost girl that would look good in a haunted cemetery.

Dollar Tree has some cool junk for cheap, you know...a buck!

I think these ghosts are neat.

I bought some last year and a few more this year. They have color changing lights and make a loud wailing sound. They remind of the blowmold toys we had in the '60s and '70s by their look (only the old ones didn't light up or make sounds, of course).

Dollar Tree also has witches that light up and cackle, and cool little plastic lanterns that light up. They also have plastic spiderweb bowls that make fun candy dishes or help with displaying some monster items.

My wife found this Frankenstein bust at HomeGoods yesterday. The bolts in the neck and the weathered look sold it. The brand is Broomstick Blvd (see tag). It was $14.99. It has three modes: (1) Off, (2) eyes light up constant red, and (3) a mode where the eyes blink red and it makes a cackling sound (but only one time in this mode - it doesn't keep repeating, you have to turn the switch again to make it keep doing it). I'm just using it as a book end so I don't care about the light up eyes or sounds.

I like the Monsterville items very much. 2017 marked a high point in Halloween offerings because of the Monsterville stuff IMO. Look for those products to increase on the secondary market in the coming years, especially if we get no more Monsterville. Anyone interested who still needs any of those items for their collection should try to get them before too long because there are still low prices for them on eBay if one is patient and shops around. Monsterville bargains will probably be few and far between in a few years.

Welcome to the UMA, Skorpius!  :)

Thanks for the links! Although, Halloween without Universal Monsters holds little interest for me. If I can't squeeze a Creature or two out of the holiday, it's kind of a bust.  ;D

Meijer has put out their Halloween stickers and greeting cards.  I picked up a set of Universal Studios monsters stickers based on their "little Monsters" designs.  They had an officially licensed greeting card featuring Frankenstein's Monster with original artwork, too.

The Monsterville items were really exceptional. The little 5 dollar Screamers were beautifully sculpted and fun to play with. The domes were fantastic, as well. The Karloff Mummy head still blows me away. What a great item for only $25. Speaking of $25, that Creature costume was also top- notch. Like HH  said, get em while you can. You won't regret it.

Yeah, buddy. I ended up getting the 3 domes and Mummy head, 3 screamers, Creature costume and extra Creature mask as well as the Frankenstein mask, make-up kit, Drac teeth, Frankie make-up, and I even bought the overpriced Mummy gauze just to have the set. I usually don't buy kid's costumes and make-up items but these were cool enough to spring for. I tacked the masks to the wall and they look great displayed like that. I was really hoping we'd get more Monsterville items this Halloween. Maybe something else really nice will pop up. That Monsterville stuff was a pleasant Halloween surprise.

Yeah...I'm trying to get behind more of that stuff... I revisited the Super 7 thread to refresh me on it. The "Soapies" I'm definitely interested in, and maybe the candy buckets (Creature certainly). I'm just not much into 3.75" figures. If they had some cool playsets for them like a Rita with Creech, Kay, and the gang, then I could get into the figures. I mean, that's the best reason for 3.75" figures to exist is for cool playsets and vehicles. That was the main reason for the 3.75" Star Wars and G.I. Joe figures from back in the day- playsets and vehicles! The other S7 stuff leaves me either lukewarm or plain uninterested- shoes, pennants, hair paste.  :blank:

It would also be great if you could easily get the stuff relatively inexpensively like the Monsterville stuff was at Target. I'm not paying out the wazoo for any of that stuff, even the Soapies. Hopefully the stuff I do want will be reasonably priced.

That said, I'm glad other folks are excited about the S7 offerings. Hope they get what they want.

I went through all of them and found The Creature, Frankenstein, The Bride and Dracula.

Since they are licensed, I'll probably throw a Creature into my next amazon order.

I don't like the calendar. I wouldn't buy it, BUT I am very pleased that somebody decided to make a calendar with the Universal Monsters on it. It doesn't harm me personally if they make merchandise that I don't want to buy. Maybe someone else wants to. Maybe it gets a kid interested in the Universal Monsters. Maybe it helps make the Monsters relevant again and actually tie them to Universal. Maybe Universal decides to push the Universal Monsters more. It's not a bad thing. It isn't as though the Sideshow and Super 7's of the world will start exclusively producing figures that look like that calendar.

I don't think DC Comics fans freak out like this when someone makes merchandise that doesn't exactly replicate the original look of Batman in 1939. I don't hear anyone moaning about how Batman doesn't wear blue skivvies anymore. Disney fans don't freak out when Mickey Mouse doesn't look identical to Steamboat Willie. Spiderman was originally black and red in 1962. Iron Man looks very different in this Marvel cinematic universe than he did in his 1963 debut.

I think Universal Monster fans need to lighten up by and large and allow the Universal Monsters to become relevant to this CENTURY.

I don't know.

I worry that they will make more dreck like this that diehard fans won't want to buy.  And when it doesn't sell, they will take that to mean that no one cares about the Classic Monsters anymore.  Then other planned merchandise will lose its backers and product lines dry up.

The only monster in the calendar that looks at all close to the screen version is the Creature - because it doesn't have a recognizable actor's face and Universal or the manufacturer can save on licensing fees.

Images can be very stylized and still look undeniably like the actors who portrayed the monster.  These generic approximations aren't clever caricatures of the actors, they are deliberately designed to avoid looking anything like them for the sole purpose of saving money.

I don't want to buy something that is TRYING not to look like the monsters I want to collect.

I'm not a buyer.

The problem is this style guide stock art was adopted before the deal with Karloff.  After they closed the deal with Karloff, there should have been all new art commissioned.

This art is from 2002.  2002.  It is hardly relevant, new, or updated for modern audiences.  It is the same as it was back in the early 2000s.  Why has this art stuck?  It is the ugliest and worst art Universal has ever had in the style guide.  The 1997 art was amazing, far superior to this with actual Karloff and Chaney likenesses and alternate versions (Strange) when neither could be used.  It is unforgivable that the Universal Monsters have not received an update since then.  I thought we were good in 2008 when they released the brand new party supplies.  I know Lugosi had another falling out with Universal after that, and I know Chaney had a problem after that too, but they could have kept the Karloff art at least... or commissioned all new art to use when Karloff's image couldn't be used, as there are limitations, but it's probably just on Halloween candy and food promotions.

Exactly.  This is what will happen.  Who has a good number/address/email for the folks responsible for merchandising the Universal Monsters?  We need to tell them that this s***** stock art needs to be revamped.

D.C., Marvel, Disney, etc. characters have been reinvented (and their fan base has botched about it) for actual use other than merchandising; Universal just tries (horribly) to reinvent their characters for purely marketing demographics.  If a child were to like what he sees on that calendar they'd be hard pressed and probably disappointed in finding out these characters, at least that depiction of them, doesn't exist in any other form besides some graphics slapped on cups or toy vehicles.

Like I said...

Universal doesn't force manufacturers to use these images. They don't. That isn't how it works (anywhere). I do licensing. Everyday. Here's what happened.

Whatever company produces these calendars had a marketing guy say "let's make a monster calendar!".

They eventually ran that by the legal team and they said "are we infringing any IP if we use Frankenstein and Dracula and these other monsters? Yes, ... maybe..."

The legal team advised the company to get a license through Universal. They did so. The COMPANY selected from the Universal portfolio of licenseable renditions of the Universal Monsters. The company selected this version. It's what they thought would sell to their targeted demographic. Probably kids who aren't keen on black and white images from the 30's. And that's how it works.

It in no way forces another company to utilize this same style. Probably why no one has used it since the early 2000's. They use what they think will sell. Meanwhile this same year other company's are doing greeting cards of the monsters using pictures from the movie and people complain they're not doing anything new. Super 7 came out with some killer stuff. A lot of it, and more to come.  Everything Universal Monsters does not need to be a collectors item for adults.

If they don't target an audience other than the 50 and up crowd the Universal Monsters will die. If that's what you want great for you but that's the reality.

I don't know.

I worry that they will make more dreck like this that diehard fans won't want to buy.  And when it doesn't sell, they will take that to mean that no one cares about the Classic Monsters anymore.  Then other planned merchandise will lose its backers and product lines dry up.

And yet when Adam Sandler does a tribute series to the Classic Universal Monsters, it does quite well at the box office.  Universal themselves are the problem here. Even when it came to "Mockingbird  Lane", they wanted to avoid the classic look of the old monsters. But let anybody but Universal attempt a tribute, depend on their legal department letting those doing the tribute know what they must avoid doing.

And yet, I, in my incorrigible dotage still refuse to buy what I consider crap.

I agree. The classic monsters should be aimed at adults. It's not like little kids are screaming for mediocre versions of classic monsters. I think they might settle for well done versions.  By goofing up the likenesses, you automatically exclude your biggest consumer base (the adults with money). The new Mego Dracula is the best of both worlds...an inexpensive toy and an adult collectible.

Universal makes it clear that when licensing their monsters, you as the licensee, will pay More for the Classic (Likeness) Monsters, (those available at any time), and you will pay much Less for their Generic cartoon crap!  It is the licensee's choice as to what they can afford, or understand what will sell.  Again this is stipulated from Universal's top lawyers who in fact created the generic looking monsters as a way for Universal to keep All profits from these licensing, and do not split, or share profits with any of the actors estates.

I am still saddened at the apparent lack of support for the "Dead On" likeness of the Karloff Frankenstein- Hallmark Ornament received!
Too many years have past to think they will continue any further Universal Monsters themes.  Lots of love for Super 7 items, some deservedly so.
But to think what Hallmark could have continued to do with these true Classic Monster 'Likeness' pieces boggles my mind !  Hallmark does not shy away from any true film likeness sculpts on any of their film pieces!    *sigh*

Universal DOES control what artwork is available to businesses.  There is certain artwork that has been permanently retired, like the 1991 images.

This is also the most complete set of artwork Universal offers up, as the 1997 stock art, with actor likenesses, has fewer poses and such.  It also bypasses the Karloff license, as MrDark has mentioned.  I'm saying this stock art needs to be put to bed like the 1991 images were.  It needs to go and needs to be revamped.

The 1997 stock art is probably still available as it has been seen on the Revel Models.  If nothing else, it should replace this option.  Period.

Yeah, kids hate monsters.  Hotel Transylvania has probably been a devastating failure for Sony. As an aside, I'm pretty confident no kid has willingly played with a Mego anything in my lifetime.

Why would they get rid of it if people are willing to pay them money to use it? You can question whether it hurts the UM brand but right now all they care about is a quarterly earnings report. A company that makes calendars wanted a cheap license for some monsters and they got it. I'm baffled by the uproar when Universal licenses something that is not appealing to the collectors market.

What is baffling is a Studio that goes out of it's way to tarnish its own brand, less  the small change added to the bottom line.
'The Black Tower' (noted building in LA, housing the Uni Lawyers) created the Generic monsters, in response to Sara Karloff vs Universal.
Even after settling the lawsuit, they continue pushing the generic characters, and weakening the brand.

Universal has lost control of the Frankenstein image some time ago.  There are so many non-likeness versions available, cartoons, toys, ads- any company can make a character with a flat head, and bolts and everyone knows that is Frankenstein's monster.  Not much more effort in design offerings of other classic monsters, like Wolf Man, Dracula, Mummy etc. that can't be touched by the Uni Black Tower suits, cause it don't look like their brand.
Even the dreaded 'D' (as in Disney, don't mention them in Uni/Blk Tower presence-Thank You), sells Mickey, and Goofy as Frankenstein figs/dolls etc.
Why Universal adds to this mash-up of branding is bad business to me.

They fully admit, their generic designs do not sell.  They make a small amount on the license, and then the licensee, and themselves see no further profits.
Universal licensing loses a ton of profits each year-starting with Back to School season, they could release school notebooks, binders, etc with Monster Likeness covers, etc.  These could be sold to stores as items for Back to School-through the Halloween season!  Adding a few more designs as the Halloween season approaches- Uni could go to retailers/companies, and makes a special deal for these releases.  Uni Lic did exactly this when they approached Don Post Studios to make their monster masks, and again when they were pushing the 60's Munsters brand, and Post Studios asked to re-up and continue the original monster masks license.

Its this total lack of caring of the Classic Monster Brand that is so galling!  It is their property, but the duplicity in helping to destroy it, and then turn around and sue others for using their copy-righted characters is well...baffling.   D, er uh, Disney would never compromise their brand like this, can't really think of any other studio, or company that does, come to think of it.

Yeah, that's all been rehashed over, and over, and over. My whole point is one calendar that 99.9% of UM fans will never see in real life is getting a lot of rage. It seems UM fans crap all over almost every Universal Monster item that is released for one reason or another. It seems most of the time the complaint is the product sucks. If the product itself doesn't suck then the color scheme sucks. If the product and color scheme are good then the packaging sucks. If the packaging doesn't suck then the retailer selling it sucks. If that's all good then the manufacturer release schedule sucks. Which of course leads us back to Universal licensing sucks. So much outrage. I think I just need to take a sabbatical of sorts.

There are Hotel Transylvania toys available for the kiddies. I'm sure they wouldn't want them if they didn't resemble the characters in the movie. That's understandable. What I don't comprehend, is why someone would so vociferously defend mediocrity. We pay good money for this stuff, and don't want to settle for generic likenesses and green Frankenstein outfits. Is that being unreasonable?

I think it's being very reasonable.

We certainly have the right to express our opinions on a monster message board of all places...that's what it's here for. If Uni didn't have such a long track record of questionable (or just plain tasteless) marketing decisions then so many of us wouldn't have so many negative comments regarding them. I don't understand the blind defense of dreck like the new calendar either. It's somewhat amusing and baffling at the same time.

I love Universal Studios as an idea (the history and the heritage), but I am mystified by the modern incarnation (the questionable practices and corporate myopia as concerns their older properties).

It's not just their attitude to the Classic Monsters licensing.  They even do it to themselves.  With an area of some 400+ acres, the Powers That Be could think of no better place to build Whoville than cheek-by-jowl with and in full view of the Bates Motel - sans even creative landscaping to divide the separate worlds.

Universal could put a stop to lousy product by updating their generic stylebook monster images (even generic could be closer in tone) and demanding that private impressions adhere somewhat closer to the classic original designs - if they cared.

Universal Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights for 2018 is incorporating a "Monster Maze".  Here is a trailer.

      https://youtu.be/UIHrS6V2RA0

If this is how they treat their own official, in-park Monsters' images, how little must they care about what others do with them?

Why would they get rid of it if people are willing to pay them money to use it?

That about sums it up.  People settling for mediocrity.

They SHOULD get rid of the art because it is 20 years old and NO UM stock art has ever been available for use THAT long before this.  They literally stopped caring about the Monsters 20 years ago and never bothered to update the images for the characters in their oldest brand, something they did every 3 to 5 years in the 1990s.

Universal set the precedent and then stopped.  They stopped bothering to market their monsters shortly after introducing these images.  That's why they are still on the books, because they hardly ever get used.  The 1997 art was on everything from Nabisco cookies to Jack In the Box bags.  The 1991 art was all over Pepsi, Doritos, and Mars Candies.  This art got a few cardboard displays in the Pepsi aisles in the early 2000s and then... nothing.  It disappeared, much like the classic monsters themselves.

If they are trying to reinvigorate the monsters, you would think they would at the very least update the images, freshen the look.  Do something other than just dig up some images from 20 years ago and call it good.  That is the problem.

As someone who fell in love with the Universal Monsters through the marketing of the monsters in the early 1990s, I take this very personally.  It's more than just having collector-friendly merchandise.  It's about marketing these characters in the best possible way, which Universal hasn't done for decades.

Went to Target today to see the cards.  They are nice.  Passed on them for now...  Went across the street to a Kroger-owned grocery store.  Also looked at their cards... and BEHOLD!  The most gorgeous Universal Monsters stock art you have ever seen since the 1960s...

This is what I am talking about, people...  RESPECT!  The wonderful stock art inside the card came about in 2008 when the party supplies hit the market.  The gorgeous portrait on the front was developed a few years later and was released on a sticker set from Hallmark.  Pretty much the only time we've seen it.  This artwork is what should be out there.  Period.  All of the artwork, whether they have actor likeness rights or not, should be updated to this standard.  The cheap-o 2002 stock art should be put to bed permanently.  This is what we should be seeing on every product.  Even if they don't have Lugosi rights, get a Dracula that is as detailed as this, a Creature, and Wolf Man too.  This is what I'm talking about, people.

The cool graphic inside the card was first seen on the 2008 Window Cling set.  I thought, finally in 2008, we were moving beyond the 2002 art, but then Lugosi and Universal had another falling out, and I guess it sent us backward.

The weird thing about this card is it was the only one of its kind, placed in front of a totally different card (a "to master from dog" card).  There were no other Universal Monsters, no other cards like this one, and there was no place where it logically would go.  It was just stuck in this random spot waiting for me.  I looked all around the card section at all the various Halloween displays.  Nada.  It's weird.  It didn't even have an envelope.  I wonder if there are other cards out there like this and where they might be...  Any place that carries American Greetings might have them.  I'd imagine we could at least get a Mummy like this.

Target did have a similar card, but it was in black and white and used the photo of Karloff in this same pose instead.  It was nice.  I liked it better than the color-splotch ones they also had at Target, but it had nothing on this baby.

I don't normally comment on another artists work— but that calendar art is bad digital art— bad in almost every respect.  Compositions are bad, anatomy is bad, rendering is bad, lighting is bad, color choices, proportions, all of it.  Were this done by one of my college students in 2002 I would have told them to do a complete redo or take a fail.  Take it through to what we now accept for digital art and this is an embarrassment.

On to the artists defense, its possible they were tasked with an overbearing committee insisting they get the Universal "flavor" without infringing on likeness rights and sometimes you can be art directed to death.   My wife is currently working on something for a major film property with a well known company and she's in the early stages of it, but I've been around long enough to know that the reason these companies usually pay well (or you should charge more than normal) is because you're going to be doing endless revisions and not always for the positive.

They may have also had a ridiculous deadline.  I used to criticize Vince Colleta's inking when I was a kid and then I found out that a lot of the time he had only a weekend to get a whole book done, that puts it in a new light.  It's still bad, and it still shouldn't be published but its not always the artists fault.

With this calendar I agree 100% we should get better than this.  Nice that its an easy pass and do I really want a Monster Calendar hanging in my house anyway?  But if they're going to make one don't put something like this out.

Vinnie may have been a bit distracted during some of those all-nighters as well. I've read accounts from other Marvel Bullpen members that Vince would sometimes turn those rushed inking sessions into parties involving several female friends. He was no Joe Sinnott when it came to the work but, as you stated, the circumstances make those chicken scratches look a lot better...well, more understandable anyway.

Dislike the generic art on the pint glass itself, much rather have the art featured on the side of the box.
That art, not liked by some here on UMA, is from the same artist (Tom Whalen) who's work/style was featured on
licensed Mondo Uni Monsters posters.   I believe Uni Studios had him do the current style guide Monster Art, that is used on hang tags, jewelry board backing, and as seen here, boxes.  If not that, then some one sure aped his style for Uni's new package logo designs.

Here is another card from Target that I have not seen posted here yet.
I got this one with the other versions noted here.  It is a Licensed Uni Monsters card from Carlton Cards also.
It was not placed with the other cards, but just below in the more kiddie style cards.

The inside of the card has the oft seen B/W pub shot of Karloff as the Monster, posing with his pleading hands, and sad open mouth.
In his hand a Halloween candy pumpkin container is placed, with the saying in the card 'Hope this Halloween makes you feel Alive'.

The card itself is a cut-out of Karloff's head, with the bottom lettering...Cool!

Not sure how things are looking for Uni Monster Halloween stuff this year.  We did get pretty spoiled last year with all the great stuff at Target!

Not thrilled by anything I have seen so far.  I haven't spent a dime.

Target has all the stuff out or at least has the price tags out, so I looked around for a while looking for any mention of Monsterville. Nothing.

I don't get the reference.

But, we have just begun September - so maybe there will be a couple surprises in the next month.  Maybe some really cool generic Halloween decorations have yet to be discovered by the UMA.

Oh.

For me, his appeal as an actor had reached rock bottom years before that.  I did know there was a sub basement yet to come.  I find him as hard to watch as Keanu Reeves.

I truly believe Monsterville could have truly been something great had it not been for the TC fiasco.  I'd wager it was intended to be the "theme" for Target stores last Halloween, but -- after the flop -- they scrapped it.  They canceled the line all together, apparently, last December.

Honestly. Most people could give a crap about Universal Monsters. It's the hardcore/diehard fans who love Uni-Monsters.

Last year, I asked a sales clerk when Target's Hallowe'en will be displayed, almost every day.
I am sure they thought I was crazy. Finally!
There it was, Universal Monsters. I was ecstatic
to see something that I never thought would ever be in any department store. Especially in Target stores.

But, alas. The Uni-Monsters masks and costumes just collected dust. With the exception of a few decorations. I do recall a child asking his parents
who are those monster costumes.....and the reply was: I don't know.

There are a lot of die-hard monster collector fans who are physically unable to sit through a silent movie.

For today's kids, black-and-white movies with over-wrought acting from stage trained performers are an equivalent.

Someday, 2D movies may seem quaint to audiences.

I will turn 72 in October.  I had a B&W TV 'til I was 10.  Most of my favorite movies were filmed in B&W.

I have friends my age who refuse to watch anything that is not in color today.

Yeah, I'm with you, Mike. There are lots of silent classics that are cornerstones of Horror and SF, and while there might be a few fans of classic talkie monster flicks who don't like the silents I'll bet the vast majority of those fans hold the silent films that laid the foundation of the genre in high regard. MFS must know a few unusual "classic monster fans".

I have to agree. I've been to many horror cons, where hot 20 something year old girls are flashing Nosferatu, Cesare, Phantom,  etc. tattoos. Im sure that not all of them have seen the films, but they know the historical importance of the images. Some (I talked to), were fans of the films. Others had seen them in magazines or horror docs, and wanted them on the arms, back, breasts, etc.

I happen to be one of them. I despise, DESPISE silent movies. I first saw the Cabinet of Dr Caligari in a 2007 film class I had in college and I could barely stay awake. I remember in my write up after the showing saying something to the effect that I was grateful for the experience (it was my first silent film) and I appreciate its cultural significance, but I can't say I "enjoyed it."

I realize that silent films can be an acquired taste. Many of the silent "horror" movies are just melodramas with some macabre elements. The "classic" horror film that most of us love really didn't start until the 1930's. However, I do like silent films; if you can view them for what they are: an evolutionary step in the genre, some of them can be quite fascinating.

I checked Target last night but no UniMon Greeting Cards and no Mego Monsters. Our Target no longer even has a Mego display.

On a different note, I did pick up this fine selection of brewskies at Target so it wasn't a wasted trip. Mmmm... Pumpkin Ale.  ;)

The Karloff head sculpt on this $5 Frankenstein hanging ghoul at Five Below is actually pretty decent.  Maybe you could make use of the head and trash the rest.

I picked up one of these a few weeks ago and forgot to post; as far as I know the monkey skeleton is a new addition to the animal skeleton line.  I think it would definitely go well with a mad scientist theme; I want to pose mine a little more dramatically and wire it so he stays that way.

I'm not sure what's up with the dimensions in the description? "7.25 inches (H) x 5.25 inches (W) x 4 inches (D)".  Even seated (like the photo) the thing is a foot tall; standing it measures 21 inch.  The tail is bendable/positionable as well; the hips/shoulders don't have rotating positionability though like the human skeletons.

I've been keeping a rolling "Halloween Wish List" on my phone to remind me of cool stuff.  The blow up Sandworm is definitely top of the list, but I haven't seen one in-store yet.  I wasn't aware of the Super 7 stuff, and some of that is pretty neat too.

I guess there's a new wave of Pop Monsters, I saw this exclusive Frankenstein at Walgreens. (I don't care for him, but the Creature and Metaluna Mutant I saw on the back of the box are cool)

Walmart doesn't really seem to have much in the way of cool decor this year, but I did like these HEAVY terracotta retro pumpkins.  They have a large opening in the back for candles or lights or what have you.

Kohl's has this nice light up jack o'lantern, but the $30 or $40 price tag is far too steep for me

Here's an in-hand pic of the Target skeleton monkeys.  The pricing isn't bad and they certainly have a few uses.

Lowes has these haunted books, the middle two groan and slide in and out and tilt.  I later saw them at Big Lots as well.  Lowes also has these nice metal jack o'lantern... planters(?) cauldrons(?)

Home Depot has these bags of 3 skulls for $10, which isn't bad considering the jaws are hinged and you don't have to get a bunch of other useless bones to get some skulls.

The rest of these are neat things I saw at Michael's. I've been using 40% and 50% off coupons to pick up items on my way home from work.  I already got the retro "Cauldron Polish" bottle and the large (like big metal coffee can sized) "Dried and Salted Bat Wings" canister.

I wonder if Disney is aware this resin spell book is biting their Poison Apple artwork

Hidden amongst the sprigs of halloween foliage I saw these venus fly traps... could be useful for something

These labeled skulls and palmistry hands are cool

New for the DIY molds are this cat o'lantern and jack o'lantern

The glass slides on this hanging skeleton thing look convincingly like x-rays

GID coated skull mugs to hold your "Boos"

Simple hanging psychic sign

This metal venus flytrap would be neat potted as a prop

Finally, this was such a cool and simple craft idea: just balloons wrapped in spiderwebs and dotted with spiders.  I passed on the $6 price tag and skipped next door to Dollar Tree and got a bag of balloons and a bag of webbing.  Then at walmart i picked up a 98cent bag of spider rings.  I haven't put them together yet, but I think a marble dropped in each balloon would add some good weight.

What he said. I am a big fan of craft beer and will be looking out for that sampler pack. The Spruce ale is probably not going to be good unless they did it right. I have had quite a few X-mas ales that literally tasted like a X.mas tree,

And alot of you guys are right  that alot of the younger people either don' like or have no clue about the Uni Monsters. Back when my kid was 9-10 tried to turn them on and did a mini marathon of a few of the classics including The Wolfman. They got the cold shoulder and were deemed as boring and dull. A year later we were watching movies together like Hell Raiser,Phantasm and Dawn of the Dead. They were glued to the screen. Go figure.
Also had this younger guy (age 30 or so)working on the dock with me and he overheard me talking about Karloff ,Frankenstein etc.
I asked him what he thought about Karloff. Had no idea who that was. I explained about the Uni monsters real quick and all he could say,Yeah, I think my Gramps used to watch those. :o
I guess it's fair . I have almost no clue who most  names are after late 1990's or so.

The skeletal bats have arrived -- Joy!    :D
In my mind's eye, I always saw Christopher Lee transmogrifying into one of these in the Hammer films!

Other than the odd flea market or Goodwill shelf, these dollar stores are about the closet thing I've seen to current versions of my beloved J J Newberry, Woolworth, and dime store Halloween/rubber monster offerings.  Sure, upwards of 80% of their yearly offerings are crap, but there ARE treats to be found & the nostalgia vibes are priceless.
Even the candies -- ranging from Mary Jane to PAL gum to fruity Tootsie Rolls -- are offerings ripped from another era.

No such store in California.  And not listed in their online catalog.

Do the cups have maker's info on the bottom?  Maybe they can be ordered from somewhere else.

I'd like a Frank cup for $8.00 - but I won't pay an eBay scalper $20 for a cup + $10 for shipping.

We've got a few Meijers within a ten mile radius, wifey loves the place.  Hold your bread until I'm out and about this weekend....I'll bring the ipad and grab a few pics of their offerings, if you're into it?

Cool cups, that is the Strange Monster, so a must have.
The Bride's face color matches the back ground color, and her head disappears.
Perhaps she took up with the Invisible Man, and learned a few tricks.

But, the original retail price was $25.00 for the set of four.

Blow molds are almost non-existent in brick and mortar stores, but my wife spotted two at our local Ruler Foods, a Kroger discount chain. They are battery operated, but they definitely have that old school vibe. I picked up this one, but passed on the cat dressed as a ghost for now. I'll probably get it before the season is over.

Also, these super-articulated skeletons are really popular among the Mego community, because they are in the same scale (just a tad shorter than your average Mego). They have been showing up at Big Lots for $5, but I found them at Ruler for $2.99.

Yeah, those skeletons are fantastic!  Nice and rubbery, too.  They are essentially knockoffs of the 'Pose' skeletons, only much larger.
Our BigLots have them for $5, as well, along with a similarly styled dino.

There is no such thing.

Universal does not promote the products of their licensees.  You kinda have to find each individual manufacturer - and they are not great about having sites and product listings.  Many do not ever advertise their items.  Instead, they sell exclusively through various retail stores who don't always list these smaller items in their online catalogs.

We try to alert each other about what we find in stores or at toy shows, toy stores, etc. here at the UMA.

On the UMA homepage is a category of threads called "Modern Monster Toys".  That's your best bet for finding threads about what's new.  Some posts are gathered under "New For Halloween...", some toy lines are given individual threads.  You need to go through them all and familiarize yourself with what is there.

And, be sure to call our attention to anything cool you find on your own.

Have fun tat the UMA.  There are some great people here.  Be sure to use the SEARCH feature at the top of the Home page to located older threads about movies/toys/games that interest you.

(*at*)Monsters For Sale -- Regarding the Frank mug (or any other goodies), just let me know before Friday night.  Wifey will be going in multiple Meijers for deli/butcher/fish/produce clearance, and I already asked her to grab a few pics of any UM stuff & grab a few mugs.  Not looking to 'turn a profit', just pay for what you want + shipping.
(Heads-up:  I don't screw around with shipping -- heavy gauge tape seal, bubble wraps, etc. -- so it's probably gonna run you a few bucks to do it right.)

Same goes for any member in good standing; just PM me and I'll do my best this weekend.   ededed

That's been an ongoing problem. The Creature is the single most collected Universal monster. He is the guaranteed seller in any classic monster line. He needs no actor license. Why not emphasize him, rather than exclude or underrepresent him. The Creature should be the star of any Uni toy line.

Tecnically Universal own's Karloff's likeness, but you're probably right about the creature's popularity. Universal doesn't do enough with their classic monsters. Sometimes, it seems they only hold on to the rights  to the classic monsters to prevent anybody else from doing something with them.

Hear hear!

The Gill-man hit the scene years before my birth, yet I've always been drawn to him.  Believe it or not, my earliest memories of him aren't the films -- I first saw his face on a huge Halloween cutout & in my aunt's sewing room.   Lights low, shag carpet, oscillating fan, and me staring intently at that aquarium figure while being lulled to sleep.  For all I knew, the bubbling and percolating sounds were coming from HIM.   :o
A bit later I got a very neat puzzle, one depicting him in the underwater cave, arms outstretched.

I need much more Metaluna, Mole Man, and Hyde merchandise, as well.

From the looks of those he's better off for the lack of it.

Have the Palmers or MPCs ever been rereleased?
No Palmers, but they're crankin' out Pop-Top repops to beat the band south of the border. It's easy to tell the repops though by the way the plastic looks (and smells, no doubt). I think a few sets of MPC 2 1/2" Weird Monsters were repopped back in the '90s in non-glow green but I don't think those molds have been actively used for years. If the 2 1/2" molds were in Mexico we'd probably be seeing them follow their Pop-Top big brothers across the border in droves.

Say, you're a playset person, check out this huge bin of 50s-70s stuff I found a couple weeks back:
(Some nice, heavy-gauge PVC & rubber figures among them.  Love the smell.)

Some neat highlights -- Sgt. Rock, Patton, Daniel Boone, Legionnaire, etc...

Also, how about these Tim-Mee guys?  So cool.  'Repurposed' Marvel characters, heh.

Some cool figures there, UT.

I'm mostly into Monster and Dinosaur related playsets including Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and some Superhero. For something I had as a kid I might step outside those boundaries however, like the MPC Beetle Bailey Camp Swampy playset. I'm almost out of room (been saying that for years, but for something I really want I somehow find the room for it  ;)), and vintage playsets are usually very expensive to put together these days, so I focus on my favorite genres.

I'll be going there tomorrow -- pics incoming!  :D

You can get those in big tubes/buckets from SCS Direct. The big ones usually contain 90-100 figures and are $20-$30 each, so the price per figure is less. They also have Robots, Astronauts, and several other sets.

I grabbed a bag of these from an eBay seller a few months ago. 14pc Zombie set for $4 w/free shipping.

Thanks, fellas, but I found a half dozen of 'em within 5 miles of my house when I checked the store locator on their website. This area seems to be crawlin' with 'em.  ;D

I stopped by one and grabbed some junk on the way to Wendy's and a #2 combo. Got some Skeletons, Mummies, and light-up lantern and spider. I'll hit more tomorrow, along with Dollar Tree, and grab some of those skeleton spiders and scorpions and some other $ stuff. These cheap rack toys may not be as cool as the ones from the '60s/'70s but they're in that same spirit so I still get a blast out of buying them around Halloween. As little as money is worth now it's hard to believe they can sell a blister carded set of 10 of any kind of figure these days for a buck. And, ya know, those Mummies and Skeletons aren't bad. Pretty sweet for cheap monster toys.  ;)

Yeah, I checked their website first and discovered the $1 stuff is only available in the stores. I've gotten so used to ordering everything online it seems weird to have to actually visit a store. It felt weird last year getting that Monsterville stuff in Target, too. Nice, though. Usually, for me, it's eBay, Amazon, or some other website like Severin Films or Kino Lorber. Honestly, it's hard to find much of anything I'm interested in by physically walking into a store anymore. How things have changed since the pre-internet days.

The Karloff head sculpt on this $5 Frankenstein hanging ghoul at Five Below is actually pretty decent.  Maybe you could make use of the head and trash the rest.

Yeah! I picked one of those up too! I don't know why but I was expecting it to have a remote. Spoiler, it does not.  You just flip it on and let it do its thing.  It generally hovers up and down, drifting around slightly.  There seems to be sensors on the bottom or something where it drops to the floor, then the ceiling, and then hangs out somewhere in between.  It does generate quite a bit of lift for itself, and things get exciting when it glances off something and gets some horizontal velocity going.  Totally uncontrollable, but totally enjoyable and entertaining.  I've spent $5 on worse things.

World Market doesn't have too much great this year (who knows maybe next year they'll have the Universal license back).  But I thought these Beistle style pieces were spiffy.

Just wanted to share these pics with you Halloween fiends - we carved our pumpkins the other night, and it's been 20 years since I've carved a jack o'lantern.  I wanted to do a scary face, and the girlfriend went with the Cheshire Cat.  If I'm being honest, mine isn't a original design, just Googled "scary jack o lantern" and used the first few pics for inspiration.  I'm very proud of how good it came out.

It looks terrorific!  :)

Brush lemon juice over all the exposed cuts and inside to help it last longer.

I got it. Thanks.

Hey...that annoying "verify you aren't a robot" crapola just tried to block me! Can we do something about that poppycock?

Thanks, gents! Ah! I didn't know about the lemon juice trick, but that totally makes sense.  Probably waited too long this time - but next year!

Immediately before I posted my above reply to you at 11:01. I tried to copy the emogee you provided and the dreaded Immunify iron fist threatened me with blockage unless I checked the box "I am no robot".

Thanks, Batman and Horror Man! (I knew The Batman would approve of a Halloween decor pic!)

At Spooky Empire last night I learned about this website: http://www.thesingingpumpkin.com/singing-pumpkins (http://www.thesingingpumpkin.com/singing-pumpkins)

The lip sync and stuff is hilarious. I stood there watching the demo grinning like an idiot.

I recommend clicking through all the different videos and packages - Werewolves of London is fun as is the Grim Grinning Ghosts.  Blue Moon is a riot too.  Holy cow this guy (or gal) nailed these!  I'm a mess at embedding video, but here's a couple teaser images:

I get this all the time.  After I get to the landing page with the all the monsters, I click to enter the forum.  It goes to a white page that says something about an error.  I refresh.  Sometimes I get to the forum, but sometimes I get the robot thing.  It just started a few months back.  Thought it was happening to everyone.
