What is everyone thinking with 4K, especially as it relates to your collections? People already dreading all the upgrades? Do you think it will be ultimately be worth it with it with some movies? And are you even ready to buy the Universal Movies in yet ANOTHER format?
I don't even have the blu ray legacy's yet!
I haven't even bought a BluRay player yet.
I'm very happy with my blu-ray player and the BDs that I have, but I'm also glad it plays my SDs and makes them look better with upscaling. I never intended to upgrade my whole collection, though certain films and shows I just had to (like the UNI Monsters and Outer Limits). To think about going around again with 4K seems a bit too much for me, though when the TVs and players come down in price I might get them as long as they upscale what I have. I heard that can vary though depending on different models.
Hell No! Most of my stuff is still on DVD. I've bought about 2 dozen bluray essentials (all-time favorites and new releases). What makes anyone think they will stop with 4k? I'll wait for 16k before I upgrade ( I should be dead by then ).
Frankly, I don't think I can tell the difference between a DVD and a Blu-ray, unless there was some restoration done in between. I buy movies I don't have on BD, but I ain't rebuying much, except the Universal movies.
I can certainly live with the DRACULA BD as my final version.
The only time I do a blu ray upgrade is if there has been restoration. Like Universal did. I don't care about 4k, I don't even know what it means. I am close to 50 (48.5). This year I get bifocals. Why do I care about uber improved quality when my eyes ain't what they used to be anyway? I can't see the additional pores on Jimmy Joe's nose anyhoo....so why bother, lol? :-[ :-[ 8)
I have bought some flicks on blu....but only because they never had a proper dvd release. Monster of Pierdas Blancas, Boy Who Cried Werewolf, Without Warning, House of Long Shadows....stuff like that. But sitting down and thinking to myself, "Yes...I must upgrade my copy of Dementia 13 to blu ray because the dvd just is not good enough?" Nope.
You only need that kind of clarity when you watch porn. Like most people here, only a third of my collection is dedicated to smut. Doesn't seem worth the upgrade.
If a film is restored and has an HD transfer it can still look amazing on good ol' dvd even though the film will not be true HD on the format. I still buy dvd but I also buy Bluray, if I find them for close to the same price as the dvd; no interest in 4k whatsoever.

Please exclude me from the "most people here" section. I have none, lol. N-O-N-E. Hidely Ho, neighbor.

...and here I have too much of the stuff. Maybe, I should send you a CARE package, neighbor. Don't want to be seen as greedy.
Uhm....uhm.....Better not. Wouldn't be prudent,lol.

This^
As of now I'm happy with my DVDs though I would like to see the extended cut of Son of Frankenstein included in the Frankenstein Legacy Set.
There are pluses to a Blu Ray player. They can make standard disks look even better. Plus, and this is a good one for me, they sure seem to play those pesky DVD-18's much better. I haven't encountered any freeze ups on them like I did with my old players. That includes the notorious Lugosi set.
I remember "8k" was touted at conventions a couple of years before anyone mentioned "4k", and then 8k Chatter was shushed. In the year before 4k arrived, the excuse of avoiding 8k topics was "the expense", "limited resources ie bandwidth (as is streaming was make or break 2k, 4k, etc.)" and there was probably panel-manufacturing doubts, too.
This all smacks of babysteps only to ensure at least one more purchase is required for the consumer in hopes they'll be scammed into purchasing the Next Thing, and not waiting on the Next Right Thing.
Personally, if I'm going to have to buy The White Album again, I really want about 12 new songs on it.

Like I said, I'm waiting for 16k before even considering an upgrade.

AND we want the 85-inch'ers to be around $400. Along with those 24tb hard drives at $129 each.

Hey-y0!
I've got a blu-ray player, but still collect mostly DVDs and only get blu-rays when there is a worthwhile restoration of the film that I am buying.
In the case of 4K, I'm not too familiar with the technology - but I get the feeling that it won't be worth much for (most) of the films that us fans like to watch. I think 4K is best for these newer ultra HD shot Hollywood films - but I could be wrong. I still prefer my old scratchy transfers on DVD most of the time - so I'm definitely not the right audience for 4K.
Same here.
I currently have the blu-rays and I don't plan to buy the movies again until they release the holographic, 3D, immersive, virtual reality versions of the films!!! ;D

Must also feature "Smell-O-Vision".
Well, I'm just happy with my "old-time" vhs, still works exellent, and, finding movies all the time at the local Goodwill outlet, and since it's an outlet, the price right now is 1.54 a pound, quite the bargain for those that seek!
I have the Essential Collection, and the Frankenstein and Wolf Man Legacy blu-rays. Honestly, I will not be buying 4K.
The Digital Bits recently ran this:
DRACULA 4K ON APPLE TV, UNI MONSTERS COMING TO UHD DISC ...
July 23, 2021 - 7:02 pm | by Bill Hunt
"... Universal Monsters fans may be pleased to learn that Tod Browning's Dracula (1931) is now available for purchase on iTunes/Apple TV in 4K UHD with HDR. And the SRP is just $4.99. It looks fantastic—the high dynamic range really does make a difference in subtle things, like shadow detailing, candle and moonlight luminance, Dracula's glowing white eyes, and the like.
As I mentioned in my review of the complete Universal Monsters Blu-ray Collection back in 2018, all of these films were remastered from new 4K scans. So potentially, they could all be made available in native 4K, both digitally and on disc. And in fact, we've had Dracula on our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits for many months now. Both Dracula and Frankenstein celebrate their 90th anniversaries this year. The Mummy turns 90 next year, while The Wolf Man celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2021.
So here the even better news: Our studio sources have informed us that Universal is indeed quietly preparing to release all four films on physical 4K Ultra HD in late September or early October in a Universal Monsters Classics Collection. The set is starting to appear for pre-order on select European retail sites, and we expect it to be announced here in the States in the weeks ahead. What we don't know yet is whether single-film 4K SKUs will be available immediately, or not until next year (as was the case with Universal's recent Hitchcock 4K set).
In any case Universal Monsters fans should have good reason to rejoice soon. Don't expect miracles in terms of the image quality upgrade over regular Blu-ray, but there should definitely be subtle improvements in fine detailing and again the HDR will make a real difference."
Most likely a pass for me mostly cause I don't have a 4K player anyways but I will throw this out there. Last chance Universal to give Frankenstein the audio treatment it rightly deserves!!
