Title: What was your favorite decade that you were alive for and why?
Post by: Creepy on March 17, 2018, 09:31:52 AM
I was born in 1964, grew up in the 70's, went to college in the early 80's, was married and started my family in the 90's.

I don't really have many memories of the 60's, except the moon landings, so I'll rule them out.

Being in college in the 80's was fantastic! I was in a fraternity that closely resembled Animal House, the music was amazing, the style, the girls, etc... Some of my favorite horror & sci-fi films are from the 80's; Friday the 13th, The Thing, The Fog, Escape from New York and more. But that isn't my favorite decade.

The 90's were a blur, raising kids, starting a family, and while I love it, its not my favorite.

My wife passed away in the mid-2000's so that's out for sure.

My favorite decade was the 70's!!! Growing up a monster kid in that time was so much fun. I watched The Ghoul on local T.V., Big Chuck and Hoolihan, Super Host, and Creature Feature. I had 3 horror hosts and a shock theater show that fed a steady diet of classic horror, sci-fi, and giant monsters!!

T.V. was great as well, there was reruns of classic Trek, Buck Rogers, Logan's Run, Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, Battlestar Galactica, and so many more.

I saw Star Wars 13 times in the theater and had all of the action figures. We got another King Kong, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Michael Myers in Halloween.

The best was my favorite series Planet of the Apes had 4 release in the 70's Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

Yep, my pick is the 70's!!

Favorite decade? The 1970s.

Reaason? I was in my 20s. I can't think of a better reason to make it my favorite!  ;D

OK, there was a lot of good movies and music, too.

It's  hard to choose between the late 60's and early 70's. The late 60's were a time of hope, even with Vietnam and all the civil rights struggles we still had Woodstock and the Apollo missions. The early 70's started out positive , but Watergate sort of brought the whole idea crashing down. When I talk to my kids about the key events in my life being fairly positive they shrug their shoulders and name 9/11 as their significant event (at least so far). I hope to live long enough to see them to experience something truly incredible and truly positive. Long live The Merry Marvel Marching Society , Marvelmania and Nightmare Theater!. Those institutions from '64 to '75 kept this monster kid very happy!

'Loved 4.5 yrs of college in the 80's.

Lots of music and so much going on. Not much new music that is exciting anymore.

Enjoyed playing in a rocking blues band for 2 years.

Met my wonder wifey as a senior in college and we are still rocking.

'Still playing both guitar and bass - rock, blues and other experimental crazy drum machine stuff.

I love the '60's & '70's for the music, popular culture, toys, TV, movies, & monsters. I was also a child then, & my happiness was looked after by others. Each decade of adulthood has brought it's own sunshine & sorrows, so I tend to see moments & events rather than years.

Well, for me, it's the 60's for sure, it was the best of times for me.  looking back, they were some of the happiest of times,  I went through many "life situations" then, but I can say, because of my youth at the time, I was able to "weather the storms" a lot better, bouncing back more quickly.  Sure, in 1969, at the end of the decade, I was only 15, but like the song says, "I was so much older then, I'm younger that that now".

Favorite Decade : the `70s. - The early part of the `70s I discovered the Warren magazines, which lead to all the other monster magazines. That decade I discovered Lovecraft and other writers. Great music, great collectables, and 1972 not only brought my first Warren mag ... but I first saw the movie that would effect my life forever ... the 1968 Planet Of The Apes.

Hi CreepysFan.  Yes, Planet of the Apes was great!!  But I liked the sequel better, Beneath the Planet of the Apes.  Back in the late 60's, many movies had an influence on me, exploitation films were many, Easy Rider opened my eyes to a few things, as well as Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, I liked the Billy Jack movies, made me actually take karate for a few years from the master here in Reading, George Dillman.  I liked all the crazy motorcycle gang movies as well as all the Steve Mcqueen movies, and also the movie "the 7-ups", and The French Connection.  Many many others too.

The '60s. I was born in '59 so I grew up loving monsters and dinosaurs in the '60s.

The early to mid '70s were great as well, and were very similar to the '60s. It seems like the big change came in 1977 with the popularity of Star Wars. Classic Monsters and Gothic Horror were phased out and replaced with Sci-Fi. Even Famous Monsters Of Filmland featured mostly SW. I liked the first 3 SW films but I hated to see the things I loved the most fade away. Of course Horror came back but it was slashers and crazy killers. We've seen a nostalgic return to Classic Horror by fans, but the glory days are gone. My entertainment still consists of mostly things from the mid '70s and before.

For me it still comes down to the sixties, the decade of my formative years from the age of seven to seventeen.

The bulk of the collectibles that I covet the most originated in the sixties - e.g. model kits, board games, lunch boxes, comics, magazines, bubble gum cards pop bottles - with some spillover into the fifties.

Moreover most of the music I like the best originated in the 1963-69 years with some spillover into the early seventies.

Finally the autos I like the best also tend to be from the 1968-74 years with the direction of the spillover tending strongly to the earlier years, e.g. I also think Ford coupes from the mid-thirties are boss cool.

Boy, to pick just one....  Hmmm.  I was in grade school in the Sixties, so lots of nostalgia there.  Between what was on TV (Irwin Allen shows, Gerry Anderson shows, STAR TREK, etc) and the "Space Race" between the US and the USSR, it seemed as if science fact and science fiction were competing in an effort to keep up with each other.  And then there were all the cool toys that reflected our interest in space.  (Not to mention a lot of toy robots.)  And a lot of things happening on the music front as US and UK musicians filled the airwaves on our radio in the kitchen.

But then there's the Seventies.  I was a teenager.  Got my first movie camera.  Got my first car.  Got my first girlfriend.  My folks weren't big into horror, but I was now old enough to take myself to see the latest from AIP and Hammer.  And then there were things like JAWS, GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, the original (and, to me, the best) STAR WARS.  KING KONG and SUPERMAN were back on the big screen, but no longer in films that a few years earlier might have been treated as kiddie or kitchy fair, but big budget Hollywood productions with some impressive names attached to them.  (Although, granted, the '76 Kong was not to everyone's taste.)

To a lesser extent, perhaps, the 1980s.  I was in college and living on my own.  Got engaged (although we would eventually "disengage"), and was working at a marina where I was making a living via boating.  Also making some bucks as a freelance photographer.  Still cool films (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, EXCALIBUR, CLASH OF THE TITANS, ALIENS, etc.)  And I was starting to get published.

I guess, if push came to shove, the carefree optimism of being a kid in the Sixties, with no worries about the future and no responsibilities.  (And because I'd just discovered Ann-Margret in VIVA LAS VEGAS and realized maybe not all girls were icky.  That Batgirl chick also seemed kinda cool.  Curiously, both of them had motorcycles, so that might have also been a factor.)
