Title: The "They left us too young" thread: IE cancelled toys shown at shows or in mags
Post by: Anton Phibes on August 31, 2016, 01:01:52 AM
The recent discovery I made of an old thread (at Hobby Talk forums) got me thinking.  The thread discussed the Sunday circular ad, and subsequent cancellation, of a Hawthorne lighted village. The subject was Psycho. There have been quite a few things, in this glorious information age, that have made it to prototypes being displayed...and then vanish forever. I know we have all talked about an item here or an item there....but I thought I would make a thread. Specifically to cite the ones that got away that bug me the most. Feel free to add any items I am not aware of.  Here are the ones that pain me the most. My top "unlucky 7". The last two being the most devastating.

7. LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3  Seven Inch Figure: this one bugs me because my younger son was really into this character at the time. He would ask me repeatedly "when". Then, he got older, and stopped asking. Kind of sad.

6. UNIVERSAL MONSTER ARMY MEN VILLAGERS: These were a super cool novelty that reminded me a great deal of Marx monsters. It was a sad day when they became KIA.

5. DAWN OF THE DEAD: ROGER ZOMBIE: My son's favorite zombie film. We met the cast. This would have been an awesome item to have in both my collection and my kids's as well.

4. THE RING ACTION FIGURE AND WELL DIORAMA: As there is no merchandising for this character that I am aware of, I wonder why this one was dumped? I cannot recall if it was supposed to be a NECA project or SOTA. Regardless, I certainly would've snagged one.

3. IT, THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE 1/6 SCALE FIGURE: Amok Time Toys. Martin has heard me yelp about this one more than anyone else. I was more than a tad annoyed it when it was announced as scrapped.

2. "THE" LUNCHBOX: What can any of us add here? This was probably the one that soured every member here on bright eyed optimism regarding prototypes being shown off.... without things already set in order for production to begin. This one is almost tied for my #1 unproduced item. One that everyone here can guess, based on the pining I have done for her, and the lamenting after her confirmed "death".

1. MRS. BATES MEZCO FIGURE: This one did something that no other toy company could accomplish....planning to add a stuffed "doll" style figure to my collection. But alas, she was not meant to be. Thus my post comes somewhat full circle. It was a cancelled  "Psycho"  item that led me to this thought, and so we end the post with a cancelled Psycho item.

It seems like a film this popular would have  more merchandising. :'(

There are other things from other genres (EMCE Vina and Nurse Chapel, Art Asylum Salt Vampire and Sarek, NECA Shredder and Foot soldiers Mirage comics versions, and others.), but these are the top 7 that caused me a few gray hairs, lol. What about you? What announced and prototyped itm were you jazzed for that didn't...."make the cut" as it were?

Jakks Pacific was going to follow up there series 1 (Frank, Drac, WM) with a second series of The Creature, The Invisible Man and a Kharis Mummy. Series 3 would have had a Metaluna Mutant and another Frankenstein monster.

I believe either Figma or SH Figuarts produced a Ringu figure.  I think she even comes out of a tv.  The one in the photo is the scrapped NECA Cult Classics figure, isn't it?

And it would figure that two products that wanted to do a Kharis mummy didn't live to see the light of day.

Ahhh yes....Jakks Pacific monsters. I nearly forgot that wave was shown!! I really liked the Kharis and Creature in those pix. I saw those Monster Matinee unpainted prototype figures for sale on ebay once (no theatre though). Seems like a lot of good items got shelved due to either lack of orders or interest. :'(

Yes....the Monarch Models Fly kit was another awesome display that just never made it out of the gate and into our hands. I saw the box for it at Wonderfest. I have one of the boxes in my collection.

That Dawn of the Dead Roger looks amazing. Why was that not released? Also, as we discussed, the situation with Mrs Bates was just terrible. Also worth mentioning was the cancellation of the An American Werewolf in London figures. However, we are now, in fact, going to get a David, Jack and the Werewolf in action figure form. Also, a large statue of the werewolf. Back to Roger for a moment. If I did not have this custom Roger 1/6 figure, I would be even more disappointed at them cancelling the figure.

Your Roger custom is beautiful. I never really know what the reasons are why some things are cancelled. my only speculation is perceived lack of interest. Sometimes those perceptions are wrong. In the case of things like the lunchbox....who really knows? The EMCE lunchbox and Mezco's  Mrs. Bates will forever be my top 2 "ones that got away" for me I think. The lunchbox primarily because the Wolfman was featured so prominently (and correctly), and Mrs. Bates because, well....she's Mrs. Bates 8). Nuff said.

Perhaps Mezco will do Psycho in their 1:12 stuff. Make a whole big diorama (doll house style) Bates house, lol. It might ease the pain of Mrs. bates's demise....but only a tad, lol.

While not technically cancelled....its definitely been a lengthy delay, and could very well wind up so limited that it may be considered as such by most collectors: Shrunken Head Studios Creepshow figures. Announced and pre-orders started nearly 5 years ago. No one has one yet. Thing is: all the toys and displays in this thread are super cool. Some cooler than product that actually made it to market. Its mind boggling. ???

Then there's the tragedy of NECA's Planet of the Apes line. One of the franchise's finest hours in my opinion. Sculpts were great. The only problem; no humans were made. Here's prototypes that never made it into our hands, that one die hard POTA fan is trying to gauge interest in a possible subscription style program:

That Jaks Creature looked great. Also, I have been following the Creepshow Nate situation for about 5 years. At one point, I had an order in for like 5 months. This was almost 2 years ago. I ended up asking for a refund which he did give me. After 5 years, he has finally posted some of the work, so there might be hope.

Did you pre-order one too?
I've been keeping track on his facebook page turns out a lot of stuff has been happening he has very recently been posting videos of his progress and so over 300 and something has been pre-ordered. The thing is its a literal one man show. The Figure was supposed to be factory produced then they jacked up the price for production after finally getting the license to make the figures ( more are planned) so Brian made Bits and pieces a 1/6 horror accessory pack to help raise money for the raised costs then the factory they raised the price even more. Brian decided to ditch the factory and make every thing himself and the figures made on order. so he roughly has over 300 pre-order figures to make and his including a Nate's tombstone as a bonus to those who pre-ordered it when it was $97. Brian is planning once everything is done to allow people to order Nathaniel again. I think you already know this Anton but just in case for those who don't know about the current status of Nathaniel.

I watched the video on his Facebook channel. He states he had to "let some expenses go" like the website... in order to attempt to make the figure happen. That's never a good sign. I wish him the best. I anticipate the worst :'(. Time will tell. :-\

SOTA made some nice things. I have a few of their items in my collection. Darkman, Jeepers Creepers, and The Mummy remake figures all reside in my small modern monster movies section. They did have more planned, but sadly--SOTA seems to have dropped off the horror toy radar. I am not sure if they closed up shop or not, but they showed some nice items that never made it to collectors.

SOTA Now Playing Series 4:

They also planned The Fog remake figure (why they didn't shoot for the original is a mystery since most hated the remake) and the Anubis creature from Mummy Returns.

The Hellraiser series of figures seemed to make cenobites that no one cared about, lol. Yet this extremely interesting creature from the first film never made his way to fans. Bummer.

Then there's this beauty that never saw the light of day:

and even though Blacula finally did get released (an excellent figure), we are down 2 portraits/ Saved here for posterity.

This thread should ultimately turn into a reference thread so we don't forget all these things. It appears there have been more things cancelled than we remember individually. Perhaps collectively we can add to this and keep them alive in picture form if nothing else.

As for Nate/Creepshow. If he ever gets the site up and running, and takes new orders because they are finished and available: my credit card stands at the ready. I actually don't mind paying the new higher rate, because he has to make a profit to remain relevant. Thus insuring more figures. I cancelled my initial order about 2 years in, and just got a refund. But will pay the accelerated rate so I can assure future characters seeing the light of day.

I'm obsessed with canceled monster merchandise, and the big one for me is Maxx FX. As much as creator Mel Birnkrant didn't care for the resculpting of the licensed characters in the line, we really missed out on some great Universal toys - not to mention his original characters or the Xenomorph from Aliens.

I think it's just the "caddie" without the handle. Instead of putting candy in, you take it out.

How do those [Candy Dispensers] work?

Beats me.

Looks like they both have blinking eyes, but only the dispensers have sound.  I imagine it functions as a simple candy bowl that emits groans whenever someone reaches for a piece.

That picture is the only example I have ever seen and it is maddeningly small.  I think it was from an old eBay auction when image size was very restricted.

I would like to know if "Global" ever actually produced any monster products at all - or if they got fed up with Universal and dropped all such plans.

Does anyone have an original flyer or more information about these "buckets"?

Yes, it's a shame about the line being cancelled before we got Taylor and Nova. Apart from Zira having a slightly over-sized head and her coloring being a bit darker than Cornelius, it's a mostly flawless collection of figures. Add in the Lawgiver statue as a backdrop and NECA gave Apes fans a pretty sweet display.

Speaking of NECA, here is my holy grail of unproduced figures: Greta from Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Also, Amok Time/Executive Replicas was planning a 1/6 scale zombie Karen from Night of the Living Dead that never materialized. I picked up Ben and Barbara at a great price, but could never find a deal on the Hinzman zombie.

All the good Psycho stuff gets cancelled or is unlicensed. I cry. I seriously cry. Between Mrs. Bates and the lunchbox, I am practically crippled in the morale and excitement department. The I find out we cant even get a little goo goo parody cutsie poopsie made...because...of...licensing issues??  What?

Somehow that train wreck Bates Motel tv show is responsible for this.  Which means Psycho will now be tied up in licensing hell like Halloween and the first Evil Dead are.

I guess its up to DD to save my bacon with some Psycho stuff. Get busy, M.

Agreed. Lovely maskies. The precioussssssss. Wouldn't Mezco's Mrs. Bates look lovely sitting next to her though...ooops...I'm doing it again. At the risk of derailing my own thread on things being stripped from our collecting community clutches....I will share a pic of my own. Then back to pining for other lost loves. I can guarantee that almost all of these figures would have gone into production had not our economy tanked back in 2008. That recession crippled toy collectors everywhere (not to mention many of the shops that distributed these toys) and not too soon after, many hard core toy collectors gave up collecting...product prices almost doubled and monetary raises on the job all but stopped. Prior to 2008, toy collecting was rampant and was a sweeping trend across the country. As I recall, looking back, it peaked around the time that the Lord of the Rings trilogy was riding high...Bush was still in office, and I remember you could go into a toy store every week and see a slew of new LOTR figures on the racks (not to mention tons of other cool new toys). McFarlane Toys was still riding high, and the hyper-detailed figures were in every store (NECA, SOTA, Palisades, Sideshow, Mezco). Anyway, it all died when the recession hit. Ahhhh, I remember the days fondly when you could go into a TRU and buy five 7" Movie Maniacs for $50. Those were the days...

I hope the people responsible for killing this off, have their own wine cellar moment, if you know what I mean.

JP

Yeah.  I hope all their wine gets corked, too.

Fellas....from what I understand....there weren't even enough pre-orders to make her happen. So the decision was made based on a presumed lack of interest on our part. Ouchie. :'( :-\

Why can't they just make her in a limited edition of 100. They shouldn't have a problem selling that amount, one would think.

Still can't believe it. Not only because it is such and iconic image/character, but we really don't have any Mrs Bates figures.

I thought the same thing. Pretty sure 50 of them would go to UMA members. ;D

PCS cancelled the American Werewolf and The Thing figures?? I was waiting for them still until now!!!

I am loving this thread!! Soo many canceled toys i never knew or i forget about!! Tough many of the toy companies that produce them don't exists now (like SOTA) but still, is pretty interesting how in the 90s McFarlane and later on NECA flood the world with amazing horror movie figures and now day similar figures get cancelled over and over again.

Is it that the world no longer wants monsters? I don't want to live in a world with no monsters.

I really like those AWIL figures.

They shouldn't have cancelled those.  They should have branched out and made many more.

Well, from what I hear they scrapped them. Seeings as how a release date is never discussed..... and the folks at SSF stating they were canned....I believe them. Tweeterhead EC are definitely scrapped.

That's a shame.  I would have loved a ghost Jack with multiple heads for his various levels of decomposition.

Was the werewolf that size?  I thought he seemed bigger.

The story I got via forum chatter was they were gonna do both 1/6 scale and 7 inch of both properties. Then, supposedly the  1/6 market collapsed (I guess Redman, Hot Toys, Star Ace etc didn't get the memo)... so they nixed doing anything.

Well, it's better to remember that at least (at some point) these things were at least being considered. the Mezco Mrs. Bates kills me the most, followed by the lunchbox and then the Ring figure. That 1/6 Amok time It, terror from beyond space would've been cool too.

It seems that the very best stuff gets cancelled, while that "Horrified" game gets produced. There is no justice.

Or multiple versions of Michael Myers, Jason, TMNT.....etc.

I mentioned this in another thread (just discovered this one), but my latest disappointment is the canceled Freddy Krueger marionette. They only wanted $30 bucks for an 18-inch replica so I'm baffled that there weren't enough pre-orders.

And Anton, like you, I also had TWO Mrs. Bates dolls on order. One was to be a friend's Christmas present so that one really hurt!

The reason the SOTA/Now Playing and other stuff of that time period were cancelled due to the death/restructuring of boutiques likes Suncoast Video, which predates the 2008 recession. Palisades almost went under at that time but Toys R Us picked up thetail end of their Muppets line. TRU wasnt willing to take on 80s horror monsters, and the Jakks Universal monsters did not sell well, and the Van Helsing movie stuff bombed. Things were different back then when you completely relied on brick and mortar stores to make things happen. PCS The Thing and AWIL suffered the time of the wage hike in Taiwan and increase of plastic, labor and shipping for such a small company who didnt have an "in" with someplace like Target.

The American Werewolf dream sequence figures would have been great.  (And a nice-looking Alex Price, too.)
